Virginia will phase out vehicle license plates featuring the Confederate battle flag, the state's governor said on Tuesday, following the fatal shooting of nine black worshipers at a historic South Carolina church, allegedly by a white gunman.

I predict that the same thing will happen in other states in the near future and that all states will stop mandating display of the Confederate flag.

No one is going to stop anyone from personally displaying it, but the states will stop doing it.

Wait and see.

Probably a good idea. People should be able to display the flag all day long, but not real sure we have much precedence for a license plate being a pure example of freedom of expression.

Yeah, you have a right to display the flag and be an asshole, but you don't have the right to make the government display your asshole flag. People who want to celebrate treason, slavery, and oppression can buy a bumper sticker.

Time to bring back the two-toned, felon produced license plates to protect from the perpetually offended.

This is a good idea but I fear if the confederate flag gets hard to acquire then those people will have to reset to flying swastikas instead.

I love how you say "allegedly by a white gunman" yet you have absolute certainty that the Confederate Flag is the real culprit.

I believe the SC just ruled that a license plate constitutes government speech.

Another conservative deluding themselves into thinking those darn liberals think flags are the culprit.

Really? How did you manage to decide this was the argument? Please explain, I'm really interested in hearing how so many of you concluded this.

As someone actually living and paying taxes in said state, I have absolutely no issue with the governor's actions here.

First some bright liberal said it was access to guns, then some bright liberal said the racist became racist because the Confederate Flag is a symbol of racism. We can only assume that if guns were more strictly controlled and flags were banned, the world would be lollypops and sugar candy and everyone would be dancing in the streets of Euphoriaville, USA. Liberals are as transparent as they are idiotic.

That's fair - however, the flag should be removed or retired if that's what the people of the State actually want and not because of some kneejerk reaction by one person in the Governor's office.

Link the posts in question. I'd like to see whether this was actually said or whether or not you just interpreted it that way.

I guess you don't listen to your President when he speaks. Don't you have a TV? The President clearly blamed the gun and called for another look at gun control - bodies were barely cold when he started. Not long after, the target became the flag with any number of politicians and talking heads calling for it to be removed. If you want something closer to home, just review the threads here on the tragedy and on the flag.

I haven't heard much talk about the likely reason for the rampage. Roof's cousin has reportedly indicated that about a year ago he had a crush on a girl and she didn't return his affection and started dating a black boy. At that time, Roof changed and started getting into the white supremacist movement. There's your likely motive - not a flag. Symbols don't kill people - people kill people.

Give me the quote. Source something. You clearly have jumped to a conclusion that wasn't actually stated. Your unwillingness to show a source proves this. No, I don't watch the president on TV. Long-winded speeches from politicians are boring. Give me a transcript later.

If you want me to do your ****ing research for you, show me the money - otherwise, buh bye.

Dude, it's your point. You are claiming people say flags cause violence, or whatever. You made a specific claim about what Obama said. I can't prove a negative. I can't prove nobody said what you claim, short of pasting every single message board post and speech from every politician on the subject. All you need to do is show me ONE SINGLE PERSON who has actually said "flags make people commit murder," or whatever claim you're making. Just one. And you can't do that. Because you know I'm right. You know what's actually been said is that the symbolic nature of the flag contributes to an atmosphere of racial tension. Not "flags cause murder."

Buh bye yourself. You run away when asked to prove your own point. So transparent, so predictable.

Awwwwwww, Iz devastated that uz don't love me. How will I go on.

If it's within the power of the executive, and the people elected him into the executive, then for the time being it is what the "people" want...or more accurately, what the person they entrusted with power wants and is being executed in that vein. If the people have an issue with it then they can take it into account the next time they vote for an executive. I don't think our law makers need to hold some kind of state wide vote whenever they seek to do something, even something controversial. We are a representative republic not a direct democracy.

Well I was hoping you'd try to provide one shred of evidence for any point you've made here but I guess that wont happen. Toodles!

That's fair too. The move, in my view, implies guilt by association and implies the flag is a cause of or at least a contributor to murderous violence. If that's how the majority of people feel, more power to them. I can see it becoming a much more controversial move once the heat of this tragedy dies down.
