U.S. commandos enter Syria, kill Islamic State commander in charge of oil fields

I don't find it a coincidence that the target has to do with oil fields.

Black market oil is how ISIS makes a good deal of its money. If we want to weaken ISIS, eliminating one of their major sources of revenue is an effective way of doing just that.

Well, it did say shortly before the US Announcement. Do you think Assad has any control of that part of Syria?

Not likely I suppose.

Again, you only demonstrate that you do not understand what a Raid is, nor what a deployment is, nor what "open ended" are in relation to either.

But hey, if you think so, call up their office. See if Van Hollen (for example) believes that the Administration violated the law when it attempted to rescue American hostages last summer.

And you demonstrate that you know how to split hairs, nice for you. Since it serves your purpose you hide behind the administrations language in this instance, but would call it out else where's, were it to help bolster your position. A combat operation inside Syria with boots on the ground is the kind of mission creep that the senators sought to avoid. It's called "creep" for a reason. We've seen such things in several places from Vietnam to the present.

While it's not necessarily a bad thing that he got killed, capturing him would have given us much more intelligence than killing him (even though the SOF got his wife and some computers, which will also be useful). Nevertheless, ISIS has one less official capable of generating revenue, which is bound to hurt it. I don't foresee that the US will conduct raids like this more often - despite how professional American special forces are, there's always the possibility of a soldier getting killed or captured, and ISIS would gleefully execute an American prisoner of war if they got the chance.

Does anyone know what units were involved?

Oh, you mean the Saud and the Sunni, plus the Shia in Iraq? Since they weren't capable of doing it.....are you saying we shouldn't walk the walk when trying to get them to put people in on the ground.

You do know.....that when Leading, sometimes it takes getting out in front. Not sitting in the back behind a desk and telling others what they need to do. When left with no other good choices. Actions speak louder than words.

Now ISIS knows.....we are in their backyard. Just like they are in ours.

We are involved in ISIS whether we agree with it or not. They are reaching out and radicalizing our American losers through technology. We are starting to see domestic terrorism in the US...we have had 2 in Texas, and one busted in Columbus OH, and another in Texas..in less than two weeks. Now that other ME countries have stepped up in the coalition and the Saudis blasting Yemen...I see more US involvement. They cannot handle this on their own and it is now in our backyards. Successful missions like this always strike a cord of pride in Americans...there are no better military than the US.

 It's a raid. Calling it "the administrations' language" is a misnomer. It is what it is.

That's correct - it is called mission creep for a reason. Words mean things. Unfortunately, you continue to demonstrate that you have no idea why it's called mission creep, as you continue to incorrectly apply the term.

Someone getting captured strikes me as a fairly crazy scenario. Killed or wounded, maybe. But, er, I would not want to be the ISIL commander who suddenly discovered I was holding on to one of these guys. That strikes me as sort of like getting handed a grenade with the pin pulled. It's going to kill you, it's just a matter of when.

Does anyone know what units were involved?

NPR radio claimed it was "Delta Force".

Why does the American government just skip to the inevitable and have US commandos based in every major city in the world...just so the POTUS can illegally kill anyone he/she is not particularly ga ga about?

Hey, why stop there? Why not have a couple of commandos in every large town...for the same above reason?

What am I saying? Why doesn't the UN just create a special charter that allows America to bomb/shoot anyone or anything it wants to in any country it feels like? And this charter could allow the POTUS to lock up anyone he/she wants, for as long as he/she wants and without charge?

It would save time as we are heading in that direction anyway.

American foreign policy since 9/11 is little more then cowardice, stupidity and dishonor.

Finally USA learned the ISIS style - Hit And Run

Such military action requires a UN resolution. China and Russia already said no.

So we should just let ISIS continue to murder, rape and destroy while Russia and China play politics? **** that!

If you want to be a slave to China, Russia and/or the UN, go right ahead, son. Meanwhile, those of us who don't have our heads up our asses will be doing what needs to be done!

We were wondering when the "Poor Innocent ISIL Administrator" argument was gonna show up.

Why do you think that a commando on every corner is "inevitable"?

And what about killing this ISIS commander was cowardly, stupid, and dishonorable?

I heard a couple media peeps talk about it was Delta. So I was thinking SFOD-D 1st Operational/Rangers.

Not likely I suppose.

Which means what ground the Islamic State has taken. Makes it a Rogue State. Especially considering Assad cannot exercise any control over that Ground.

Wherein the UN Charter where does a Rogue State have any Rights?

Only if you mock international law, which I see the majority of posters on this are quite willing to do.
Which is precisely what you do in regards to Russian violations of international law regarding Ukraine.

You can't have it both ways and as promised, I'll point out your hypocrisy on this whenever I see it.

And what about killing this ISIS commander was cowardly, stupid, and dishonorable?

Nothing. The ISIS commander was not a civilian under the Laws of War. Even as new details indicate that the raid was a capture raid, the ISIS commander was a legitimate military objective.

Actually, I'm not the only one pointing out "mission creep" concerns.

Rep. Schiff Discusses Concerns over "Mission Creep" in Iraq and Syria on NBC Nightly News
View | Videos | News | U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff of California's 28th District

This is besides the fact that the US sought legitimacy for military operations in Syria by applying for a UNSCR to use force in Syria, AND FAILED. So in typical US form, the UN is being dismissed and US force is being used in Syria anyway.

"The US president has spoken directly about the possibility of strikes by the US armed forces against Isil (IS) positions in Syria without the consent of the legitimate government," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich was quoted as saying.
"This step, in the absence of a UN Security Council decision, would be an act of aggression, a gross violation of international law."

It seems "International Law" only applies to Americans.

Completely backwards. Americans are the only ones that it doesn't apply to.

Syria's sovereign borders have not changed since the civil war has begun.
