In Baltimore schools, free meals for all

I'm pretty sure that by offering school lunches for free, the government is not going out and rounding up parents to remove them from the home. That may be just a bit if hysterics there.

I'm going to suggest that "hysterics" lives where someone invents that I claimed parents would be rounded up and removed from home.

First of all, we need to be taking care of our kids if their parents can't do it. Secondly, if a parent can't provide food for their kids, that's when CPS needs to step in address the situation. Providing these kids with the food they need is only half the problem, we need to be addressing the issue of why the parents can't feed their kids. My grand-daughter's mother has a very sever case of Lupus and is at a point where she is no longer capable of working until a new treatment she's starting kicks in. So she's been looking at what benefits are available and between SNAP, TANF, WIC and the Oregon Trail Card, she'll be making almost as much as she was as an assistant mgr. at a national chain Rx store. With that kind of funding available, there's no reason any kid should ever go hungry. If a parent can't provide the basics that a child needs, then there needs to be action taken to fix the ROOT CAUSE of the problem and not just band-aid the symptoms. We do need to be able provide that band-aid until the real problem can be addressed, but we cannot make the band-aid teh fix.

I generally don't have an issue with this as it's being offered across the board.

It helps low income families who have trouble adequettely feeding their kids.

It helps kids unfortunately paired with negligent parents who aren't adequettely feeding their kids.

It helps middle income families who would rather save the money they'd spend feeding their kids breakfast/lunch and have them do school lunch instead.

And it doesn't negatively impact high income families if they want to continue to send their kids to school with lunches or feed them good breakfast.

Ultimately, it should help with the actual educational process as well, by providing children with adequette food so that they're not potentially distracted due to hunger or other such things.

Barring the news that the cost for this program is extremely higher than I expect it to be, I find this to be a relatively small thing. If they're opening the schools significantly earlier to accomodate this, then yeah...maybe a problem. But ultimately, I have no issue with the schools providing food for the children during the school day if we're requiring the students to be there.

Though my preference would still be to not have this "free" but to have it heavily subsidized. Something to where a dollar a day with the student should be able to buy themselves a standard breakfast and lunch at the school. Personally, I felt that having to buy milk or the school lunches actually helped be a facet of my education growing up. You began to learn how to count money, and beyond that you began to learn impulse control, matters regarding cost/reward (do I want to get an extra biscuit at breakfast but want to give up the little desert at lunch, etc?), etc. I'd much prefer going that route than making it absolutely free.

But I just don't see this as something to get up in arms over.

I'm not surprised a liberal/progressive would see value in eliminating the role of parenting in the development of children.

Under the false banner of "compassion" it make sense such an ideological view would see the state as much more qualified to administer all facets of upbringing and values. The state knows better. And don't you forget it.

Dangerous ground Progressives have committed to. Better hope the State is always to your liking, because you never know who might be holding the reins of State in the future.

I was going to go line by line discussing this but I decided against it. There's really no way that I can understand your thinking because it's full of paranoia and dripping with cynicism.

So you support the state eliminating parents? I'm not sure how to classify that. I'm pretty sure they've made movies about though.

That is an exact quote from me, right? I support the state elimination parents? If you are going to tell a lie, at least tell on someone might believe.

I'm going to suggest that "hysterics" lives where someone invents that I claimed parents would be rounded up and removed from home.

You claimed they are going to be "eliminated", yes?

"So you support the state eliminating parents?" This is what you said. Don't say it if you don't mean it.

"For the first time in the history of the school lunch program, all children in Baltimore are created equal.

Beginning this week, every student in the city, regardless of income level, is being offered free breakfast and lunch under a federal program that allows school districts to eliminate a decades-old meal-subsidy structure for students in high-poverty schools."

This is the proper way to provide a social benefit.

Means tested benefits are inherently unfair, unproductive, rife with fraud and highly divisive - provide it for all, or for none.

The same with healthcare, et al ....

