Are you not aware that women are raped here all the time as well? What do you expect of rapists?

"Hi, what are you doing here?"
"I'm here teaching abroad!"
"Oh ok, I was gonna rape you, but nevermind, have a good one."

Safer to teach in N. Korea than S. Africa

That story earns a grinning emoticon from you?

Of course not. I am sarcastic. That is the way how the locals welcomes the visitors. That's why I am not going there. A foreign women gets raped and a man gets burnt alive - with a tire around his neck and hands bound with barbed wire (just in case he tries to escape or remove the burning tire from his neck). Sick if you ask me.

Travel the world they said.

Women who travel anywhere run the risk of getting raped. Nothing special about South Africa there.

????

South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world.

Gang rape is practically the national sport.

This news is tragic and not something you'd wish upon anyone, but if you're a single woman jogging through a park in South Africa all alone you're about as close as anyone can come to "asking for it".

Book smart, street stupid.

South Africa is nowhere you want to be anymore. The crime rate has skyrocketed.

It's pretty much like the rest of Africa now.

Violent crime is violent crime, and it exists everywhere. And people from out of the area are always at greatest risk because they don't (quite) blend in with the locals.

What you and the OP seem to be implying is that African countries will have much higher crime because of some racial element. That correlation doesn't always exist.

Maybe that's what the OP is implying.

Maybe it's not.

It doesn't change the fact that South Africa has the highest rate of violence against women in the world and one of the highest rates (it's usually #1, #2 or #3 depending on the year) of sexual violence against women in the world.

If you rely on reported statistics a woman gets raped in South Africa every 4 minutes.

If you instead look at the figure that the government and NGOs think is actually an accurate representation of their rape crisis it jumps up to a woman being raped just about every 36 seconds (note that the vast majority of rapes, 8 out of 9, go officially unreported for a number of reasons).

Studies conducted by South Africa's Medical Research Council have shown that something like 25% of South African men have committed rape and 50% of those have raped more than once.

It's estimated that 40% of South African women will be raped in their lifetime.

All of these statistics and estimates are readily available on the Internet from any number of reliable sources.

Feel free to look around and edify yourself.

What I'm implying is that when you're a woman, and you travel to a place where rape is endemic and of crisis proportions, you should probably be a LOT more careful than to go out by yourself for a jog in a place where it's possible for someone to pull you in to the bushes, out of sight.

If you want to imagine that race is a factor here I'll respect your right to speculate all you want.

But you'll notice that I have not, not once, neither here nor in my previous comment, mentioned race once.

Fair enough.

hmm because they are black ?

Where would you prefer her getting raped?

South Africa is one of the most violent and dangerous countries in the world... fact. Nothing to do with race and everything to do with racism. White Apartheid's fault.

That is not asking for it. It is not the fault of rape victims that rape happens, but rather the fault of rapists.

Hm. Well then in that case the story is an awful exception that proves the rule, since surely, if Rape is White Apartheid's fault, it's incidence has been steadily plummeting in South Africa for the last couple of decades as we get further from that horrid regime and its effects become muted.

Not really... all that means is that society there is getting better and more lawful...

Greetings, Soot. :2wave:

I agree with your thoughts that it's not safe for women these days to be out alone jogging, especially in South Africa. What was that woman thinking? Plus, isn't South Africa where Boko Haram kidnapped 300 young schoolgirls who have not been found? Even Michelle Obama begged for their release, to no avail. If those girls are not dead, they may wish they were, if they've become sex slaves to a bunch of animals! Disgusting!

Oh. So no, in fact, the rape rate hasn't plummeted, indicating that the idea that a rape culture is Apartheid's fault isn't, well, accurate?

Nigeria. Boko Haram is in Nigeria. It's about 3,000 miles away.

I have no idea what point you are trying to make or why you are debating me. I said that South Africa is one of the most violent countries on Earth and that Apartheid is the reason that there are untold millions living in extreme poor and in violent conditions. Just a fact.

Thanks for the update. I should have remembered that!
