A geologist in Jerusalem claims to have found “virtually unequivocal evidence” that could reopen the controversy over the final resting place of Jesus Christ.
Dr Aryeh Shimron says he has carried out new tests that suggest it is more likely the Talpiot Tomb, a burial site found in East Jerusalem in 1980, was a family grave for Jesus of Nazareth, his wife Mary Magdalene and his son Judah

snip

That’s significant because the Aramaic inscription on the 10th ossuary reads “James son of Joseph brother of Jesus” – adding weight to the suggestions that the names are those of Jesus Christ and his family.
“The evidence is beyond what I expected,” Dr Shimron said. “I think I’ve got really powerful, virtually unequivocal evidence that the James ossuary spent most of its lifetime, or death time, in the Talpiot Tomb.”
The geochemical tests, carried out under Dr Shimron’s supervision largely by the Israel Antiquities Authority, worked on the basis that the ossuaries in the Talpiot Tomb were all once covered by the same clay with a very distinctive mineral make-up.

Wow! Stunning....If this is reviewed, and verified, what, and how do you see this effecting Christianity? Especially considering the open attack it is under today?

Except Jesus doesn't have a "final resting place"

I do not really see how it could affect Christianity one way or the other.

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

What if this ends up proving he did?

there isn't going to be "proof"

Throughout history there have been hundreds of not thousands of claims from various disciplines, but even if he finds remains, how can he "prove" they were those of the Messiah? DNA?

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

First , its not " unequivacle " evidence to make their assertion based on how common or uncommon those names were 2000 years ago.

Thats is essentially all they have and all they will ever have

They will never have unequivocal evidence and they won't shake the faith of Christians who never needed physical proof to begin with.

Greetings, F&L. :2wave:

It's not on this earth, so I was taught in Sunday School. He left this for something far better, but look at what he had to go through to attain it! How many "Gods" that were worshipped in ancient Rome or Egypt or anywhere else proved their love by dying for their worshipers? None immediately come to mind.

I came to the cross late in life, I was far from indoctrinated...more like dragged kicking and screaming. I have shared my story and often the reaction is "he really wanted you..."

My theological training has all be self-directed, or rather at His hand. So my perspective is termed "fresh" in theological circles.

The longer I walk with this Jewish Carpenter the more how I see His whole point of being here has been grossly mis-understood. He gave no law but one, the "mandatum magnum" ..."love one another".

In some Christian faiths, women are still second class, they can't even preach based on one line in a letter from Paul. And yet we have the acts of Jesus, he "had to cross the Jordan" and enter Samaria [who were despised by Jews].....and what did he do?

He met and spoke with a woman in the middle of the day as an equal. That alone was viewed as a "sin' in some sects of His faith and certainly a gross social insult, as men did not lower themselves to speak to women in public save to give them orders.

And what does Jesus do with this prostitute who has "five husbands"? at the end of his little talk, he sends he away with the words "now, go, and tell them I have come."

In other words, go preach of me to Samaria. He broke every social tenet to speak to a woman, broke more as she was morally judged, and then gives her the responsibility of delivery His message accurately.

That is not keeping women in their place, and it is not judging on moral grounds, a woman hooker as preacher is what HE is all about

There is a book called "The Ragamuffin Gospels"....worth reading

There is no attack on Christianity, especially in the West. To say so is delusional.

Proof that he was human and not Divine? Like many thought back then too...

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

Of course Christianity is under attack. :eyeroll:

Please prove He wasn't. It's the atheists quest is it not? Not satisfied to believe something, but militant in trying to convince others there is no God.

I don't care if you don't believe, what drives such hate that you have to force others not to believe.

And many, more than any other faith contend He still is.

Reply if you like, I won't respond....this is very boring and childish.

I was just answering your question... It might be proof to some people if there is evidence that jesus' body resides there... doesn't mean it's enough proof to you. it might be enough for others... and something at least worth considering if someone wants to honestly record history without bias.
if there is a difference in historic evidence than from the bible, that's worth looking into.

Without the resurrection then Christianity really doesnt have a leg to stand on. But then again Jesus and James were common names back then so it could be anyone even if the tomb is verified. The best way to prove Christianity is to find Lazarus.

How could it prove it? The inscription proves nothing. Calling it "virtually unequivocal evidence" is hyperbole at best.

If we don't all live by their values, we're attacking them. Don't you get it?

The key word in this sentence is if.

If your aunt was a man then s/he would be your auncle, eh? :lamo

Well, since Jesus wasn't buried in a family tomb, this is pretty much debunked right off the bat...

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

According to The Gospel of Thomas, found in a jar at the Nag Hammadi, Jesus had a twin brother, also named Thomas. Perhaps they found Jesus' twin?

I tend to agree Shrub....I neither said it was true, or not true, just posing a question. Maybe it was not the most articulate question, but I am no scholar either so....I just find it fascinating that things so old are uncovered even today....And further how fragile we all are to entertain such questions to our faith...With the exception of some ofcourse.

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

Except Jesus doesn't have a "final resting place"
Nor does He have a wife and son

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

Oh, there is no doubt that a man name Jesus once existed. There is overwhelming documentation of where he came from, and the lineage is surprisingly detailed for its time. The true question, however, is "is he the Son of God?" I can't answer that.

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

I do not really see how it could affect Christianity one way or the other.

That figures.

Re: The lost tomb of Jesus? Scientist claims he has 'virtually unequivocal evidence'

A discription that says Jesus of Nazareth, Mary Magdelene, and Judah, and it's coincidently a different Jesus of Nazareth, Mary Magdelene and Judah?