Why are we giving these brats free breakfast.? Why can't their parents feed them a breakfast.? Parents should also pack a lunch for the kids.
Why can't the parents feed their own kids.? Oh yeah - they'd rather spend their money on drugs and lotto.
My my, aren't you sweet?

Food, especially mass produced breakfast food, like oatmeal with raisins, just isn't that expensive.

Freak'in Bean Counters ( accountants ) salaries are expensive.

It is probably cheaper to give out free food to anyone child who is hungry, than it is to start a program to determine who needs it, and who just wants it.

Additionally, by making the experience free for all, it takes the onus off of the child who is so poor, that they don't have food, and makes an experience of commendatory between the truly needy and those whose parent have it more together. This encourages the poor kids to accept the meals, rather than be shamed away from them.

I'd 10 X rather we (our Government ) spend a bit more to give free food to any hungry child, than set up yet another program with gives out special benefits based on RACE.

My Daughters received notifications of my grand children's notification of the school's Race Classifiers having determined that they have been designated as "White", even though their mothers are half Hispanic. On digging into the details, we found out that the school would have had the kids designated as "Hispanic" if they possibly could, because it would mean increased annual funding. Why?

This is why the Government / State employs specific, non-local-school based Race Classifiers, to look at children who have on their forms, parents of mixed race, to make the determination of "Race". That way, none of those evil White appearing Hispanics can receive True-Hispanic only preferences, privileges and funding!

Is that the kind of "Racial Means Testing" you'd prefer in Baltimore?

Not yet anyway. They do however take the children away for about any cause they feel is necessary.

Yeah, but that's not related to this topic. You can make claims that Child Services is exceptionally inept and aggressive, I'd likely agree. But schools providing meals for all its students doesn't quite fall under the level of the "state eliminating parents" as some would claim.

It's the progressives taking over more of our lives at the tax payer expense. They love living under the control of government.

How much money am I being forced to pay to blow up kids all over the Middle East? Feeding some of our own is one of the least harmful things our government has done.

Geez. And if you support things like the Patriot Act and all this free reign surveillance against the People we run under the guise of fighting terrorism, then it's awfully ironic that you'd claim others love living under the control of government.

It's on it's way of eliminating parents. This is just another step in the process of the ultimate goal. Government knows better than you.

It's breakfast for kids at school. It doesn't control your life. You can still feed your kids all the cocoa puffs you like.

Yeah, making sure kids get meals....so draconian.

Meanwhile y'all are out there supporting true fascism and Big Brother tactics against the people.

Right. Democrats don't like their kids.

What's this got to do with government taking over feeding the kids. Yeah that's right government thinks your stupid and they know better than you what to feed them for breakfast and lunch and dinner.

The drama queening going on over feeding our children. Wow. It's like we've decided to drone bomb them instead or something.

Considering the massive level of **** my tax dollars go towards supporting, feeding our children is one of the most benign things we could hope to do.

You know it's legal to feed your children before they go to school, right?

How about some of our kids are going hungry, and an aggregate school breakfast/lunch program can ensure at least some minimal level of nutrition to our children.

You can still make your kids breakfast and pack their lunches if you want. They do not have to eat the prepared school lunches. But by including them in the nominal costs of schooling, we can ensure that they all have access to at least some minimal standard.

Jesus tap dancing christ on a pogo stick. Y'all act like we're going to Clockwork Orange these kids by allowing them to eat.

I guess that is what you can call it. Others call it overstepping bounds and excusing lack of parental responsibility. This is a crushing problem. Shame some are not interested in actually addressing it. They'd just rather spend other peoples money to curry favors, and move the parents out of the way.

Yeah, next thing you know those darn progressives are a-gonna make education free through college so students aren't saddled with 50K in debt the day they graduate, and they're a-gonna make health care single-payer so workers can, you know, WORK instead of being sick at home! We should go back to the good ol' days of "don't get sick, but if you do get sick, die quickly", which is the way REAL 'Mericans oughta live!
