Way to go Senator Paul!

NSA Domestic Surveillance Program Expires After Senate Fails to Reach Deal - ABC News

The NSA's domestic surveillance program expired at midnight after the Senate failed to reach a deal to pass legislation Sunday evening. The expiration came after the Senate convened for a rare Sunday session to deal with the expiring provisions of the Patriot Act. Before adjourning without reaching a deal, the Senate made some progress, clearing a key procedural hurdle on the USA Freedom Act, but due to procedural objections by Sen. Rand Paul, the Senate was unable to hold any additional votes to move forward with the measure. Three key provisions of the Patriot Act expired at midnight -- Section 215, which authorizes the NSA's bulk collection of Americans' phone records; a roving wiretap provision that allows law enforcement officials to monitor terror suspects that use multiple phones; and a program that officials can use to monitor "lone wolf" terror suspects, not connected to any known terrorist organizations.

A very nice temporary win.

Good.

I saw McConnell yelling on the floor about "no evidence that this program has been abused".

That's not good enough. A massive dragnet type collection mechanism should never have been implemented in the first place, Senator. Whether or not there is hard evidence of said system being abused is irrelevant.

Somebody should have yelled back "No evidence that this program has hindered terrorism."

Somebody should have yelled back "No evidence that this program has hindered terrorism."

Or, "we have not caught anyone using this program."

Can't imagine why anyone would trust big government, i. e. Big Brother. I guess they have no foresight.

I never would have thought that this would have worked. I imagined that Congress would delay the renewal of these unnecessary programs and then renew them at the 11th hour so I went to bed not caring. I must have missed some great television if McConnell had a meltdown!

It's great news, though I imagine government will find a workaround.

Odds are a replacement bill sold to the public with some other catchy title. Similar to the Patriot Act (which had nothing to do with patriotism) we will see the Freedom Act come from this (which has nothing to do with freedom.)

this is largely a publicity stunt, and the expired parts of the patriot act will be quickly renewed. however, i have to give credit where credit is due : good job, Senator Paul. i admit being surprised that you succeeded, even if it is a temporary success.

Where are all the liberals that were screaming "fascism" when this passed originally calling Bush and Cheney monsters? Now, "Change is coming to America" the first black president is fighting for his life to get this invasion reinstated. I guess the constant pecking by liberals to instill and maintain big government is working well for them. "Better Safe Than Free" should be Clinton's motto for the coming election.

1-It will be back
2-Show of hands ANYONE that believes it is actually suspended and in fact NOT still going on as we speak...

This program and Obama's response to Snowden's reveal have received a huge amount of criticism from liberals. Where have you been?

This is all just a show. If this stays in place all the provisions will be back in either a bull**** titled law or find themselves in some unrelated bill and passed back into law. Why people are still tricked by the government is beyond me.
