They killed the death penalty!

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/28/us/nebraska-abolishes-death-penalty.html

Nebraska on Wednesday became the first conservative state in more than 40 years to abolish the death penalty, with lawmakers defying their Republican governor, Pete Ricketts, a staunch supporter of capital punishment who had lobbied vigorously against banning it. By a 30 to 19 vote that cut across party lines, the Legislature overrode the governor’s veto on Tuesday of a bill repealing the state’s death penalty law. The measure garnered just enough votes to overcome the veto.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

I've been on the fence for years about the death penalty, but all things considered it may be a very good thing to move away from its use.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

And those the most evil of criminals will not be probably punished in Nebraska.

Uhh, what? It's not like they just let them go.

Some people just have it coming though. That said, there have been 3 executions in Nebraska since 1978. So...

True but Life in prison is not always the fitting of punishment for certain crimes.

It would be one thing if a guy shoots up a cafeteria and kills 15 people before the police apprehend him, and 50 people having dinner at the place identify him as the gunmen, but our system has administered the death penalty to far too many innocent people where there was scant evidence. I can't imagine a worse ending to life. And sense the discovery of positive identification by DNA, there's been a lot of people released from prison by retrial using DNA testing on old evidence. I'd rather ten guilty people spend there lives in prison as to see one innocent man hanged.

well, if that guy kills 15..or even 50 in a Nebraska cafeteria... he'll get the same exact punishment as a guy who kills 1.

seems fair

That's precisely why I oppose the death penalty, because its risky.

When considering a particular punishment, I find it helpful to remember there is a 100% chance that it will be sometimes inflicted upon an innocent person.

the punishment I was talking about was life without parole, not the death penalty.

murder 1... murder 100.... murder a 10000
there's no difference .....

brutally rape a person... or kill them.... no difference.

I think there are ways to make the applications of the death penalty better.... taking it off the tables isn't very just.. or smart.

Oh, I see. So that's similar to what I was saying, I might support the death penalty only in those cases that are cut and dry, the jury deliberates for a minute. I don't want the guy charged with murder in which there are no witnesses, and based upon what "evidence" there is, a jury deliberates for two weeks, give that dude life. But apparently they don't want to do it that way, it's all or nothing, so at this point, I say nothing.

If only states and individuals morally opposed to legally taking the lives of others would apply the same to abortion we'd be set.

I don't really disagree.... as I said, our application can be a lot better in many ways.

doesn't matter though... not in Nebraska and the other states who have taken it off the table.

additionally, even if it's not used, it can still be a good bargaining chip for prosecutors...
it would probably be a better policy if they kept it on the table, but gave the DA a firm set of standards of when to employ it,.... it's better than scrapping it anyways.
sure, it doesn't' sell well in bleeding heart populist circles... but it's a much better policy.

Blatant derail attempts from the mods. Love it.

yeah.. it's kinda odd how these two issues have similar underlying premises, but both sides of both issues remain consistency inconsistent. ( myself included)

I'll take ten guilty guys doing life then one innocent man sent to the death chambers. We only get one life, and for me, it's got to be cut-and-dry!!!! Put yourself in the innocent guys shoes.

It's interesting that the same people who proclaim the government can't do anything right are strongly behind having the government kill you.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

Congratulations Nebraska for leading most of the rest of the country toward enlightenment. One day every state across America will abolish the death penalty and America will become more like our allies and less like the third world countries and our enemies. Its not about what the defendant did...its about what the death penalty says about us.

A realization that many are coming to is that although you might agree with the death penalty in theory, it isn't worth the cost to our system and the way in which it is implemented is often arbitrary and unjust.
