Out of Yemen, U.S. is Hobbled in Terror Fight

Re: U.S. Flees Yemen

Yemen has been a mess for some time and this has nothing to do with Obama or what's going on with ISIS elsewhere. It'll be interesting to see what the Saudis do about this. THAT should be our focus.

The Saud built a fence across their Border. Complete with sensors and Towers. I think they were worried about the 1/3rd part of Yemen that's Shia. Probably think that the Sunni in Yemen aren't capable of maintaining control. Or able to control the Shia.

Heya ILOR :2wave: Well didn't BO and his Team give Selah complete 100% Immunity?

This is what Obama said just a few months ago.

"This counterterrorism campaign will be waged through a steady, relentless effort to take out [the Islamic State] wherever they exist, using our air power and our support for partner forces on the ground. This strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while supporting partners on the front lines, is one that we have successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years"

It's not that Obama is just the most stupid president in US History, he is quite likely the stupidest leader of any democracy in world history. This man has blood all over his hands.

How is this Obama's fault? Yemen has collapsed because of a decade-long insurgency by the Houthis that's been backed by Iran. The campaign to prevent al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula from posing any major terrorist threat has been successful because of the drone program; the Houthis are a separate issue entirely that should really be handled by Saudi Arabia.

The Yemini parliament granted him immunity.

Yeah, that was afterwards. ;)

Yemen's new national unity government, comprised of an equal number of opposition and loyalist ministers, approved the law in accordance with the transfer agreement that Saleh signed in neighboring Saudi Arabia late last year.

The agreement, brokered by Yemen's powerful Arab neighbors and backed by the United States, grants Saleh immunity in exchange for him hand handing over powers to his deputy. Saleh is scheduled to hand over the presidency to his vice president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, on Feb. 21.....snip~

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Do you think that the Saudis will do anything, or should do anything if it gets out of control?

Heya MadLib. :2wave: Where did Ansar al Sharia begin again?

Heya MadLib. :2wave: Where did Ansar al Sharia begin again?

IIRC, the Libyan and Yemeni Ansar al-Sharias are two distinct groups.

Yep Jet, :2wave: and the Saud built a fence along the Iraqi border as well. We had a thread up on it in the ME Forum.

Welcome to Fortress Saudi Arabia (via the Telegraph):

It is not the only fence with which Saudi Arabia has chosen to surround itself. Despite the difficulty of access to westerners, the country is relatively open to fellow Muslim nations, particularly during the Haj season when pilgrims from across the world come to Mecca and Medina. However, that is changing in changing times.

It has also created a physical barrier along parts of the even longer, 1,000-mile border with Yemen to the south......snip~

No, it is not Obama's fault The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 is Obama's fault, so let's keep things correct.

I think that both the Iraqi invasion and the Arab Spring are responsible. What do you think that the Saudis should do? And in the end, do you think that the Saudis might annex Yemen as a state?

So, it kinda sounds to me like that's where the right has been getting the big idea of a fence on our southern border...

BTW, what about the Saudis?

Could split as it was before.

Re: U.S. Flees Yemen

So we should of sent more troops to Yemen as the country falls apart into a multi-sided civil war?
What makes you think the chaos would have been there if troops had remained? The fact is that all of this happened after Obama withdrew.

Re: U.S. Flees Yemen

IIRC, the Libyan and Yemeni Ansar al-Sharias are two distinct groups.

Ansar al Sharia started in Yemen and has spread to Libya. IIRC according to the State Dept? Well we now know they operate inside Libya.

State Department: Ansar al Sharia an alias for AQAP.....

Although the State Department’s statement focuses solely on Ansar al Sharia in Yemen, other Ansar al Sharia-branded organizations have emerged elsewhere since the Arab Spring, including Tunisia and Libya. Ansar al Sharia Tunisia is headed by Seifallah ben Hassine, otherwise known as Abu Iyad al Tunisi. Hassine, a longtime al Qaeda ally, orchestrated the Sept. 14 assault on the US embassy in Tunis.

