US to keep more troops in Afghanistan than planned, officials say | Fox News

The Obama administration is reversing its plans to cut the amount of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to 5,500 by the end of the year, appeasing military leaders who want to keep more troops into 2016, U.S. officials say.

Officials have said the administration is poised to slow the withdrawal of forces and probably will allow most of the 9,800 American troops to remain in the embattled country, although no final decision on numbers has been made yet. There have also been discussions to keep counterterrorism troops into 2015 and keep some in the country or be near Afghanistan in 2016.

There are about 2,000 U.S. troops conducting counterterrorism missions and military leaders have argued that they will need to continue their efforts to pursue remnants of Al Qeada and to monitor the Islamic State. Officials expected President Obama to use a Washington visit by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani this month as the time to announce his decision on a new withdrawal timeline.
This is an admission that we should have stayed. Fulfilling campaign promises is honorable, but not when circumstances make it unreasonable. Obama should have just told the American people that.

Of course, the country still needed a force stationed there. But it should not have been US. That is where Obama fell down. He has not brought in the international community to do the lifting. This has eluded him world wide and is probably his larges failure.

Maybe he shouldn't have run around apologizing for us, but instead stood up for us. People lose respect for you when you don't stand up for your own country. I don't think any of that brought the international community closer to us.

Yes. I am afraid he gets a 'flunked' on that.

I will be go to hell, even Obama can learn from his biggest screw-up in the history of the fight against terrorism,.....ie taking the troops out of Iraq purely for the sakes of fulfilling a campaign promise and sucking up to the looney left.

It is no longer politically expedient for Obama to say that he is ending the fighting in Afghanistan so he won't and likely he never intended to

He has alienated the allies who were there. And his failures in other foreign policy matters has undermined confidence. They take a look at Iraq and see an early pull out with horrific consequences, the result of 'regime change" in Libya and back away.

They see the personal attacks on Netanyahu and the hysterical re-action from White House aides and say "good luck, you're on your own."

Canada took the 'heavy lifting' in Kandahar....we lost more soldiers per capita than anyone else. And we were re-paid with games and lies on the Keystone pipeline, foot dragging on renegotiating mutual treaties and public slagging by Barrack "enemies" Obama.

He is still a rookie with his head in community organizing and the more senior and experienced world leaders, which is all of them, have stood down....a self centered egotist who will throw anyone under a bus is not the kind of "friend" in which you place any trust.

Why should anyone buddy up with a failure and a prick like Obama?
