FIFA Inquiry Yields Indictments; U.S. Officials Vow to Pursue More

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

every football fan in the world is loving this, its so overdue.

Fifa officials 'corrupted' football - US prosecutors - BBC News

20 years they are saying???? Unreal.

Good, then time to take the next step and it's time for European nations to start launching investigations and pressing charges as well. Don't let the first shot fired be the last.

Let's pile on them and really start taking the corrupt bastards down.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Breaking: Swiss authorities have launched their own criminal inquiry into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Swiss police raided Fifa's headquarters in Zurich and seized electronic evidence.

United States law enforcement officials declared in forceful terms on Wednesday that their broad investigation of FIFA had only begun and pledged to rid the international soccer organization of systemic corruption.

The Justice Department, F.B.I. and I.R.S. described soccer’s governing body in terms normally reserved for Mafia families and drug cartels, saying that top officials treated FIFA business decisions as chits to be traded for personal wealth. One soccer official took in more than $10 million in bribes, Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said.

The schemes involving the fraud included the selection of South Africa as the host of the 2010 World Cup; the 2011 FIFA presidential elections; and several sports-marketing deals.

Uh oh, FIFA.....

This is huge.

Right! We get a new US Attorney General and what does she go after? An international sport headquartered in Europe and barely followed in the US. Brilliant! LOL! Most of the people in the US could have provided her names and even leads regarding mega crimes committed by US banking. Hint: It's been covered in the press for at least 6 years. Washington somehow is unaware. Guess they've been watching footie instead.

And when does the FBI send out indictments and begin the arrests? ONE DAY AFTER THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP! :2rofll: Think there might have been some collusion involved in that? Oh, I think so. :lamo No doubt the timing was coordinated between the monied powers in the US and the UK so as not to besmirch the championship and, you know, cost the league any money.

FIFA just shook hands with the devil and the international soccer fandom doesn't know it yet.

Soon the US will insist that there be an impartial international observer, one that everyone can trust. Bill Clinton's your man. $10 million donated to his philanthropic organization <wink, wink, nudge, nudge> and a steady flow young and willing women.

They'll be more of that where that came from too. Look for it. Don't say Risky didn't warn you.

Full disclosure: I actually enjoy watching the game. I won't tell you I understand all of it. But if I were a betting man I'd be rolling in it right now. I called Chelsea at the beginning of the season. By the way I think Remy played an awesome game against Sunderland and didn't get the recognition he deserved, at least not over here at any rate.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Go sit in a corner.

I don't care for the game, I never have. It's an import that has been played mostly by immigrants. It's safe for the kiddies so it became a trend with it's own character: the "soccer mom".

So, I don't sit in the corner, I never have.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Stop your whining, Jesus Christ. If these FIFA officials were engaged in bribery and corruption, they belong in jail. Good thing someone is going after them. Hopefully other nations (Great Britain maybe) join in and begin pursuing investigations of their own.

I sincerely appreciate your nod to my wisdom and charm but I am not Jesus Christ. However, I have noted your amazing sense of morality and ethics. I have no doubt whatsoever you will forever apply it equally to all things. No fear. If I find in the future that you have missed something and have somehow become jaded or even partial, God forbid, it will be my pleasure to bring it to your attention so that you may remain the honest and pleasant person you are today.

Good, you do that. Meanwhile, rather than ask "why is the US going after FIFA", what you should be asking yourself is "why, after 20 years of corruption, has no other nation gone after FIFA?"

It's not hard to see what's going on here.

This is a match between Clinton and Blatter.

Clinton was responsible for getting the US the 2022 World Cup bid. He personally made the presentation to the committee. Bill Clinton was personally embarrassed, and allegations of corruption at FIFA start to swirl around. Clinton calls up some buddies at the state dept, and the investigation begins.

Sepp Blatter may be a mafia boss, but Bill Clinton is the king of all mafia bosses. If I'm a betting man, I'm taking Clinton 4 to 1 odds on this one. Blatter will be gonzo in short notice and we may see the 2022 World Cup re-awarded to either the US or UK. Calling it now.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Don't blame us when some fecker is droned for pulling a yellow card. Once the US gets involved we'll tart up the game till you won't recognize it and no one making less than 200,000 euro a year will be able to afford a ticket to a match and all regional games will be blacked out or purchased at premium prices on the telly.

The US won't get involved unless there is big money to be made by US mega corporations.

Just a friendly warning.

By 'we', I assume you are an American? If I hated my country as much as you seem to, I'd leave. Pull a Snowden and head for Moscow. They love folks like you there.

Or sure it will, the news is saying that the head of FIFA will probably be reelected. It's not a spot on the game itself, it's a spot on the greedy SOBs running it.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

True, but if people honestly believe the game is tainted with corruption, bribery, payoffs, and so forth.... that very likely will have an effect on the game's popularity.

Look at what the steroid scandal did to baseball in the united states. It went from being the #1 sport in the 90's to #3 or #4 now. Look at what happened to boxing with its match-fixing scandals... that was once the #1 sport, now it's barely top 10.

I know for my part, anecdotal evidence of course, I am a big soccer fan when the World Cup comes around. However, this does taint soccer in a major way in my eyes.

