Same-sex marriage on course to be approved by Ireland [W:112]

As far as I can tell it is practically approved. Of course, plebiscite derives from a word that indicates that though the decision is democratic and legal, it never the less is based in the desires and intelligence of the street. That is not to say it is wrong. Only that sometimes the consequence will be less than intellectual. ;)

Fantastic news, little else needs to be said.

Sad that a referendum is even needed.. cant believe the media are pushing that narrative as a positive.. pathetic.

It is projected that only one constituency in the entire country will vote no.

That does not make the thing smarter.
Nope. It just makes you the lonely one who opposes equality-- and then you'll be smarter than the rest of the world!

And once again....the United States falls behind the rest of the world.

Who cares?.....little else needs to be said.

Looks like it was a blowout.

I agree, i was always opposed to voters deciding civil rights one way or the other. That's what a constitution and the courts are for

Yeah when it finally becomes reality here we can gloat "We're #18!"

Which is about our place in a great many categories these days

Just on a pendantic note the referendum was on whether to change the consitution so that gay marriage can become legal. Consitutions can be wrong, especially in Ireland.

a constitution alterable by the mob is not what i had in mind to begin with either

However, i'm not sure you're correct that the constitution had explicitly banned gay marriage. While i'm not going to pour through the full irish constitution, here is what i found:

Article 41
1° The State pledges itself to guard with special care the institution of marriage, on which the family is founded, and to protect it against attack.

The dozens of ways one could interpret that...

Yes, constitutions can be horribly wrong, in the US notably prohibition, and public sentiment does have some sway, but i'm far more comfortable with civil rights being guarded by the educated elite than what we saw transpire in state after state here thanks to the ignorant masses.

If that was not accomplished in ireland prior to a public vote, by way of court rulings or whatever, then there is systemic ailment in the irish political system, such as granting the masses too much power over minorities. Why even have a government if it's going to be so useless

Gay marriage approved in Ireland.

Just shows they're Biblically and spiritually challenged also.

Sounds like famous last words from Sodom and Gomorrah.

Didn't people used to use the Bible to defend slavery and the subjugation of women? I wonder how the whole anti-gay thing will turn out...

Unless they repent it won't be so good for them at the Judgment.

You'd think a supreme being wouldn't be so jealous and judgmental. Those sound like very human traits to me.
