they were invented to cause a chemical reaction resulting in channeling energy to launch a ballistic projectile at speeds over a distance, to do whatever the user wants, which can include killing among other things, but obviously not all the time.

Obviously, given his heinous actions, Adam Lanza was mentally ill. But you are practicing psychiatry without a license and sitting in judgment. None of Lanza's issues--autism, OCD, and anxiety--are associated with violence, and nobody realized that he was capable of what he ultimately did.

30 years ago this night, I was mugged unsuccessfully by two "urban utes" They were unsuccessful because I had a loaded legally carried 9mm S&W auto and when it all was over, I had a broken nose, one mugger had a 1150 FPS colonoscopy and the other one, a seriously crap stained pair of shorts and blue jeans. I Kept my mouth shut on the advice of counsel and the Chief of Police who was happy I had almost wasted a scum bag that a bleeding heart judge had seen fit to release after this same scumbag had put a guard into a hospital by hitting him over the head during a B&E at a local power plant. but on the news, some aging 60's granola bar hippy chick whined that a "rich white" guy should not shoot a "poor black boy" who merely was looking for some money that an unjust society had deprived blacks of. My attorney wryly noted how she would feel if the same "poor black boy" assaulted her looking for some sex with a white woman that a racist society labeled "taboo". Needless to say, counsel's question did not elicit a cognizable answer but that is the sort of idiocy we get from the anti self defense lefties.

you are intentionally ignoring the legal use of a weapon and mixing it with illegal use

Thirty years ago, I wasn't interested in learning to use a gun. I didn't like them and felt uncomfortable even having them around. But one night while we were sleeping our house was broken into and they stole some things including my purse. Hubby's job often called him out of town. He insisted I learn to shoot a gun because he worried when I was home alone. He first started with taking me skeet shooting with a Winchester rifle. After a day of that I had such a bruised shoulder/chest I had to see a doctor. Obviously I wasn't doing things correctly. After learning to use the rifle then he took me to the gun range for target practice. Do you remember those targets of the full person with 4 chambers of the heart? That's what he would bring along for me to practice. He would bring a couple of handguns and tell me to aim at the heart. I'd hit a foot, arm, and very seldom came close to the heart. I sucked. But he could shoot off 4 rounds and hit all 4 chambers and when he wanted to show off would use playing cards for targets. Anyway, I learned to load and shoot a gun and would use it without second guessing if I needed to.

I think that might have been a Winchester shot gun, if you mean skeet as in 6" round black and white disks flying through the air.
