Rachel Dolezal resigns as NAACP leader amid racial identity controversy

It's actually kind of fascinating. I was watching an interview on CNN today and the black guests were saying how you can't just choose to be black because you can't possibly have the same experiences and understanding of the prejudices of the past. Yet these same people figure that a man can be a woman just by taking some chems and going under the knife.

This whole notion of "it's right because I feel like it's right" is pure insanity.

Practicing relativism has a way of making the unreal to be real.

What exactly makes someone black?

And keep in mind, we have MANY white Africans.

Their daughter wrote them out of her life because she didn't want anyone to see her white parents.

I'm guessing this is a desperation move to get their daughter back.

I don't think so. Rachel went her own way and painted them out of her life long ago. Her parents were contacted by a news outlet investigating hate crimes Dolezal had reported that didn't add up and were asked whether Rachel was their daughter.

From KXLY in Idaho:

That story was broken by veteran reporter Jeff Selle at the Coeur d'Alene Press, where his editors were worried that a rash of hate crimes Dolezal was reporting in Coeur d'Alene might not be legitimate. When Dolezal told police the same type of racial harassment was happening after she moved to Spokane, KXLY and the Coeur d'Alene Press decided to take a closer look.

“I got all of the police reports she had filed in Coeur d'Alene, found out none of them were actually resolved and a lot of them were pretty curious,” Selle said.

Selle was also curious about rumblings he had heard that Dolezal wasn't even African American, especially after she posted pictures of an African American man Dolezal claimed was her father.

“We started finding all sorts of things that didn't add up. We laid it all out on a table and took a look at it and said we got a story here,” Selle said.

...Selle's work on this story helped set the record straight about someone who had made it seem North Idaho's hate crimes were making a comeback when they really are not.

No clue. Someone said in another thread that it could be considered fraud if you checked the wrong ethnicity/race on applications(federal aid, loans, college, etc), but I never heard exactly how they defined any particular ethnicity/race.

Why were her parents involved at all?

Because they're her parents. The investigation was into the truths of her claims, including supposed hate crimes against her as a black woman in her younger days. Come on Ali, you know it's perfectly reasonable to check with the parents to verify something.

If Bruce Jenner lied about being a man and Michael Jackson lied about being normal why can't this white beauty say she is whatever she wants to be? Black women straighten their hair to resemble white women's hair. This ivory hottie never dyed her skin.

I saw no mention of that in the story. Who exactly is doing the investigating, Tres?

The police in Washington were investigating racist hate mail she allegedly received. Their conclusion was that she or someone else with a key to the box placed it there. in the course of that investigation, they talked to her parents, which is what started the outing.

BTW, anyone notice in the Today interview, that when shown a picture of her at 15/16.. She indicated she wasn't yet identifying as black.. But then later claimed she was identifying as black when drawing self portraits at 5 years old? God, this crazy girl just can't stop herself from lying.

Rachel Dolezal to Matt Lauer: ‘I Identify as Black’

...But if you want to truly explore how the Left applauds one kind of troubled falsehood and attacks another, contrast Lauer’s interview of Dolezal with Katie Couric’s fawning interview of Laverne Cox....

...Both Cox and Dolezal are deeply troubled individuals who, for complex reasons, felt alienated from the identity of their birth. In both cases, it’s a sad tale, and Cox and Dolezal need help. Yet to the Left, one person is a hero while the other is a hate object....

The City of Spokane. Have you been reading the press on this story?

Not really, I get a lot of news here and follow the links. Just a strange set of circumstances to have the police asking her parents what race she is, but if they did ask, I suppose they were prudent to answer.

Once the transracial person has undergone skin therapy to increase the amount of melanin, and gone through hair therapy to get that afro look, had a nose flattening procedure, then does he/she have to go to language school to learn to talk like they do in the "hood"? I mean, if you talk like Obama, are you really black? Seems you might have to learn to speak like Fifty Cent or Snoop Dog.

"challenging the construct of race is at the core of evolving human consciousness"

Its established that your gender is a choice, so why not your race! Can't wait for someone to argue they are a platypus. I'm ok with that so long as they were a fedora.

Silly analogy for multiple reasons.

Thanks for posting this vid clip. I thought Matt Lauer conducted a great interview. My, but Rachel Dolezal is a slippery, evasive one.

Interesting how Dolezal talks about being described as “trans-racial.” Perhaps this is the angle
she will run with.

I wonder what she means when she accuses her parents of “whitewashing” some of the work she’s done. Poor Rachel. Also interesting is how she claims that she lost her full-ride scholarship and TAship because “other people needed opportunities, and you probably have white relatives and that, you know, that can afford to help you with your tuition, and I thought that this was an injustice.” I don’t know what FERPA restraints Howard University is under or whether it will be able to comment, but I hope it can. How convenient for Dolezal if it can't, however.

When Lauer asks Dolezal whether, given all the fallout, she’d make the same choices and softballs her the question of what positive discussion she hopes to prompt, she says she’d make the same choices and adds “"well, as much as this discussion has somewhat been at my expense recently and in a very sort of viciously inhumane way." Is she always the victim?

She also says her life has been one of survival (I guess this harkens back to her fiction about being forced by her parents to live in a teepee) and that the decisions she has made along the way including how she identifies has been to survive. Oh, the drama with her narcissistic self in the center.

