Unless what I just watched was somehow wrong, there apparently is now a winner of the triple crown for the first time in..decades?

So far no news articles up according to a google search.

Edit: And I misspelled Pharoah..../facepalm

American Pharoah wins Belmont, takes Triple Crown

There was no heartbreak this time.

After 37 years, American Pharoah made a feat 13 others failed to accomplish since 1978 look easy, cruising to a Belmont Stakes win and Triple Crown sweep on Saturday in front of a boisterous crowd in New York....

i stood up and clapped in my living room. he ran a great race. congrats, American Pharaoh!

oh, i can also fix the title if you want.

Congrats to a wonderful animal, by far the best today, and a true champion. As a horse racing fan for decades of my life, it's nice to see such a super horse run a super race leaving no doubt he deserves the honours. The way he pulled away in the stretch reminded me of Secretariat's dominance.

Hope he gets a nice long rest on the farm and comes back for the fall racing season.

Horse racing is stupid and mafia laden.

Greetings, CJ. :2wave:

CJ, you should have heard me hollering from the time the race started till it was won - I'm surprised the neighbors didn't report me for disturbing the peace! :lamo: Yippee! I'm going to have to get a Cleopatra haircut on Monday- straight bangs and all - in remembrance of American Pharoah winning the Triple Crown so decisively! What a beautiful animal! P.S. I didn't have any money bet on this one!

The last time I witnessed a horse win the triple crown, I was 11 years old. The following year, Spectacular Bid narrowly failed to become the 4th horse in 7 years to win the TC in the 70s. Back then I thought it was too easy... LOL. Cue 37 years later, and we have our 12th winner. Amazing. I was doubtful AP had the class to win, but he proved me wrong.

The weird thing is, I'm not really that much of a horse racing fan, but it just so happens that a co-worker was watching it, and I realized a triple crown was possible...

American Pharoah was basically in the lead the entire time and only got further ahead. The other horses weren't even close at the end.

This is the first time I've ever seen a Triple Crown.

Co-worker mentioned it's basically a once-in-a lifetime experience at this point

it was a great race and he stood out of the pack the whole way. I thought the other horses let up a bit at the end but maybe it was because there was no point in pushing them.
let see how long it will be till the next one.

it is the last triple crown winner was in 1978.

A jockey will get fined for letting up/not trying. They were simply not good enough.

Great horse and race. I don't think any athlete--horse or human--has ever had a performance like Secretariat's Belmont Stakes win. It's worth watching for those who don't know just how extraordinary it was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V18ui3Rtjz4

I didn't mean to compare American Pharoah to Secretariat - no horse, with the exception of Northern Dancer, comes close - I say Northern Dancer because he would have been a triple crown winner had he not come back home to Canada to run in our triple crown races after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness - "The Dancer" is also the sire of champions and every great racehorse in the last half-century has Dancer blood. I was only trying to compare the way AP opened up in the stretch leaving no doubt. Most of the Belmonts in recent memory have had very close endings.

He is a super athlete to be sure but he won't be racing any more. He will now begin a new career of providing millions to his owner through stud fees.

Greetings, donsutherland1. :2wave:

I had never seen that Belmont win by Secretariat before now! Extraordinary! To win by so many lengths when every horse out there was doing their best was unbelievable! It looked like a one-horse race at the finish...

One of the greatest moments in sports, that's for sure. Also, one of the greatest lines in sports, too:

"He's moving like a tremendous machine!" - Chic Anderson

BTW, it was also nice seeing Penny Chenery there yesterday. She still going strong at 92 years of age!

Actually, AP bested Secretariat's final quarter of 25 by running in 24.32 seconds.

I fully agree. It was nice to see that Ms. Chenery is still doing well. She was a classy owner throughout Secretariat's racing career and life.

Yes, classy indeed. About 20 years ago, a friend of mine was circling a block trying to find a parking space downtown Saratoga. All of a sudden, this woman walk towards his car and says that she is leaving her parking space and she will wait for him to get close so he could have her spot. Not this is a very kind gesture from anyone--that's for sure--but when it's Penny Chenery, it's extra special.

I'm not so sure - I expect he'll run in the Breeder's Cup Classic in the fall, just to prove he can beat older horses too. He might retire after that - there's no doubt he'll be making millions for his owners for years to come from breeding fees.

True, but his overall time was seconds behind - Secretariat went the first six furlongs in 1:09 and change which is unheard of in such a long race. He probably eased up although it looked like he was going faster.
