McDonald's boss says he's "proud" of wages as thousands of workers call for a rise | Business | The Guardian

Thousands of McDonald’s employees and union activists descended on the company’s headquarters near Chicago on Thursday to hold the biggest ever protest against “poverty wages” paid to most of its 400,000 employees, as the company’s board gathered for its annual shareholder meeting. About 5,000 McDonald’s employees from across the US chanted: “We work, we sweat, put $15 in our cheque” as they marched towards the burger giant’s headquarters holding banners reading “McDonald’s: $15 and Union Rights, Not Food Stamps.” As the meeting began protesters delivered a petition signed by 1.4m people calling on the company to support a $15 minimum wage and to respect workers’ rights to unionize.

“We’re here to tell McDonald’s and its shareholders to invest in the company and its workers instead of wealthy hedge fund managers and executives,” said Kwanza Brooks, a McDonald’s worker and mother of three from Charlotte, North Carolina, who is paid $7.25 an hour. “We’re tired of relying on food stamps to feed our own families. We need $15 and the right to form a union and we need it now.” Terrence Wise, 35, travelled 12 hours by bus from Kansas City with his three young daughters. “Was it worth it to stand here? Yes definitely. I want my voice to be heard. I’ve worked at McDonald’s and Burger King for 11 years earning $8 an hour. I have three little girls to care for. I work two jobs, my partner works too, yet we still struggle to survive. We rely on food stamps. I don’t want to live on food stamps, I want to get paid what I deserve and work hard for. McDonald’s can clearly afford to pay us a living wage. They need to, now.”

Good news for the unemployed, there will be a bunch of job openings at McDonald's soon. Kwanza Brooks and Terrence Wise are soon to be on unemployment as well as food stamps. And if you've been making $8 an hour for the last 11 years and working at a fast food joint you're dumb as a sack of hammers and lucky to be getting $8 an hour.

They must have been really awful at flipping burgers not to get any yearly raises for 11 years

They can make $11 an hour packing peaches here in California. There is a sign up next to the highway, all in Spanish btw, advertising for workers.

No one should be trying to feed a family working at McDonalds. That sort of job is for teens looking for extra pocket money to buy gas and snacks, not for heads of households.

Unfortunately, all of the really high paying manufacturing jobs have fled to third world countries where the factories can pay pennies and dump their waste in the nearest river. That's what needs to change.

Most fast food places do not offer raises on a yearly basis, fyi.

they must have been not doing their job not to move up.
turnover for supervisor and manager positions is pretty routine.

back in my school days I knew a family their dad started working at mcdonalds worked start on the burger line>cashier>supervisor>manager and ended up owning 3 or 4 mcdonalds.
I find it interesting that they can't move beyond burger flipper or cashier.

my brother worked at mcdonalds when he was younger. minimum wage was 5.15 then. he got a .25 cent raise within a few weeks and then got another raise shortly after that.
of course he worked and went in when called and continued working etc ... he quit after a while and went to work at walmart for a bit.

that was before he got out of high school.

You know this how? What sort of fast food places are you talking about? Corporate owned, franchise, independent? There's quite a mix. I can tell you the corporate ones do.

sure they do. I know people that have been supervisors and managers. they give raises periodically.
you have to actually work and do a good job.

the biggest problem they have is people showing up on time or showing up at all.
finding people that will come in when needed.

if you just do the bare minimum to keep your job then you don't get a raise and you don't move up.

franchise owners might be a bit more stingy, but that is on them to give raises. 80% of Mcdonalds are franchised owned.

they can attempt to form a union however it will only affect that franchise owner.

So, these people agree to work at McDonald's knowing full well what the wages and benefits would be then turn around and try to extort more money out of the company without any added value. They would work the same job with the same efficiency but just think they deserve more money, but there are plenty of people who will work the job without complaining about the low pay. I don't believe that those jobs were ever meant to be anyone's career. They are mainly for younger people who are just getting started. They are meant for people who intend to move on to higher paying jobs. The CEO has every right to be proud that he employs so many people in starting level positions.

These complainers need to get some training and move on to a better paying job if they need the money.

In the meantime raising the wages would make the food McDonald's serves more expensive which would impact all the low income people who rely on McDonald's. I can't think of any other chain that offers a "dollar menu" where someone can get a pretty filling meal for less than $3. That's a valuable service. That would be a thing of the past if these complainers get their way.

