The article goes out of its way to not mention it, but it was the Syrian army under Assad who were able to push the terrorists back and recapture the city.

Syria conflict: IS 'withdraws' from ancient Palmyra - BBC News

Islamic State militants have been pushed back from the ancient Syrian site of Palmyra, officials and a monitoring group say. Militants seized part of the town of Tadmur on Saturday, which is located on a strategic east-west route next to Palmyra's World Heritage-listed ruins. Nearly 300 have reportedly died in four days of fighting.

Meanwhile, the number of militants reported killed in a rare US ground raid in Syria on Saturday rose to 32. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, said that among those killed were "IS oil chief Abu Sayyaf, the deputy IS defence minister, and an IS communications official". US officials had said about 12 militants were killed at the scene of the raid in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour. They said Abu Sayyaf had been killed in a firefight during the special forces raid, and his wife was captured.

This conflict may not come to an end any time soon, organizations like ISIS don't truly operate like countries, but I suspect ISIS will lose the ability to control territory soon. ISIS is simply too small and too weak to take over countries or to be a threat to western existence.

I honestly think Syria is going to be portioned up among Government and Rebel forces. Dont know what will happen to ISIS controlled areas though.

And if the tribes of Israel would of done as commanded by the Lord, this would not be a problem. Perhaps we should do as the Lord Commanded the Israelites to do and make ourselves pleasing in the eyes of the Lord.

While ISIS's abilities are limited, it still has some pretty strong capabilities within Syria and Iraq. Indeed, ISIS reportedly gained control of Ramadi this weekend.

You do know that ISIS has many tens of thousands of fighters and a lot of equipment and is actually gaining ground, right?

In some areas, yes they are gaining ground. Mostly because the Iraqi forces are horrible though.

Tens of thousands of fighters aren't really a lot, and most of the large equipment has been destroyed. They no longer have any airplanes, tanks, APCs, etc.

I dunno. ISIS is Sunni. They hate Shi'ite. Sunni is approximately 80% of the Muslim religion. If they get backing from the 80% or any significant portion of that 80%... like more support from Saudi Arabia. Look out.

Well whatever the hell they have, it just made the Iraqi Security Forces using US equipment and training, leave their wounded, and their equipment, again, in Ramadi and run.

That's true, but the Iraqi military runs from EVERONE. Why do you think it was possible for us to invade Iraq twice, so quickly and with so few invasion casualties?

A troop of girl scouts could take over most large Iraqi cities in a matter of days.

Lol. Well to be fair, there's not many armies in the world that could stand up to the US. However, the two times that the US invaded Iraq, the Iraqi army wasn't US trained, nor were they using US equipment. There's something else going on here.

I think that is a slight exaggeration.

The Iraqi people are weak and worthless. I hate to say that, saying such is generally against my nature, but it's true. They have no backbone. They get the government that they deserve.

That's why I don't think the US should rush in there a third time. I really don't mind if those people kill each other or rape each other. It's apparently perfectly normal and natural for them. Their well being isn't really any of my business. I value American lives over any one elses lives.

Interesting. Colin Powell stated that Hussein did a good job at practicing containment of extremism. He also said that he was a factor of relative peace and stability, so if we break it we own it. I think its a very broad brush to use and inaccurate to relegate the lot of Iraqis as weak and worthless.

I don't think they are weak and worthless. I think its more a factor of people who just want to stabilize and live vs a people who want to destroy and take over.

They called them "Militants"??? The BBC just cannot be trusted.

Of course prior to the invasion leftists were saying what a powerful group Saddam's Royal Guard was and the US would have trouble defeating them.Iraqi army is tougher than US believes | World news | The Guardian

Oh for Pete's sake,

The US claims a war against Saddam would be quick. Wrong, says analyst Toby Dodge, the conflict could be long and bloody

To the bolded. So the US says war with Saddam, quick and easy, and an Englishman, Toby Dodge refutes it, and he speaks for all "leftists" !!!!!!!!! What a farce.

No one speaks for all Leftists but the Guardian is a left wing media and those sentiments were often echoed in other leftist media as well. Recall "quagmire" and "another Vietnam"?

I only recall conspiracy peddlers suggesting that Hussein had Baghdad ringed in chemical agents or some such **** that was going to ambush the troops.
