Bernie Sanders wants to take back “family values” from the GOP

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

Yup. And I agree to give it every other impact that an anecdote gets against the actual stats.

But hey - if you have numbers that suggest that in anything close to 50% of cases the woman will hop right back into the workforce while the man stays home, I'd love to see them.

Businesses get the tax breaks only to the extent that they give the family leave to the employees, within an annual cap. What encourages discrimination in this sphere is making it mandatory.

She shouldn't have to, anymore than someone who has knee surgery or hernia surgery or other major medical procedures.

That isn't what I asked about discrimination. Would they be allowed to discriminate against let's say gay people and still get that tax credit? If they discriminated against white people or men they wouldn't get that tax credit, right?

Of course they would!

 it depends on her job, what she wants to do with her own life, and her employer. I agree that it is good for babies for mom to be able to stay home, as you were able to do. But you were able to do that partly because your employer doesn't face market pressure. Mandating that all employers pretend that market pressure isn't real isn't going to suddenly make market pressure go away. It's going to force employers to find work-arounds, and one of the ways they will work around it is by discriminating against women in hiring.

Again. What we think "should" be is irrelevant. We have to work with what is.

Discriminated against in what sense?

The tax credit is available for family leave for any company that gives their employees family leave:

•Adaptable to all employee arrangements, including part-time work.
•Available for new parents; caretakers of sick parents, spouses, and children; employees with serious illnesses; and military families.
•Based on the Strong Families Act, introduced by Senators Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Angus King (I-ME).

Wait - Are you saying that we should design public policy so as to refuse to help working mothers if a private company doesn't also help gay adoptions?

Still waiting for you to address the fact that paid parental leave benefits the majority.
The same old arguments are used over and over again whenever something is proposed to benefit the laborers in this country. If they were all seen as valid, we would have no child labor laws, no minimum wage, no anti discrimination.. Oh, i forgot, these things are all part of the family values agenda. :lamo
