Bedtime reading could disadvantage other children, academic says

When you demonstrate that you actually understood what I wrote (instead of responding with something I never said or implied), I would try to answer you.

No you wouldn't. At least you never have. And even if you did answer. Someone that thinks others lie is only describing her own MO. I wouldn't expect anything from you.

Giving kids free books solves both problems--no books and parents not willing or able to get books.

Parents start reading to kids **before kids can read.** That's kind of why the parent is doing the reading. It's the early head start and the interaction that confers the advantages.

Then dont ask! LOLOLOL You asked me a question....:doh

Headline: Reading to your children gives them an advantage

My Reaction: THAT'S THE POINT! It just happens to be fun, too.

Of course. Parents start helping kids sound out words, kids start associating words with pictures, they explore new places and ideas, kids start relating it to things they see in 'real life,' parents answer their questions....it's complete bonding experience that helps form a kid's interests and ability to read.

You seem to think if you just give families a bunch of free books, then all of the parents will magically be able to and want to read them to their children. This is a very naive way of thinking. So, no, it doesn't solve both problems. Some parents truly just don't care.

A lot of Americans have serious money problems.

A lot of Americans have serious problems in many areas demonstrated by their lack of parenting skills, lack of concern for their child's education and lack of self-control. Money is one of the LAST reasons why a child comes to school significantly less educated than his peers.

However, ongoing poverty does, I think, contribute to the situation - if more options were available, perhaps the parents would have had a better environment during their own formative period.

Coming to college campus near you....."Family Privilege!"

Families who have had a cycle of poverty for many generations yet are incredibly dedicated to their children's education, teach their children good working habits and help them learn to make good choices are going to have children who are successful in school almost always. It's not poverty that makes people disinterested in helping their children succeed, it's just that most disinterested parents live in poverty.

“I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,” he said.

This is a joke or this guy is one of the most stupid people on the planet... How about I read to my kids and consider that an parenting and if other parents don't want to do it then they can consider themselves disadvantaging their own children because I have nothing to do with it. This is PC gone ****ing insane.

For some... look, books are there for those that want them. Libraries, book sales were they are .50 cents and garage sales are all over the place. Most ignorant and uneducated parents simply will not read to their kids no matter what. I have many students that will recieve an insult or a punch before anything else... they eat candy or chips and drink soda for breakfast every day.

Attention grabbing nonsense. It's sounds like something a conservative would come up with to parody his skewed perception of liberal thinking.

Except that's a bull**** claim. Info on the dude has been posted in this thread. Believe it or not, there are some on the left who are actually nutty all on their own. You'll never believe that though, will you? He must actually be a conservative (and nothing will convince you otherwise). Lol.

you're consistent, I'll give you that

Yep -- and one of the biggest problems with the kids I teach --- lack of sleep.

I'm not sure if you structured your sentence this way on purpose or not.

No damn it. I saw the error after I couldn't fix it. It was a much better joke if I had actually phrased it correctly.

I should take a picture of all the books I've read aloud to my class this year. It's a massive pile.

It's good that they are getting it from somewhere.

My oldest daughter's favorite book was "I'll Love You Forever" and my other two daughters' favorite book was "Are You My Mother?" (about a baby bird who falls out of it's nest and runs around, trying to find his Mother).

Here are a few of the favorites this year:

I let them listen to a few chapters of a Junie B. Jones audiobook. I really don't like those books, but I wanted to expose them to the series in case they want to read them on their own someday.
