U.S. Sending Aircraft Carrier to Help Monitor Iranian Ships

April 20, 2015

The U.S. is sending an aircraft carrier to the Yemeni coast to join a growing fleet of ships keeping watch on an Iranian flotilla that defense officials suspect may be carrying arms for Houthi fighters in Yemen. U.S. military officials said they are monitoring as many as nine Iranian ships suspected of carrying arms bound for Yemen, where Iran’s regional rival Saudi Arabia has been conducting airstrikes against the Houthis for nearly a month. U.S. officials said the arrival of the USS Theodore Roosevelt will raise to 12 the total number of U.S. Navy vessels in the Gulf of Aden, where Saudi and Egyptian ships are also stationed as the situation in Yemen deteriorates.

The US is concerned that Iran may be shipping surface-to-air missiles to the Houthi rebels in Yemen that would endanger Saudi coalition jet fighters carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions. The guided-missile destroyer USS Normandy accompanied the Roosevelt. The USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship carrying 2,000 Marines of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit is also off the coast of Yemen.

The Republicans that want another war should be thrilled with the idea.

Regardless, the deployment of the Roosevelt to Yemen was ordered by a Democrat CIC. It's entirely Obama's initiative as is the mid-flight refueling of coalition combat aircraft.

I wonder, if just being there will be enough. Should it not be, what exactly does one want to do? It is not good precedence to wield your club with a roar and then whimper, when the bad guys don't go away.

That is, what bothers me. It looks and smells a lot like other red lines in the sand and options on tables this administration has bragged with.

Something must be happening for us to send in a battle group from another fleet. The 5th usually patrols that area.

... but to watch Iran, from your own OP. Just saying now that we have a couple of battle groups in on this it seems clear we are gunning to do more than we do now, and that makes Republicans pretty damn happy.

Hopefully you'll be insisting that Obama request a Declaration of War.

If it comes to yet more military action in the region, why would I not?

Looks like Obama didn't like the Iranian's response to his Nuke deal.

Now he's squeezing Iran's ability to arm and supply the rebel forces they are supporting in their proxy war in Yemen.

Could only help, but really, it seems like it's far too little far too late from Obama.

Refueling coalition fighter jets on combat missions and supplying recon data is not just watching. It is participating on the perimeter. Positioning warships to block access to an Iranian convoy is also participating on the perimeter.

Unless I'm mistaken, I have heard neither Democrats nor Republicans complaining of such perimeter participation to date.

Greetings, Erik. :2wave:

Poor little Yemen. All the surrounding countries are swimming in oil, but they got the short end of the stick there, and now they have this? Government collapse, people fleeing for their lives - why Yemen? What do they have that someone wants? Or is it the fact that they have a government that closely resembles a democracy, and that's a no-no over there? Life sure isn't fair sometimes!

Another war?

Seems to me there's been war there for some time, and your peace prize president has already been involved with air strikes.

You know the war monger meme is dead right? The hated and reviled George W. Bush, responsible for everything from 911 to bad weather like Katrina had two wars going on and terrorists were contained. Your guy hasn't advanced a ****ing thing in Afghanistan despite what they tell you, allowed terrorism to grow by premature withdrawal from Iraq, and after Hillary's "regime change" in Libya, you now have ISIS strongholds.

While mr peach prize has been wallowing in bad decisions, like Arab Spring, terrorism has advanced a few hundred per cent.

But keep spewing the White House propaganda, the election is now on.

Bottom line if that GWB turned over a fairly stable Middle East to Obama, who promptly ****ed it up.
