Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty[W:203]

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

Congratulations Nebraska for leading most of the rest of the country toward enlightenment. One day every state across America will abolish the death penalty and America will become more like our allies and less like the third world countries and our enemies. Its not about what the defendant did...its about what the death penalty says about us.

It is worth asking ourselves whether this is a list we want to be on for a matter of the criminal justice system.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

I'll take ten guilty guys doing life then one innocent man sent to the death chambers. We only get one life, and for me, it's got to be cut-and-dry!!!! Put yourself in the innocent guys shoes.

you'll make a fine bumper-sticker slogan man one day.

Fine. In the meantime, good to see there's others thinking straight.

that's an extremely poor argument.... there are much much better ones out there.

Yeah, like the other one I posted.

this one?
It's interesting that the same people who proclaim the government can't do anything right are strongly behind having the government kill you

...that's even worse than the "list" argument.

That wasn't an argument, no.

What's yours?

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

pretty much what i said in post #14 and #17.

getting rid of the death penalty altogether is dumb... and vastly improving it's application is a much better policy.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

Good, we should get rid of it in general. It's no longer necessary.

Wrong! It's more than necessary and they need to do it to more of these scum....

liberal dopes don't have a clue of what heinous monsters these people are. Keeping them alive to victimize others and bleed the taxpayers.... is like allowing a Black Widow to live on your property.

Executing these cockroaches is a benefit to society and stops them from victimizing others....for****ingever!

Can't make an omelette without cracking a few eggs, amiright?

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

Some people just have it coming though. That said, there have been 3 executions in Nebraska since 1978. So...

The problem I have is the association of capital punishment to deterrence in crime. We have too many conflicting studies on this being something that impacts crime levels.

Do the same "studies" (usually a term that really describes pretty meaningless waste of paper and money) indicate that other forms of punishment do deter crime? Do you conclude from that we better stop punishing crime?

If you have no interest in the studies, then why bother asking about them?

That pretty much answers my question, doesn't it.

I don't need a "study" to tell me that punishment doesn't deter all crime. Nor do I need a "study" to tell me that no executed murderer has ever murdered again.

And for the record: while I feel the death penalty is a necessity and an appropriate punishment in some cases, I believe it should be used very sparingly.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

are you saying i'm not thinking straight?

Not at all, you and I somewhat agreed. I'm talking about the Nebraska legislators.

People have been erroneously convicted, it happens more than you may think.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

As a Nebraskan I'm disappointed. For some crimes I think that a person deserve to die. Just a couple weeks ago this young guy here murdered his mother and thenthrew his 5 year old half brother over a bridge into a river during a thunderstorm while the boy was alive. Do you think the boy survived? Hell no! Excuse me if I don't care for this jerk to live.

We had a Texas case where a guy lured a little girl out of a Walmart then strangled and burned her to death. I honestly don't understand how anyone could not want someone like that dead.

This is were the selective/sparingly approach to the application of the death penalty would be nice. Unfortunately, that's never the option, it's always all or nothing! I understand your anger at this pos.

Re: Nebraska Abolishes Death Penalty

Why is it a poor argument to you? I find it one of the most compelling arguments.

The cost of the death penalty is knowing that it can never always be applied justly and that the state will kill people in your name that did nothing to deserve it.
I'm not willing to pay that price.

As a death penalty opponent, generally*, I wouldn't, so long as the jury saw overwhelming evidence to convict! with very little deliberation, and in the jury room there wasn't a single juror who had to be drug along. We just don't get to have it that way. My opposition to the death penalty doesn't follow the hard liners that think two wrongs don't make a right argument. I'm concerned about false convictions, and innocent people being put to death, which has happened too frequently.
