Nigeria election: Muhammadu Buhari set for victory - BBC News

Opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari is on the verge of a historic victory over Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, with most votes counted.

Gen Buhari, a former military ruler, is ahead by almost three million votes, with results still to come from just three states.

Analysts say it is hard to see how Mr Jonathan can overcome this lead.

The opposition has never won a presidential election in Nigeria, Africa's most populous state.

This is more significant than most people realize.

The first multi-party, peaceful handover of power to occur in Nigerias history.

In the coming decades Nigeria will be one of the most populous countries in the world, it's economy already sits comfortably among the top 30 in the world and continues to grow.

If the government of Nigeria can continue along the road of stability despite extreme issues with corruption which hopefully it will outgrow as the country becomes more affluent it will be a major power in decades to come and will lead Africa into a new stage of development and prosperity.

But there is a long road to that day, we're nowhere close.
 
Really!? Wow.

I would add that Buhari has already lead Nigeria for a short period ... He took power after a coup in the 1980s.

I remain instinctively jaundiced - let's wait until the "final counting" is done. And then let's make sure that all of Jonathan's buddies who are now - conveniently - the heads of the military agree that he "lost".


But yes, if Buhari takes over, well :shrug: people will have deliberately elected a former autocratic dictator. But it will be good to see Jonathan go, and be replaced by a Muslim, who will be better situated to fight the counter-BH effort in the North.

....assuming he can also keep MEND from standing back up.

Also, Buhari is from northern Nigeria.

(Nigeria is split in two: A more populous, but poorer and Islamic north and a richer, urban Christian south. The government has always pretty blatantly favored the south at the expense of the north.)

One of the biggest issues however is that their GDP per capita is in the gutters.

Total GDP is not the end all be all. We see this in China where signs of unrest are beginning to occur again around 3 decades after Tiananmen Square.