The State Department says that Ansar al Sharia in Yemen is a “separate entity from Ansar al Sharia in Libya.” According to a report published by the federal research division of the Library of Congress in August, one of these Ansar al Sharia groups “has increasingly embodied al Qaeda’s presence in Libya, as indicated by its active social-media propaganda, extremist discourse, and hatred of the West, especially the United States.”

That report, titled “Al Qaeda in Libya: A Profile,” was produced under an agreement with the Defense Department’s Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO). The report’s authors document al Qaeda’s extensive presence in Libya, finding that al Qaeda’s senior leadership in Pakistan has dispatched operatives to the North African country to establish a clandestine terrorist network there. The Defense Department’s CTTSO concluded that al Qaeda is on the verge of a fully operational network inside Libya, and Ansar al Sharia is one of the brands employed by al Qaeda operatives.....snip~

If you've been propping them up for decades, yes. If they're your dictators, yes.

Or you ensure that you're part of the uprising and part of what results.

You don't just sit back preparing your March Madness brackets and practicing your putting.

No military presence in the Middle East and there is chaos and mass killings. Recall who said that Iraq was "stable"? FLASHBACK

Do you genuinely not know what he said about Yemen? Four months ago, Obama called Yemen’s war on terror a success. Now the Yemeni government may fall. - The Washington Post

Re: U.S. Flees Yemen

How many US Drone Strikes made enemies for the West and Western Oil companies?

"Radaa, Yemen - Mousid al-Taysi was travelling in a wedding convoy celebrating a cousin's marriage when a missile slammed down from the sky. All he remembers are bright red-and-orange colours, then the grisly sight of a dozen burned bodies and the cries of others wounded around him.

Mousid survived the December 12 attack in Yemen's central al-Baydah province, apparently launched by an American drone, but his physical and psychological recovery process is just beginning. If confirmed, it would be the deadliest drone attack in the country in more than a year.

Mousid told Al Jazeera he had no idea why his family members were blown to pieces in Radaa district. Some have suggested the convoy may have been mistaken for fighters belonging to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP"

"Flees?" LOL! That's leading a roundhouse punch, innit?

The best action for the US and the West to take is to get the **** out of the region. Adios! Bye, bye! Let that part of the world take care of itself. Or if you are that committed, you go! And send your children or grandchildren to go. And send all the money you can to army of your choice, preferably the army in which you and your children or grandchildren will be serving. I have absolutely no doubt that if you are just itching to get some you and your loved ones can be over there killing people in no time. Walk the talk.

Re: U.S. Flees Yemen

First, Iraq was going to be one of the great success stories of the Obama Administration: then Libya was the beginning of the Obama Doctrine; and now Yemen is a shining example of success that would be used in combat against ISIS.

Fail X3

The fail never ends.

ISIS has trounced Obama, the Yemenese have done it, Al Quaeda has done it, Libya has laughed at his ineptitude, and even Nehatanyu has beaten Obama's best shot.

Now all these losses, and zero wins, is somehow a good thing? You reckon the US will not be next? Do you really think you can run and hide forever?

I think you had better get your butt and your family's butt over there and kill people. You are wasting time in panic mode. :scared:

Lead the way. Quit screaming for everyone else to do it for you. Get moving. Take some other Canadians with you.

What about Western negotiations with Iran for Nuclear progress?

If Iran delays the bomb, is the West offering to give Northern Yemen and Eastern Iraq to Iran? What is so hard about re-drawing a few lines on the World map?

"BEIRUT: With Iran moving closer to a deal with world powers to constrain its nuclear program in return for an end to sanctions, Arab analysts and leaders are focused more on how Tehran is working unconstrained to tighten its grip on Arab states, from Iraq to Lebanon, and Syria to Yemen.

The man behind what some see as an attempt to create a new Persian and Shiite “empire” on Arab land is Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Al-Quds brigade of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Since he emerged from the shadows last autumn, Soleimani seems to be omnipresent on the battlefields of the Middle East.

Photos of Soleimani, 60, almost an invisible man until the Sunni jihadis of ISIS overran cities in northern and central Iraq last year, are now everywhere."
