I can't say I actually expected the trade bill to be stopped.

Trade bill clears Senate hurdle - CNNPolitics.com

A free trade initiative that is pitting President Barack Obama against his own party cleared a major procedural hurdle in the Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday. The 62-38 vote to end debate on the bill, moving it toward a final vote, was a victory for Obama, who had linked with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, to push the bill despite opposition from Senate Democratic leaders. McConnell said he's willing to consider a host of amendments that Democrats are poised to offer later Thursday. "This last vote was a major step forward on this important legislation," said Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican who sponsored the bill.

The Senate is now set to vote on changes to the bill, including one that would force the Obama administration to use trade deals to crack down on countries that manipulate the value of their currencies to give their exports a price advantage in the United States — an amendment the White House opposes because it would add a huge new complication into trade negotiations. Even though Senate passage is ultimately now much more likely, the House could be tougher. There, tea party conservatives are linking up with liberals to form a broader populist opposition than what existed in the Senate. The measure would hand the President six years' worth of "trade promotion authority" — the power to submit trade deals to Congress for an up-or-down vote with limited debate and no amendments.

;)

Speaker John Boehner said in his weekly news conference that Cantwell asked him to guarantee a vote on it, and he said he “would not make that commitment.”

With the cloture vote now behind them, senators must reach an agreement over amendments, with a vote on the final passage of the TPA legislation expected sometime Friday. Its fate in the House, however, which is likely to consider trade sometime next month, is much less certain.....snip~

Well ****. Figured that this was going to move forward, but I always had hope. Most likely will fly through the house pretty quickly.

As much as I would love to see John Boehner kill this legislation, thats over a promise to possibly have a vote on an export-import bank.

What more did he need to say.....they aren't looking at anything over trade until next month.

of course it did. if it ****s workers over in favor of cheap labor, it will always pass. did anyone really think that it wasn't set in stone from the moment it was proposed?

I totally agree.

I wonder why liberal Obama hates workers? Thats what you get for voting for him.

that's what you get for voting for any president.

THE BUSH RECORD - FACT SHEET: President Bush Expanded And Enforced Trade Agreements To Open New Markets For American Products

hint : purchased trade agreements are delivered regardless of the R or D next to the president's name.

Im for getting us closer to a free market, not defending the special interests of unions.

Im not entirely sure why Obama wanted this (as many dems did not) but to quote george carlin-sometimes the sun shines on even a dogs ass.

he wanted it because he's a corporatist like most other politicians. his benefactors want more cheap labor.

What offends me is our supposedly democratic government thinking it has the right to pass trade deals that are kept secret from the American people.

We have a right to know what our government is doing to us, and we have the right to address our grievances to our representatives.

Well apparently conservatives disagree when it comes to trade, and on this, they've got Obama in their corner! Isn't this a sight.

Maybe you should be about finding out why Obama wants this!

Supporters say such agreements benefit the American economy by lowering barriers overseas and expanding markets for U.S. services and goods.

But in rebuttal that became particularly pronounced two decades ago when President Bill Clinton sought and won a North American Free Trade Agreement, labor unions and Democratic allies in Congress argue the deals cost jobs at home and send them to nations with lax environmental and safety standards and low wages.

My Way News - Obama's trade bill narrowly clears a key Senate hurdle

Sounds like the dems are more worried about anti-competition unions. Nothing but the same old story.
Earlier in the week I read that the GOP will get all the credit.

I look forward to the posturing from the left in the house.

I hope the GOPer's do get all the blame for TPP.

And....so.....Like the article mentioned. Its fate in the House is less certain.

I think one can say quite confidently that the House is going to pass this piece of legislation, and probably pretty easily, especially since Republicans and Obama essentially openly agree on the TPP and the "fast track" authority.

Evidently, the writer of that piece didn't have the same thought for some reason. Until it happens, then you will have that answer.

Well thats fine. I think its pretty silly to believe the future of this legislation is a "unknown"... Republicans are pretty damn open about where they stand on the TPP.

Then again other things do come up, and some plans don't get fast tracked. So it is silly to think.....that its not ever happened before.

I never said its never happened before or other things wont come up. But I think the House of Representatives is going to pass this piece of legislation.

Eventually, for the mean time. Boehner didn't see it as most urgent matter to be fast tracked, did he?

Because its expected to be worked next month? usual track of legislation.