Her reply when Lauer asks whether she could have been as effective an NAACP leader as a Caucasian woman, she actually says she hasn’t had “the opportunity to experience that in those shoes.” Really, the chutzpah of saying she hasn’t had this “opportunity” is astounding.

One of her sons—not sure whether she means her biological son or the adopted brother she adopted—has told her that that racially, she’s human, but culturally, she’s black. Mentally, Dolezal is out of touch with reality.

She’s also a brazen opportunist and liar. I want to learn more, much more, about her claims of hate-crime victimhood and why all of the investigations were closed.

But I don’t expect her to give a straight answer. She’s very evasive. I think that she’s going to have glib, jargon-laden non-answers for every question and that she will continue to babble about the “complexity” of her race, more “complex, you know, than being true or false.” Sort of like how she acknowledges that her 16-year old self in the photo is "visibly" a Caucasian.

Fair enough. In the world of jazz being black was plausibly an advantage. I remember heated debates among afficionados whether this or that white jazz musician could swing.

Being black was not an advantage except for possibly allowing easier access to the best players. (but only if you're very good) Black players faced major hassles and harsher conditions when traveling esp., from the police and hotels and restaurants in the Jim Crow states and were more likely to be underpaid or cheated by club bookers, music publishers and record companies and less likely to get exposure in the mainstream media. This is still the case black artists who don't play overtly commercial music.

There sure is a lot of hate for someone who (AFAIK) never actually harmed anyone, probably because people hate cognitive dissonance.

True. The problem is - black people won't accept her. So Leftists are left with either declaring one of the Key Identity Groups in their coalition to be a bunch of bigots.... or engaging in ridiculous twists.

My bet - they'll choose the latter and try to accuse anyone who points that up of trying to attack someone, bluster, and rapidly try to change the subject. Perhaps they'll accuse them of racism.

Well, yeah. Self-absorbed people usually are.

She also says her life has been one of survival (I guess this harkens back to her fiction about being forced by her parents to live in a teepee)

Maybe she identified with being in a teepee?

Well, but that's the point, right? Now you can choose to ignore physical reality, if you feel that you are something else. She has learned well the lexicon that the left uses to make that argument, and it's going to be fun watching them try to defend against their own reasoning.

That depends on whether or not you identify with the clean, articulate black populace that doesn't have a negro dialect or not.

She thought NAACP stood for National Association for the Advancement of Caucasian Posers.

How long did it take for you to come up with that one?

Was there a requirement that the parents talk to the media?

From what I understand when Rachel filed the false police report that she received death threats because she was black, the Seattle police and the Seattle press got in touch with her parents and they answered the questions.

This was 100% caused by her craziness and nothing else.

From The Smoking Gun, here are some of the illuminating facts of Dolezal's suit against Howard University, and those interested will see why the courts found against her:

When Dolezal applied for Spokane’s police oversight commission, which she currently chairs, Dolezal marked her ethnic origin as being white, black and American Indian. She also marked “Two or More Races.” You can see the scanned app here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/maryanngeor...ponses-so-far-concerning-her-race#.rx869PRdvP

The areas of deepest jazz popularity were often not in Jim Crow territory, but I'm not going to argue jazz musicians were exempt from racism. My point was only that among musicians (and critics) there was often an assumption that black musicians could "swing" in a way that white musicians just could not.

From the Seattle CBS affiliate:

Dolezal’s statement reads, “While challenging the construct of race is at the core of evolving human consciousness, we can NOT afford to lose sight of the five Game Changers (Criminal Justice & Public Safety, Health & Healthcare, Education, Economic Sustainability, and Voting Rights & Political Representation) that affect millions, often with a life or death outcome. The movement is larger than a moment in time or a single person’s story, and I hope that everyone offers their robust support of the Journey for Justice campaign that the NAACP launches today!

“It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the NAACP that I step aside from the Presidency and pass the baton to my Vice President, Naima Quarles-Burnley. It is my hope that by securing a beautiful office for the organization in the heart of downtown, bringing the local branch into financial compliance, catalyzing committees to do strategic work in the five Game Changer issues, launching community forums, putting the membership on a fast climb, and helping many individuals find the legal, financial and practical support needed to fight race-based discrimination, I have positioned the Spokane NAACP to buttress this transition.” Rachel Dolezal Resigns As NAACP Leader Amid Controversy « CBS Seattle

Brazenly self-aggrandizing even now.

If it is perfectly acceptably for man to put on a dress, maybe cut off his penis and have a fake vagina put it, take hormones, get breast implants and call himself a women. Then it is perfectly acceptable for a woman to darken her skin, curl her hair or add hair extensions, check African American on a application and call herself black.

The parents said they were contacted by the Coeur d'Alene Press. Here's info on that:

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Rachel Dolezal, the white Spokane civil rights leader who was caught masquerading as a black woman, has now resigned as president of the NAACP. Her tale of using disguises to lead a double life has made international news but actually got it's start as a story in the Coeur d'Alene Press.

That story was broken by veteran reporter Jeff Selle at the Coeur d'Alene Press, where his editors were worried that a rash of hate crimes Dolezal was reporting in Coeur d'Alene might not be legitimate.