I do believe that the decision committee was bribed, that the USA and UK were robbed of hosting world cups, and I would not be surprised to hear that referees were being paid off and that matches, groupings, pools, etc were rigged.

Those beliefs negatively affect how I, as an American, view soccer. And it's too bad, because the sport was just starting to take off stateside. But honestly, why would I want to waste my time viewing rigged matches sent to me from Qatar thanks to a hefty bribe from the Qatari friendship committee?

This kind of thing is off-putting, I'm going back to Super Bowls which at least I can trust have some aspect of sportsmanship.

But they're not all American,
They were, just not all USAmericans

the 14 people arrested were from a number of different nations.
True, but all American nations, no European, Asian or African.

They were all from CONCACAF but not all Americans. I want to say Trinadad and Tobago, USA, Mexico, some carribean countries. But the American FBI had jurisdiction since CONCACAF is headquartered in Miami and a lot of the crimes took place on US soil / via US banks, or something like that.

I don't really care, I just hope they get Sepp Blatter, that guy is the worst.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

Great, just great. Break international laws of an organization headquartered in Zurich regarding a world sport that is not big in the US and not even understood by most of the people in the US and what country becomes all butt hurt over FIFA bribery charges? Give me a feckin break! The US - a nation that openly operates on bribery at the highest levels.

WTF is wrong with this picture? If I lived in another country I'd have to ask myself if there is anything on earth that the sanctimonious assholes of the US can leave to other nations? It's appalling and frankly embarrassing.

In the context of US involvement the OP almost sounds like an Onion article.

Regardless of any wrongdoing done by say, the USOC in securing bids to atlanta 1994 or salt lake olympics, that doesn't mean these FIFA assholes deserve a free pass. The world cup should not be taking place in russia or qatar - where nearly 2000 construction workers have been killed thanks to these bribes, and yes, some of us do care about that.

As for your claims of bias, there is this bit: "receiving bribes to influence the decision of where tournaments should be hosted - including the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and the 2016 Copa America in the US"

Notice the upcoming tournament in the US is part of the case

What's especially hilarious about this is the FIFA prez lashing out at any and every remote suggestion of a boycott. Well now everyone has plenty of reason to carry out those threats

Ah, I see you believe that 'American' refers only to people from the USA. It doesn't.

Re: FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Sepp Blatter Isn’t Among Them

LOL oh, you're one of those guys. Carry on.

So what do you call someone from Venezuela or Costa Rica? A European? An Asian? If not, what?

Y'know, in Spanish the word 'americano' doesn't refer to people from the US at all. Use that word and people always think of someone from a Latin American country. An American from the US is always referred to as an 'estado-unidense'.

which includes the FIFA prez

He said this was "a difficult time for football, the fans and for Fifa as an organisation... such misconduct has no place in football and we will ensure that those who engage in it are put out of the game".

^worthless concession, you prove your sincerity by disqualifying the hosts. This is like "punishing" tom brady but allowing him to play in the super bowl. Here we have a 3-8 year notice and if russia/qatar are allowed to host, it will be a serious disgrace for soccer

It will, but it will happen. No one's going to take those WCs away. The organisation of football is already utterly disgraced, nothing that happens now can make it better or worse.

I speak Spanish as well, I lived in Chile for two years. I love the Chilean people, I love the Spanish language, but what you're saying is one minor thing that gets under my skin a little bit.

We're Americans. And by that, I mean the United States of America... we're Americans. Mexicans are not Americans. Colombians are not Americans. If I go to England or Africa or China and I say I'm from America, nobody is going to be confused and wonder whether I'm from Argentina or Bolivia.

In the entire rest of the world.... USA = America

It's just certain Latin Americans trying to be snooty, and I don't support that for a minute. The USA was the first independent nation on the North or South American continents. We were calling ourselves "Americans" before those countries even existed. Ridiculous to expect us to change that today.

By the way, the word they use in Chile is "norteamericano"..... you never hear "estadounidiense"

Brazilians, who speak Portuguese, call Americans "Americanos." I guess they're more laid back and don't have quite the bug up their asses.

I've never heard a Canadian refer to me as anything other than an American.... likewise I think a Canadian would be offended if I called him an American.

No, not exclusively. Maybe in Texas, but not everywhere. I was very clear when I made the first comment - "True, but all American nations, no European, Asian or African" - just so as not to confuse poor little chauvinists such as yourself that I was referring to the continent, not the USA.

Tough titties. You can assume whatever you will, but when describing residents of the 5 continents there are Europeans, Asians, Africans, Australasians and...Americans.

I don't use the word in order to confuse anyone or to falsely accuse the US of anything. I just use it because it is the correct term, and I qualify it in order to avoid any possible confusion.

There is no continent called "America," there are two continents: North America and South America.

All over the world excluding Spanish-Speaking Latin America, if you say the word "American," that means someone from the United States.

You're a native English-speaker, that's obvious enough. Cut the crap. You were trying to make a point, and, guess what.... point heard. Understood. You're not the first to make it. But 350 million Americans, 100 million Canadians, and billions of others around the world are going to keep calling people from my country "Americans"

I'll be among them.

The whole debacle is a non-issue though in the real world, but you know that already.
