Hastert Case Is Said to Be Linked to Decades-Old Sexual Abuse

Really? Even an allegation can end someone's career. Just ask Washingon senator Brock Adams about that, the allegations were never proven against Adams and he denies them, but he abandoned a reelection bid over them.

Hastert could've paid him off just to avoid allegations.... There is no proof of actual sex abuse here, none will be prosecuted either

40 years later though?

Yes, I believe that's in the article: hoisted by his own petard

That's "hoist." Just FYI. Sorry; can't help myself. Shakespeare, you know.

But why wait 40 years to blackmail the man?

First, it probably was shame, or it could be seeing some other people get hit with accusations, and heard that those people were doing it for the money, and decided to do that himself. It is all speculation though, because we do not know who 'subject a' is.

For all we know, this could be a compensation for psychological damage Hasert caused, or it could just be straight up blackmail. There is just too little information available.

I don't think it was shame.

The receiver of the money called into a radio show where Hastert was being interviewed and taunted him.

That doesn't sound like somebody that wants to hide their identity.

Who's to say it just started now?

Maybe they had a "thing" all these years and there was a falling out. Frankly, I don't know and I really don't care. I really have no sympathy for a guy who can't keep his junk in his pants much less a guy who has a sexual relationship with one (or more) of his high school students.
