The backlash to Indiana's new religious freedom law grew Monday, even as state lawmakers move to clarify the legislation, with Wash. Gov. Jay Inslee and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray banning government-funded travel to Indiana.

Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religious freedom' law | Fox News

It is not a fight for freedom anymore, it is a witch hunt! If Jay Inslee and Ed Murray believe undermining Indiana's tourism industry is a good way to make local inhabitants more tolerant I've got bad news for them. They can disagree with Indiana's decision but they have no moral authority to "impose embargo" on these people.

RFRA was adopted by the legally elected representative of people of Indiana. It is democracy in action. If you want to live in a liberal utopia get out of America and let us make our choice.

I want to know what non essential travel they were conducting to Indiana anyway

Presumably the Coaches of Washington and Washington St will not be at the Final Four this weekend.

Re: Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religiou

1. This is meaningless and idiotic.

2. But it is useful in that it highlights who, in our grand ole republic, is idiotic and prone to perform meaningless gestures.

I wonder when they will ban travel to the other two dozen or so states who have the same laws, or the rest of the US, for that matter.

Re: Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religiou

I think i'm seeing a pattern of states too far away to even conceivably have official travel to indiana

Which is undoubtedly due to the entire midwest and south being FUBAR

Yeah, makes me wonder why we aren't hosting conventions in seattle instead of going to them in Indy, I mean it's not like we squandered.... I mean invested taxpayer money while simultaniously jacking up traffic on I-5 permanently by building that giant convention center over the freeway in downtown or anything, and it sits empty half the year.... If inslee and Murray really wanted to send a message they'd offer to host every upcoming Indy convention

what convention would that be, the freaking basketball tournament for 19 year olds?

the west coast has some issues re: national events with this thing called a time zone. But it's also far more palatable to major business and the educated in general than the dying midwest, and these regressive and oppressive laws aren't going to help

You live in Seattle. Why are your tax dollars paying for city officials' non-essential travel to Indiana anyway?

Re: Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religiou

Is the Seattle Governor going to institute a official travel ban to Illinois ?

They have amd have had a similar law for some time.

19 States have similar Religious Freedom laws, including Illinois.

Similar, but not the same.

That may be true, but a lot of people in Indiana do not support the RFRA. I for one, am ashamed of my state and my legislators. If it takes the actions of other states to force the IN General Assembly to reconsider, I wont be complaining one bit.

I am afraid you - as well as other citizens - will suffer from economic counteractions without any particular result. Anyway a swelling conflict between the states is not we are looking for.

I love it when people cry and whine when they are held accountable for their actions. Indiana and anyone else who tries to discriminate behind the shield of religion will find out just how expensive Bigotry is in America today.

Of course not. But this is the way that things are supposed to work: outside parties and private enterprises protesting in their own ways to force change. The economic repercussions will hopefully be minimal and will eventually work themselves out. The Gov. and legislators are already considering a clarification to the law, which is a step in the right direction

How many of those nineteen states have identical laws?

Re: Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religiou

It looks as though the media and social focus on Indiana is having an effect.

Gov. Pence proposes 'fix' to religious freedom law
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence aggressively defended Indiana's religious freedom law Tuesday but said he wants a bill on his desk by week's end "making it clear the law does not allow businesses the right to deny services to anyone."

"This law does not give anyone the right to discriminate," Pence said at a news conference. "But I can appreciate that that has become the perception."

Not especially surprising is where Pence confirms everyone's suspicions that he is in fact a total asshole:

He blamed "some on the left and, frankly, some in the national media" with forcing the state to consider clarifying the law.

You'll notice that none of this, including Portland's mayor doing the same thing, is actually done by representatives of the people of those states. Just a few asshat liberal politicians making moves on their own without going through the people.

Re: Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religiou

Discriminating behind the shield of religion? Maybe, but the reason is somewhere deeper in mayors papers, don't believe this. Everything our officials do usually have the true meaning for their business first.

Re: Washington gov, Seattle mayor ban official travel to Indiana in wake of 'religiou

This kind of thing is the marketplace at work in a way. The problem is that it punishes Hoosiers for the actions of the state government. Indiana is not going to become a blue state any time soon.

This mayor may have his ideas about the religious freedom law but banning official travel is going too far IMHO.
