"This type of cowardly and hateful act will not be tolerated in this city," City Manager Marc Ott said.

Notice how the story, and the city manager, automatically make the subtle assumption that this was the action of white supremacists.

It's quite possible - perhaps even more likely - that this was done by people who want to make a claim that the City of Austin caters to white people only. It's a common tactic to pose as what you despise in order to create a false image and make it look bad.

The bias, lack of creativity, and laziness of the media is dumbfounding.

Not sure I read it the same way. A business putting such a sticker on their own business would not be cowardly, so the implication is that someone who put the sticker up to make the business look bad is actually the party being cowardly.

gentrification

This was either "hipster irony" about the gentrification of that neighborhood or a protest against that gentrification.

The laziness of politicians is dumbfounding. Those stickers are clearly not the result of a white supremacist campaign. Austin is one of the most gentrified cities in the country; that should be considered a victory of sorts for your run-of-the-mill supremacist - everything catering to white people. These sticker are obviously a social statement on the lack of diversity present in Austin.

The mayor who called this out? Either too lazy to actually think about the problem for a minute, or too lazy to reach beyond the race card. Either way, this shows incompetence.

Reading the article, while not much information is given, makes me wonder who is behind this campaign, and for what purpose.

Yep that is pretty much probably it.

I pretty much spent all summer in Austin, fun town.

This sounds a lot like Spike Lee and his recent bleatings about areas of New York City being reclaimed, renovated and upscaled, ostensibly removing the ability of blacks to remain as residents of the areas. Seems he'd much rather have blacks populate slums in perpetuity, or perhaps parts of New York City turn into Detroit rather than have the city he claims to love rejuvenate.

Sounds like the same thing going on in Austin.

I've live in the Austin area for 25 years. Been there hundred, if not thousand of times. Before retired I commuted to downtown Austin for 10 years. Been to a lot of places in Austin. Gone to many SXSW events...and several more that Austin put's on every year.

Austin has a primarily black college, several other colleges and the University of Texas, which has over 50,000 students, many of which or black. In total there's probably over 150,000 students in Austin...with a significant number of black students.

I've NEVER seen any business around Austin turn away blacks. I've never seen such signs...but that doesn't mean that they don't exist. And I'm not personally denying their existence.

If these signs exist, then I hope that those business will be punished to the fullest extent of the laws (state and federal).

Do you have evidence that this was done by provocateurs? And why is it that you only see the work of provocateurs when it's behavior that exposes the things you secretly support.

The businesses did not put up the sign, it was an act of vandalism by unknown vandals.

The things I secretly support.......yeah, you know me. That would get your ass kicked in person, buddy.

What makes you think it's the work of a secret racist organization with a budget for high end decals?

Calling others racist, cheapens the very real issue of racism, why do you feel the need to use the black man as a bat for your politics?

The signs appeared on stores run by people of color. It only makes sense that they were put on the stores without permission by someone with an ax to grind. And refusing to serve people of color is illegal. I'd say it's not a secret that a person who actually thinks businesses would post such a thing hates whites.

Lol. I guess you haven't support for your conspiracy.

The implication is that black people posted the stickers to provoke trouble. Do you see it differently?

I mean if it wasn't actually put up by the business it's pretty clear that it wasn't actually the act of a white supremacy group.

Rather, a statement about gentrification. Which is a worthy topic of discussion, but this is a silly way to go about it.

I don't think anyone implied it was black people doing it. I'd actually say white hipsters are more likely.

That's not that obvious. Just as black Americans could have committed the provocation, to stir trouble, so could whites. It's interesting that these are what appear to be to me anyway, professionally produced stickers, maybe not. If they were, it should be fairly easy to find out what printers made them. And if so, what printer would accept such an order, lol.

Probably just someone trolling the city. Successfully, I might add.

no, they appeared on certain targeted businesses that seemed to attract the gentrified crowd. The stickers were a protest of that gentrification.
