Swiss authorities conducted an extraordinary early-morning operation here Wednesday to arrest several top soccer officials and extradite them to the United States on federal corruption charges. As leaders of FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, gathered for their annual meeting, more than a dozen plainclothes Swiss law enforcement officials arrived unannounced at the Baur au Lac hotel, an elegant five-star property with views of the Alps and Lake Zurich. They went to the front desk to get room numbers and then proceeded upstairs. The arrests were carried out peacefully. One FIFA official, Eduardo Li of Costa Rica, was led by the authorities from his room to a side-door exit of the hotel. He was allowed to bring his luggage, which was adorned with FIFA logos. The charges, backed by an F.B.I. investigation, allege widespread corruption in FIFA over the past two decades, involving bids for World Cups as well as marketing and broadcast deals.

Several hours after the soccer officials were apprehended at the hotel, Swiss authorities said they had opened criminal cases related to the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups — incidents that, more than any others, encapsulated FIFA’s unusual power dynamic. “In the course of said proceedings,” the Swiss officials said, “electronic data and documents were seized today at FIFA’s head office in Zurich.” The arrests were a startling blow to FIFA, a multibillion-dollar organization that governs the world’s most popular sport but has been plagued by accusations of bribery for decades. The inquiry is also a major threat to Sepp Blatter, FIFA’s longtime president who is generally recognized as the most powerful person in sports, though he was not charged. Blatter has for years acted as a de facto head of state. Politicians, star players, national soccer officials and global corporations that want their brands attached to the sport have long genuflected before him.

The Swiss legal system doesn't really have much of a record for clamping down on corruption, money-laundering and financial shenanigans of the wealthy and connected. I'd have a bit more faith in the likelihood of those arrested in Miami actually taking some heat, but even then, I doubt it'll amount to much and will be stretched out over so many years that the culprits will have many years yet to enjoy their ill-gotten gains. As Gary Lineker has been quoted as saying: "There can't be a more corrupt, deplorable organisation on earth than Fifa. The house of cards is falling. Time for change!" I agree, and I hope the house of cards falls quickly and entirely, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Great, just great. Break international laws of an organization headquartered in Zurich regarding a world sport that is not big in the US and not even understood by most of the people in the US and what country becomes all butt hurt over FIFA bribery charges? Give me a feckin break! The US - a nation that openly operates on bribery at the highest levels.

WTF is wrong with this picture? If I lived in another country I'd have to ask myself if there is anything on earth that the sanctimonious assholes of the US can leave to other nations? It's appalling and frankly embarrassing.

In the context of US involvement the OP almost sounds like an Onion article.

You're wrong. I think most people outside the US will be saying "thank God someone's prepared to take them on!" I think that it really takes an organisation with the resources of the FBI to have the ability to investigate this incredibly complex and wide-ranging web of corruption. It might be a bit ironic that they aren't prepared to tackle, for example, corruption in the NCAA, or in Wall Street, but whatever the poor motive, I'm delighted FIFA's finally going to get some come-uppance.

If you doubt how merited that appointment with Nemesis might be, take a look at this:

Personally, I think this is freaking hilarious.

What we're doing is slapping Europe in the face. The puritans over there are always yelling about US over one thing or another, so good'nuff for'em.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Fifa as an organization makes the NCAA look positively benign in comparison.

Nope. Every football fan worldwide is ecstatic about this.

Well, the officials arrested are all American.

Well, the officials arrested are all American.

And soccer is a European game...

Really? You'd better tell that to the Brazilians and the Argentinians and Uruguayans who are all quite sure it's an American sport too.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Well, the officials arrested are all American.

I think that's because that's all the FBI has the authority to arrest. Let's see if the results of this investigation get shared with countries and if they follow suit.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

I think that's because that's all the FBI has the authority to arrest.
Those that were arrested were of half-a-dozen different nationalities, all detained in Zürich and Miami, so it's not a question of authority or jurisdiction but of cooperation with other nations and their LE agencies.

When I said they were all American, I didn't mean they were all from the US. I meant American, as opposed to European or Asian.

United States law enforcement officials declared in forceful terms on Wednesday that their broad investigation of FIFA had only begun and pledged to rid the international soccer organization of systemic corruption.

The Justice Department, F.B.I. and I.R.S. described soccer’s governing body in terms normally reserved for Mafia families and drug cartels, saying that top officials treated FIFA business decisions as chits to be traded for personal wealth. One soccer official took in more than $10 million in bribes, Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said.

The schemes involving the fraud included the selection of South Africa as the host of the 2010 World Cup; the 2011 FIFA presidential elections; and several sports-marketing deals.

Uh oh, FIFA.....

This is huge.

"The promise that the investigation would continue raised the specter of more arrests, but officials would not comment on whether they were investigating Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president and the man widely regarded as the most powerful person in sports. One federal law enforcement official said Mr. Blatter’s fate would “depend on where the investigation goes from here.”

LOL that corrupt bastard will go to jail.

It is a big deal and not a surprise in the slightest, people have been suspecting the FIFA of fraud and corruption for years now.

I dunno, they were in on the scam as well.:) The first growth of the game started in England :2wave:

I don't think it's huge. It's unsurprising. I'm shocked that the 2010 selection of SA is under scrutiny. If there's any investigation that should be made it should be the selection of Qatar in 2022. Here' comes the conspiracy theorists claiming that this is Obama's revenge for Chicago not being selected in 3...2...1...

Read the article. The 2022 world cup IS under investigation.

They also proved that several previous selections, gold cups, etc were all corrupted. And they are investigating (and presumably building a legal case against) Sepp Blatter himself.

Don't blame us when some fecker is droned for pulling a yellow card. Once the US gets involved we'll tart up the game till you won't recognize it and no one making less than 200,000 euro a year will be able to afford a ticket to a match and all regional games will be blacked out or purchased at premium prices on the telly.

The US won't get involved unless there is big money to be made by US mega corporations.

Just a friendly warning.

Stop your whining. Jesus Christ. If these FIFA officials were engaged in bribery and corruption, they belong in jail. Good thing someone is going after them. Hopefully other nations (Great Britain maybe) join in and begin pursuing investigations of their own.

But they're not all American, the 14 people arrested were from a number of different nations.