Re: McDonald's boss says he's "proud" of wages as thousands of workers call for a ris

If this keeps up, some smart guy is going to design a BurgerMaster 3000 that will make burgers and fries automatically. You'll walk up to kiosk, tap in your order, swipe your card and in 2 minutes a bag of food will emerge on a conveyor for you to pick up. Then these dimwits will no longer be whining about wages, they'll be whining that their state issued food stamp card won't work at the kiosk.

McDonald's: 'Union attack' on the brand - May. 21, 2015

About 2,000 people took part in a peaceful protest Wednesday outside the fast-food chain's corporate offices in Oak Brook, Ill., according to the local police department. Organizers said 5,000 fast-food cooks and cashiers joined in the march.

On Thursday, protesters hope to deliver a petition with more than one million signatures calling on McDonald's (MCD) to raise wages to $15 an hour.

McDonald's charged the demonstrations are part of an $80-million publicity campaign by the Service Employees International Union, which is working to organize workers across the fast-food industry.

"The union has spent its members' dues money in the past two years attacking the McDonald's brand...in an unsuccessful attempt to unionize workers," the company said in a statement.

Fast food workers and those in other low-wage jobs have been taking to the streets over the past two years to demand wages of at least $15 an hour. Last year, more than 100 workers were arrested at McDonald's annual shareholder meeting.

Many McDonald's workers say they are forced to rely on public assistance, while the company has rewarded investors by buying back billions worth of stock over the years.

"It's time for McDonald's to respect the workers on the front lines as much as they have respected shareholders by putting $30 billion in their pockets over the last 10 years," said SEIU president Mary Kay Henry.
McDonald's said the company and its independent franchise owners "are standing strong and together in the face of this union attack."

and progressives wonder why unions are losing favor?

hey...i got an idea....let's attack Mcdonald's in an 80 million campaign with our workers dues.....

that has to be a GOOD USE for them, right?

lfmao....the stupidity

LOL

The beauty of these SEIU Union Thug backed actions is it illustrates just how pathetic many of these people truly are. $8/hr, for 11 years.

If that isn't a testament to the overall failure of our liberal education system, I don't know what could illustrate it better. 11 years of buying the company line from liberal/progressives, and now they are buying the line from one of the most corrupt labor unions in the United States.

Society doesn't need to set policy based on failure. It should set it based on examples of success.

Leave it to Prog/Libs to champion failure as a roll model for success.

It's not whether it's a full time job or not, it's just how valuable that job is in the market. Minimal value added jobs, such as fast food work, are going to be compensated at the market rate, which is minimum wage, and yes, this is poverty wages.

Fats food jobs are not meant to be a career, nor to support a family. Trying to do so isn't going to meet with success, and is frankly a very dumb idea to even try.

as they say you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

I run into people like that in my company. they like what they do and don't want to move up. and they are in base line entry level positions, but they complain that they don't make more.

getting promotion is how you make the money in my company.
I am up for a promotion this year. which will be nice. it will be my 4th promotion in 10 years. which isn't to bad.

well they can be but you have to really bust your ass when you are young so that you can move up quickly, but to do that you have to show drive and competency.
you have to show up on time and not make excuses.

Re: McDonald's boss says he's "proud" of wages as thousands of workers call for a ris

and this is the crux of the stupidity

most mcdonalds are NOT owned by the corporation

they are owned, and independently operated by franchisees

even if the CEO of mcdonalds wanted this to happen....he doesnt have the power

want to earn more than MW....learn a few skills.....go to work on time, everyday

when offered a chance at more responsibility....take it

when offered a chance to learn something else.....take it

that gets you raises and promotions

You know this how? What sort of fast food places are you talking about? Corporate owned, franchise, independent? There's quite a mix. I can tell you the corporate ones do.

I've worked at several during Highschool and College years.

First one was a Franchisee McDonalds, I was there over a year and a half. There was no raise given or promised and when I asked before I left, they told me they don't give yearly raises only when you change your position from say Crew Member to Supervisor or etc.

Second one was a Taco Johns, (local type Taco Bell), same deal its a regional franchisee and once again, after a year or so asking for a raise they said they don't offer them either.

I spent my due time in the fast food industry when I was younger, and yes those people do work more than some people realize. Its the same deal with retail employees, the hell that is customer service industry in general is often frowned upon by those that haven't been there before.

"Hur durr only dumb people work there" that is total BS.

I'm sure there are some that do, In-n-Out and Jack-In-the-Box are two I can think of off the top of my head, but they also don't pay minimum wage when you start.
