Cop shoots suspect, mistakes gun for tazer

You would enjoy living in a totalitarian society. You'd be on the "police state is always right" side and enjoy your glorious superiority.
Never said that. Only that people act civil and follow reasonable laws.

I also read that when the man said he couldn't breathe, one of the deputies said "f your breath." And they also said something in response to "you shot me!" to the effect of "shut up, you ran." That guy had 0 chance of getting out of that situation and was outnumbered 10 to 1. If you can't subdue him, you have no right being out on the streets "fighting crime" (re: murdering suspects). On top of that, he MISTOOK a gun for a tazer? That must be a variety of firearm I'm not familiar with.

Another day, another one of these stories. Police aren't military. Suspects aren't enemy combatants. Can't people at least have the right to not be murdered before due process has occurred?

That is absolute nonsense coming from someone who has no clue about taking down a fighting suspect or law enforcement. It often takes 4 or more people to take 1 guy down. The smaller they are the harder it is due to them being so wiry it's hard to maintain a grip. Now when you add drugs etc into the equation it is much, much worse.

It is an accidental shooting. Clearly no malice. Clearly a mistake. But, that doesn't mean he is without liability. I'm not certain what level of liability, but some liability. Probably manslaughter on some level.

It does point to a problem with having someone that is 73 years old handling a life or death situation. Maybe a discussion about age limits or competency testing that is more rigorous for more experienced officers and volunteers is appropriate.
This.

The reserve officer screwed up. There will be consequences. Should be. The end. All the rest of this is just silliness and posturing.

Is there another thread on this? This is a few days old.

Very sad but...the reserve deputy was 73 yrs old? Yowzaa. There's a reason that people are supposed to...even forced to...retire at a certain age.

Maybe they should reconsider the configuration of tasers to be so similar to guns. Are they all like that? I have seen some that arent but they werent police issue.

Money donors. Make a nice donation to the police department and they thank you with a gun, a badge, and a quick cop training course and voilà!!!!!

I heard on the news last night that he was last a full-time cop in 1963... over 50 years ago! He wasn't a part-time deputy until something 2009, give or take.

My sense is that he was wanting to be a big kid and "play cop", which just reinforces the notion that he shouldn't have been there to begin with.

Its called holding yourself responsible for your decisions. If everyone around you is telling you that your actions / behavior have no concequences then you will find yourself with a generation of people with no common sense. They really believe that they can act however they want wherever they are and its ok because society tells them that its ok to be naieve. There are people out there that are just not good people, and they will take advantage of naieve people like the ones you want to raise.

I don't think that anybody is telling people that negative actions have no consequences. Who are these people who believe that they can act however they want and it's ok? Most criminals are either desperate or have mental illness. You seem to have this hilariously absurd notion that there are liberals going around preaching that we should all do whatever feels good. We're 40 years past "tune in, turn on, drop out," are you?

And I don't know how you have come to the conclusion that I want to raise naive people. I simply think that rapists are always to blame for rape and murderers are always to blame for murder. Blaming the victim is just plain stupid. What this man did warranted an arrest and a prison sentence. They could tackle him and get a little rough if he resists arrest, but they can't shoot him, and just because I think law enforcement officers shouldn't kill people doesn't mean that I am a proponent of crime (WHO IS?!)

So it takes 4 guys to take 1 guy down. He was outnumbered 10 to 1. You just agreed with me and then told me that what I said was nonsense. Are you trying to debate me or yourself?

My bad. I thought you said the exact opposite. Yes the 75 year old should not be a cop, period.

There are a lot old guys in their 70's still believing they are still 30 yrs old. This was truly an accident on his part and nothing remotely like the cop who killed the man in South Carolina.
The person who is at fault is the one who approved of making this senior citizen an armed policeman. Having him out there could actually put the fellow officers in jeopardy of fighting a criminal and at same time looking out for gramps.

Not sure if this was posted yet?

Tulsa Authorities Ordered Robert Bates' Training Record Falsified: Report
The Tulsa County Sheriff's office ordered supervisors to falsify the training record of the reserve deputy who fatally shot a suspect after mistaking his revolver for his Taser, sources told the Tulsa World.
The sheriff's office provided a list of courses that Bates was supposed to have completed as part of his training, but wouldn't provide the names of the supervisors who signed off on them, according to CNN.

"You would think the sheriff's office -- if in fact there has been no pressure applied, no falsification of records -- would be forthcoming with these documents," Ziva Branstetter, a reporter at the Tulsa World, told CNN.

You seem to ignore the fact that officers can only hold, grip, detain, use pressure to fight back.
Where as criminals can kick, punch, head butt, bite, spit and anything else they want.

Hell yeah....

We see it all the time. People running from police, yelling and screaming at police for just doing their jobs. They think that they can push cops around because society has told them that cops wont do anything about it. Its not like the old days where there was some fear of the police. You did not dare piss a police officer off 50 years ago, because you would get your ass kicked. And if you complained about getting your ass kicked, you probably would get your ass kicked again. The problem is, people think they can act however they want because they always have that lawsuit card in their wallet that they will pull anytime an officer forces them to comply.

Lol. Cops can't kick, punch, head but, bite, spit and shoot you in the back if you run away?????

When did society tell us that cops won't do anything? We're just getting started prosecuting bad cops for abusing the power we've vested in them. Hopefully we get it all.

Anecdotes are only an argument when the proposition is "all" or "none". That is NOT the proposition here, so your anecdotes are irrelevant... can you show me that black cops kill white kids at a problematic rate knowing that white cops kill blacks at the rate of 2 or more per week?

No, the bad cops will never get it. Bad cops will be bad cops no matter how many rules you make. All this type of thing does is hurt good cops.

Who wants to make rules. We just want to be diligent at screening the bad ones out.

Turns out, I am related to someone who knows this sheriff, not too many kind words about him. This whole thing is so unacceptable and crazy.

If there is a cover up on his training, the Sheriff is in serious ****.

A cop has been charged with MURDER for that!!!!!!!!

Yea, over charged. No way they will get a conviction on that. Charged, also, only to appease the race baiters and race liars.
Hands up don't shoot. LOL

Yeah, he is toast, one of those good old boys who makes his own rules. And, so is Arpaio, he is trying everything to try to get out of his impending court hearings, by admitting his guilt, and has twice tried to get these hearings cancelled, failing both time. We may finally be rid of this clown in Maricopa county.

It seems like this guy was pay-to-play cop and that some of his credentials may have been forged.
