Less than a week after Iceland’s prime minister contended that his nation’s fundamental values would be at risk should the insurgent Pirate Party ever come to power, the group celebrated its first legislative success on Thursday, the decriminalization of blasphemy.

Birgitta Jonsdottir, one of three Pirates in the Althing, Iceland’s Parliament, was among party activists celebrating the vote in favor of their bill to repeal the prohibition on impious irreverence, which had been in force since 1940.

I would not have guessed such a law was in place in a country like Iceland to begin with.

Good for them.

The interesting thing here, is the 'Pirate Party' have their genesis in the anti-intellectual property 'internet pirates' - they were founded by the original 'Pirate Bay' founders!

And now they're spreading across Europe.

Anyplace where criminalizing criticism of religion is a fundamental value needs to take a long look at itself. It's good to see Iceland choosing modern ideas over outdated ones.

It is indeed rare to see a country move away from hate speech legislation.

Except in America, where it has happened time and time again

What exactly is that supposed to mean, pretty much all European countries dont have the freedom of speech the US has

https://www.indexoncensorship.org/2...onstrained-by-cultural-and-political-factors/

Laws against obscenity, indecency and profanity set out and enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) restrict what content can appear on free-to-air broadcasting.

Nudity, pornography, obscenity and religious sensitivity are among the most common reasons visual art is censored from public space in the US.

Controversial books are still removed from or kept out of local public libraries across the country

Yea soo free.. thats why BEEP and BEEP all the media are BEEP and BEEP and BEEP.

Your own country has laws against blasphemy and hate speech, you think that a BEEP over the word **** is worse than those?

Yes, and should I tell you why? Blashphemy laws are very rarely enforced.. in fact cant remember the last time they were. As for hate speech, Danish hate speech laws require one hell of a proof burden before they kick in, so also rarely enforced. So yes, BEEP BEEP BEEP is far worse because that happens daily!

Lets put this to a practical test. If i were to go on TV and say, "I ****ing hate Muslims", the worst that would happen is that it would get bleeped. If you did the same you would be in jail.

Danish hate speech laws require no proof whatsoever. Even if you make a factual statement like "honor killings and sexual abuse take place in Muslim families" it doesnt matter if it is true or not if you offend a group of people your are guilty under Danish law.

I get that you want to be proud of your country but you don't know how oppressed you are because you have never been free and even worse you have lost the desire to be free.

I would never do that. Danes are civilized and for the most part dont act like animals in public.

Ahh that case. Yes Jesper Langballe, may he rest in peace .. well hell. He was a racist preacher xenophobe turned politician that got convicted and sentenced to... a fine. And what he said was hate speech, just as when Hizb Ut-Tahrir as an organisation were busted for hate speech. In most cases people are fined, not thrown in prison and there is no doubt that they promoted hatred.

I get that you want to be proud of your country but you don't know how oppressed you are because you have never been free and even worse you have lost the desire to be free.

We are in no way opposed. We are free to say whatever we want and do what ever we want and because of that we have to responsible for our actions. If we lie, then we can be sued, if we promote hate speech then we can be convicted for... it is called responsibility.. I know that is totally alien for Americans. In the US you can lie, promote terror and so many horrible things, but they censor you for swearing or showing a boob. That is seriously one warped train of thought that thinks swearing and showing a breast is more dangerous than spreading lies and hate/terror...
