Arkansas passes its own religious freedom bill despite uproar in Indiana

The Republican majority legislative houses of Arkansas have sent HB1228 (RFRA) to the desk of Republican governor Asa Hutchinson who says he will sign the legislation into law. This legislation is similar to, and even broader than, a similar law recently passed in Indiana. From what I understand, only the Arkansas state legislature can write Arkansas nondiscriminatory law (no cities, towns, etc), and they have refused to include the LGBT community as a protected civil rights class. Whats more, the state legislature will go into recess in a day or two. In Arkansas, the state legislators tackle financial matters in one session, and other matters in the next legislative session. This means that the next legislative session that could address HB1228 won't convene until after the up-next financial session has concluded. Basically, two years from now.

Good on Arkansas for not bowing to screaming hyperbole.

I was born and raised in Arkansas. What has always turned me off of conservatives is that they consistently blow all their political capital on stupid culture wars that they invariably are going to lose at some point anyway instead of actually addressing real problems that real people face. Arkansas is consistently one of the poorest and some years the poorest state in the nation. There are parts of Arkansas, particularly the delta that looks like the third world.

However, its also easily one of the prettiest states in the country, with millions of acres of national forests, wilderness, world class rock climbing, world class mountain biking, world class fishing and has the potential of being an outdoors mecca. So you would think the focus there would be on trying to become the next Boulder or Bend and attract active and athletic people from all over to come to the state to live, work, train, and spend their money. But no, they got to do everything they can to keep a it mecca for poor, ignorant, and bigoted fundamentalists instead.

Nailed it!

I would agree, except you can rest assured that tax-exempt status for religious institutions will be the next battle.

As the liberal / progressive / Democratic assault on any and all Christian religions (oh Muslims et. al. are all just fine) continues.

The thought struck me that liberals / progressives / Democrats would much rather have a Big Government (1984!) replace / supplant any religious institutions, you know, as the moral (amoral?) compass for the 'little' people.

Basically, the last gasp of a dying generation of religious bigots trying to ram through everything while they still have a slim majority in some states.

But, as they have seen from the public outrage and the responsible business community....these kinds of bills will not be tolerated.

Why is "big govt." so obsessed with religion that they are passing laws allowing discrimination in its name?

Government is agnostic, as it should be. Legislators, well that's a bit different, so I don't think your characterization really works.

Legislators are the living tree of the government. What you're saying makes no sense.

Like I said in the other thread, the secular progressives along with a completely myopic MSM are using the gay rights movement as cover. This is ALL about moving religious America back into the church and ONLY the church, and even there it's not safe for them. If they had it all there way, they'd abolish religion completely, and all you people are not seeing this for what it is. To the gay left, You're the useful idiots, just like black American's, OWS are the useful idiots for the Democratic party. It's the same thing.. Sure they have the same goals perhaps, BUT stopping discrimination isn't where the ACLU's of the world, and Progressives want it to stop. Nope.. They want even less religion and places to practice it. THAT is their goal!

Like I said in the other thread, the rightwing bigots along with a completely myopic GOP are using the Bible as cover. This is ALL about moving religious America back into the govt. If they had it all there way, they'd abolish religion completely except their own, and all you people are not seeing this for what it is. To the bigoted GOP, You're the useful idiots, just like KKK were the useful idiots for them. It's the same thing.. Sure they have the same goals perhaps, BUT allowing discrimination isn't where the xtian's of the world, and wingnuts want it to stop. Nope.. They want even more religion in the govt. THAT is their goal!

The Indiana legislature has reportedly reached a consensus on amending the state's RFRA law and it will be reviewed by Gov. Pence today before a vote transpires. It is a compromise that will dispel some of the harsher criticisms of the law, but a compromise in which neither liberals nor conservatives will be totally happy. According to insiders, the compromise legislation specifies that the new religious freedom law cannot be used as a legal defense to discriminate against patrons based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In Arkansas, Gov. Hutchinson asked for the state's RFRA law to be recalled and amended. By a 26-6 vote, the state Senate on Wednesday approved a bill that more closely resembles the federal RFRA law. The state House is scheduled to debate and vote on the amended measure today. It is felt that forming a legislative consensus in Arkansas will be more difficult than in Indiana.

Arkansas senator Bart Hester, who presented the original bill in his chamber told reporters: "The Arkansas RFRA did not mirror the federal RFRA law. That was intentional."

This is all a revived and watered down version of 'no blacks allowed' in the old segregated South.

That's where all this can go in the 'new' 21st' century.

Simply amazing, isn't it.

You do realize there are tons of gay christians right? How can they be using the gay supporters to accomplish an end to religion, when it's not even what they want?

I think the real issue here is conflating marriage and other basic rights with religion, and homosexuality with anti religion. Anti discrimination laws really have nothing to do with religion, but with protecting minorities. That is the underlying principle. Your theory of some broader desire to end religion is rather pointless, when there is still discrimination.

Let me tell you above all, the church pursuing these laws only drives people *away* from religion. It is in the church's best long-term interest to stop oppressing lgbt. The church is doing this to itself, as always
