Election results: Conservatives win majority - BBC News

It is odd that there has been no mention of this surprise result anywhere here despite the UK being supposedly Americas closest ally. Here in the UK the minutae of US political campaigns is dissected and analysed ad nauseam and usually years before US polling day

Its also quite bizarre when you contrast that with the sound and fury generated on the forum by elections in Israel

Man. I was really hopping George Galloway and the Respect Party were gonna be the king makers.

I saw it on some morning shows. I wish our system was a lot more like the UK's. The two year campaign and over analyzing never gives voters additional information, it's just a propaganda fest and fodder for tabloid style journalism.

Joking aside theres a bit of a constitutional crisis brewing here given the Scots have voted en masse to turn their back on the Union virtually wiping out the Westminster based parties

Fantastic to see the UK go strongly conservative at such a critical time in their great collective histories.

Miliband, Clegg and Farage have ALL resigned.

Well I'd hardly call it 'strongly' as their governing majority is only 12 seats which is the smallest since 1974

They freak out about the Israeli elections because the hatred for Netanyahu. Israel is just another political football in the US...just like gay marriage and abortion. No one REALLY cares.

As for England...I would bet most people in the US dont understand how British government works. They know England still has a Monarchy and it stops there.

And yet the government in power in Westminster is completely unelectable in Scotland. Storm clouds are on the horizon. I'd hate to see another Northern Ireland situation come to pass only this time far larger in scale. The Scots will want their oil back and for economic reasons Westminster can never let them have it :(

You don't know much about UK politics? In this election the Tories pledged to increase NHS funding, offer 30hrs/week for childcare, lend gov't assistance to people to buy homes and increase funding to protect the environment. As a party the Tories still support the welfare state despite their focus on austerity measures, and (and as one example) led the charge to legalize gay marriage.

They're outright progressive compared to you.

Are the storm clouds bigger or smaller than had SNP been in government? They'd certainly have demanded more devolved power during the formation of the government.

Besides you all survived a referendum with Conservatives in Westminster. I'd imagine the Lib Dems had pull, but not THAT much pull.

Which I think goes to show just how far Right American Conservatism is, and how middle-of-the-road American moderate Democrats are.

(though the American Right would like to elucidate a different portrayal)

Yes but given that this is very much major breaking news I'm surprised it has recieved no mention when by contrast every firework that the Palestinians shoot over the wall at Israel gets instant mass posting and multiple threads

Didn't the Scots just vote to remain in the UK?

Things may get interesting if the Tories follow-through on withdrawing from the EU!

Clearly, "conservative" has a different meaning in the UK than it does in America.

But didn't the Scots just have their secession vote and vote to stay in the UK?

Basically the older Brits outvoted the young ones to get themselves more benefits that the next generation is going to have to pay for.

Clearly, "conservative" has a different meaning in the UK than it does in America.

Nobody in modern countries is as staunchly regressive as the American right wing.

Its not more devolved power but control of their own resources the Scots want. Before the referendum the Westminster parties promised the moon to the Scots and then reneged on them once the No vote was secured because they needed the oil to underpin the UK economy. I'd wager if you held that referendum again today the result would be very different. This is why the Westminster parties were wiped out at the polls north of the border

This is not all that surprising. UK has been going too far left for too long and it stands to reason that Conservatives (+24) and the Scottish National Party, arguably somewhat liberal themselves, (+50) made great gains at the expense of Liberal Democrats (-47) and the Labour Party (-26.) At this point based on the numbers Conservatives alone have enough seats to govern. Such a bad loss there are resignations to watch play out, especially seeing as Liberal Democrats are down to all of 8 seats. Such a blow out it tells us the pulse of the UK has spoken enough to want real changes going forward.

Labour were caught in the worst of all worlds losing in England to the right, and in Scotland to the left. The SNP cleverly moved to cover the leftist positions Labour abandoned to pursue English seats. Whether they actually follow through remains to be seen, since their other policies are conservative. (with a small "c")

Actually I am quite aware. My friends across the pond are very pleased with the results! Especially the Scots!
