WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Reuters) - The fatal shooting of an employee at a North Carolina community college is being investigated as a possible hate crime, police in Goldsboro said on Tuesday.
Police officials would not say what motive they were considering in the Monday shooting. The mother of alleged shooter Kenneth Morgan Stancil III told a local television station that the victim, Stancil's former boss at the school's print shop, had made unwanted sexual advances toward her son.
"We’re absolutely investigating that possibility," police Sergeant Jeremy Sutton told reporters at a news conference.
Sutton said detectives also were looking into whether Stancil, 20, had any affiliation with white supremacy groups. Stancil is white, as was shooting victim, Ron Lane.

Question, if you are a white power crew 38 bonehead, and a black person "allegedly" makes sexual advances towards your kid, and you kill him, is it automatically a "hate crime"?

It is not automatic. That is why they are investigating, not charging yet. Assuming the victim is black, and was killed by some one prominently displaying white power logos, I would think looking into the possibility of race as a potential motive makes sense.

That of course leaves aside the question of whether hate crime laws are a good thing(I do not think they are), but since such laws are on the books, the police should investigate the possibility in a situation like this.

Not automatically, but it should and is being investigated.

They didn't talk to that, my question is, if you are a white power bonehead and you kill a minority (or a black power bonehead and you kill a different race, etc), is it automatically a hate crime?

1.)The one who had the "sexual advances made on him" was the one who shot the guy
2.)What isnt reported here is that Stancil was recently fired because of absences
3.)If his boss was making "unwanted sexual advances on him"that is no excuse to murder a person. I can think of several things this guy could of gone to.
 
I don't know if it's just me but, even if I were attracted to men, this wouldn't be the one.

Based on the "unwanted sexual advances", they would charge hate crime due sexual orientation. Doubt the same would apply to hetero "unwanted sexual advance" retaliatory murders.

They are currently investigating into if its considered a hate crime. Stancil's mother claimed that Lane made unwanted sexual advances on Stancil. Stancil claimed that Lane was a child molester. A man with neo-Nazi tattoos, killing a gay man after being fired from the job, and the gay man happened to be his boss. Its being investigated. Right thing to do.

So simple membership in a white power group or open white power philosophy is enough to judge anything done by that person as a "hate crime"?

There are basically two choices when you walk up to someone and shoot them in the face;
1. It involved hate
2. It's a contract, nothing personal

no, but it is certainly enough to prompt an investigation of the possibility of a hate crime

no! but if they commit a violent crime against a person who is a member of a group that is often the victim of hate crimes, it warrants an investigation of the possibility of a hate crime. jeez.

That post was responding to a suggestion that the victim was black.

They have to investigate the allegation even if it's unfounded. It seems odd that tat guy worked there for two years, while these advances were made, but only decided to shoot the guy for it after being fired. Maybe tat guy believes that being hit upon up would be an extenuating circumstance.
