FDA Tells Food Industry to Phase out Artificial Trans Fats

And why do you read cancer? Do you have some evidence that any of those things cause cancer? The sun causes cancer for crying out loud. Should the sun be required to list it's cancer causing ingredients on a "gov registered website"?

Look, I'm obviously being a smart ass. There's no doubt that many food additives are not good for you, but that's no reason to exaggerate and be hyperbolic about it. If you're worried about the mac 'n cheese packet, don't eat it. Have you tried Annie's mac 'n cheese products? They're very good, and the ingredient list is a little more understandable. ;)

But the thing is people trust this easy-Mac anyways because it is so commonly sold and it passed FDA. Me and you know that they are dumping everything t hey legally can into the food to make it as cheap as possible but the common person thinks this food is normal and that everything in the food is probably justified. They shouldnt be allowed to use humans as living waste disposal plants.

:doh This is your example of the US moving towards a 'single payer grocery' (as you call it) system? Free and supplemental lunches for poor kids during summer time?
Keep dancing. :monkey

Most of the people on here probably don't remember the old government commodities food program that ended in the early 90s. Better than half the South grew up on commodity cheese.

Lol, my wife has fond memories of government cheese. She loved it as a kid, I guess it was akin to velveeta. Lol....

You can't fix apathy, and I no longer trust the government to do anything right. Which is why I rail against government intervention into every facet of our lives. Where does it end? It doesn't. I say bring back personal responsibility.

Control? No no, this about making sure people make the right choice, period. Why stop at banning a few things, why not go the distance, come on, you know you like the idea...

How is it about making people make the right choice, if trans fats aren't one of the choices?

Probably the right move, but then again I have a dislike for "do something, anything" measures that are used to mask an unwillingness to confront a problem, Americans eat too much food, and most of it is junk. If we began a cultural shift towards eating more lean cuts of meat and vegetables and less processed foods it would make banning trans fats moot.

The trans fats are simply a symptom of larger problems , namely Americans would rather eat lots of cheap junk then a little nutrition, I switched my diet over recently to eating mainly steak and salads, and my grocery tab went up by a lot for less food, however I feel much better already

I would ditch the salads.....and go with table veggies. Salad Dressings are nasty.

There are some great salad dressings. What are you talking about?

I remember government cheese.

are any of them sweet? if not, they are nasty.....:2razz:

Sure, lots of them are. I actually don't care for the sweet ones though. But my wife does.

Lol, my wife has fond memories of government cheese. She loved it as a kid, I guess it was akin to velveeta. Lol....

it was horrible....absolutely horrible.

those whom packaged it as "cheese" should be arrested and charged with fraud... and subsequently sentenced to eating "cheese" sandwiches for 3 meals a day until they die.... or 60 days, which ever comes first.

there were a few commodity foods that were ok... but the cheese was not one of them.

I take it you don't like velveeta. :D

No it was real cheese, at least what we got was. It was like a farmers cheese. Made great grilled cheese sandwiches.

i like it better than gubmint cheese... but no, i don't particularly like it ..... and I balk at the notion of calling it "cheese"

Lol, it's not really cheese, it's processed cheeselikesubstance.

Are you a cheese snob? :D Have you tried Cabot cheese products? They are my favorite. Their extra sharp white cheddar is the best cheese I have ever tasted. Even better than any of the cheeses made here in Amish country. https://www.cabotcheese.coop/

government cheese has always been processed cheese....not "real" cheese.

it's more "real" than velveeta, but still a processed cheese.

nah, i'm not really a cheese snob per say, i just like real cheese.
I like tillamook sharp cheddar.. I like many of the Boars head cheeses...
i'm a big fan of grilled cheese sandwiches made by mixing sharp cheddar slices with a couple of slices of aged Havarti.... usually with a sliced fresh Jalapeno pepper in between the cheese slices.

to me, it's like the difference between spam and a nice ribeye

How is it about making people make the right choice, if trans fats aren't one of the choices?

???? Ummm, because trans fats would be a bad choice. I get that liberals have trouble grasping the concept of a free society, but if remove every option I deem to be 'bad' from your array choices, I am the one making your choices for you.

Yeah I guess your right. They phased the stuff out when I was about 13 or so. I remember the cheese because of eating grilled cheese made from it and the peanut butter that came in a huge unlabeled can.

Balsamic vinegarete is just fine, both taste and nutrition wise

a "frugal" neighbor with lots of savings, but a low retirement income, qualified for commodities, and gave us some peanut butter. One taste and it was trashed. Can't imagine how bad the "cheese" was....

Yes, they have been severely reduced, and without government intervention. Imagine that.

False statement is false:

The agency announced its plans to act in 2013 and has since addressed more than 6,000 public comments. The decision Tuesday was final and would effectively remove industrial trans fats from the American diet by 2018, a change that the agency has estimated could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year.

The food industry said it was pleased that the agency had given it three years to carry out the rule, but also said it planned to seek permission to keep using small amounts of trans fats in certain products, an indication of just how difficult it is to root them out.

linkypoo...

With liberty comes responsibility. We don't need the government, or you, telling us what we can or cannot eat or feed our children.

Government also regulates how much arsenic is allowed in water. Should they just back off that for liberty's sake?
