Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle Obama

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

Doh, let's state the obvious. What's free speech have to do with Charlie?

Everything. The supposed catalyst behind the CH attacks were the fact that their free speech rights allowed them to do as they please; including insulting Mohammad.

It was taken as a symbol of free speech. It's a shame you don't understand the symbolism. The White House calling a TV station to fire and shut down someone who said something they find offensive. You don't think that's a little heavy handed, a little government enforcement through intimidation?

CJ, this is all based on the statements of the person fired and nothing else. Hence why he said the admission was verbal. You want to take it as gospel even though there is no reason to believe that a call was even made by the WH. Hell, what he said alone is enough to fire anyone else. If I said gays looked like monkeys at my job, I'd be fired immediately. You can take ANY group of people and generally insulting anyone based on such an insult would get you fired. Your insistence that this is all the fault of the WH is absurd. His statements were reprehensible, he was fired as a result because keeping him on would have been supportive of his views. That's not a violation of freedom of speech or any sort of intimidation. You have EVERY right to your words, you also have to deal with the legal consequences of uttering them. This was a legal consequence. If you don't like it? Don't work for Univision; end of story.

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

It only matters if that person is black and the First Lady of America to those who are politically correct and who abhor any negativity directed at those they support.

He said she looked like she should be a member of the cast of Planet of the Apes. Perhaps he thought she looked like Charlton Heston - would that be okay?

Right. Heston. I'm sure that was the reference.

Yeah, I don't get it. Humans share a common ancestor in apes, so I don't understand how only monkeys is a racist slam on blacks. Monkeys come in all shapes and colors.

I have dark skin, but I'm not black, so does that mean its racist if someone calls me a monkey?

Are you really unfamiliar with the history of comparing black people to monkeys or are you just pretending to be?

I don't take anyone in such circumstances at their word, considering the times. However, he has made the statement, he has said someone at Univision told him so and I have not heard either Univision or the White House dispute that claim. If you have, please direct me to it.

In the absence of information to the contrary, I'm free to opine that I think the White House calling a TV station in order to have someone fired over something the White House found offensive is very troubling. If you don't, that's fine. Doesn't matter if he may have been fired anyway. If the White House is so thin skinned and petty that they'd use their great powers of intimidation, that's very telling in and of itself.

Right. Heston. I'm sure that was the reference.

I'm not consumed by race. I don't look at people and see the colour of their skin first and consider all references to them as reflective of their skin colour. Clearly, many in America do just that. It's a pity.

And the only proof he has is: "Because I said so!". Univision and the WH not disputing it is irrelevant. If you make a claim, it's not proven true if nobody else challenges it. It's proven true if you have the evidence to back it up. He doesn't. Until he does, there's nothing for anybody to acknowledge. So where is the evidence? :)

Right. Heston. I'm sure that was the reference.

Right wingers are obviously unfamiliar with the history of comparing black people to monkeys

I was simply commenting on the "evidence" presented in this thread by the author of the OP who followed up with reference to the White House connection. I will note that I just did some further checking on my own and the White House is not commenting, the First Lady's office is not commenting, but CBS reports that Univision is disputing the claim and saying that they contacted the First Lady's office, not the other way around. I'll accept that version until proven otherwise.

Lmao, you don't have to accept anything either way. This is a disgruntled employee saying something and then expecting others to prove him wrong when he's offered no proof of his own. There is no story here other than: "Guy said something racist, guy got fired for it, guy ranted that it was Obama's fault." Be honest with yourself and ask whether ANYBODY on live television would have held on to their jobs after calling ANY first lady a monkey. The truth is that they wouldn't. Hell, unless you worked somewhere full of racists, there is no way calling a black woman a monkey as a joke wouldn't have gotten them fired.

Well... maybe at Ferguson PD they would have held on to their jobs.

Do you actually know what happened here?

A makeup artist transformed himself into several famous females. The transformation pictures were put up on a screen showing the makeup artist before and after shots. Michelle Obama's picture was never used or shown.

This "fashionista" commented, "well you know, Michelle Obama looks like she should be in the cast of Planet of the Apes". It was a reference to the makeup artist's depiction of himself as Michelle Obama.

If you want to make the stretch of saying he is comparing Michelle Obama to an ape, you're welcome to do so.

Edit: - correction, upon further review, Michelle Obama's picture was shown in comparison to the makeup artist's transformations

You are lying

The fashionista, known for his critical "Fashion Police"-style remarks, analyzed Ballesteros' transformation for Michelle Obama with an original photo of the first lady beside it."Mind you, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she's part of the cast of "Planet of the Apes," the film," Figueroa said.

Lmao, ah okay, she said she should be cast in Planet of the Apes. A movie with a bunch of people dressed like apes. And that's somehow different than being called a monkey. You're either pretending to be obtuse about the implications of his comments or you're trying to parse a new meaning to his words. Which is it?

Also, Michelle Obama's face was used when the bit started. You're REALLY trying hard to excuse this.

I corrected my post after reviewing the OP clip. I don't speak Spanish, so I can't comment on the context of the discussion that took place, only the translation provided.

And again, I don't look at people and see skin colour - I'm not built that way and never have - you, and others, in America are apparently raised to view people by the colour of their skin and react to references to them as references to their race. That's not how I was raised or how I live my life. You have your views based on your life experiences - I have mine. I respect yours - you can choose to view mine however you'd like - makes no difference to me. I'll continue to express my opinion - it is of no less or greater value than yours.

Yeah ok buddy.

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

Sorry you missed the analogy and got it so ****ing wrong. It's comparable to the outcry of free speech - Charlie should be allowed to make fun of Muslims and Mohammed, ridicule his image, and the world should protect the magazine's humour and political bite, but a gay fashionista should be driven from the air and ostracized completely for daring to make a nasty, snide comment about Michelle Obama's looks. It's the double standard so frequently at play here - your speech is protected and sacred as long as I support it.

See, now that you've clarified your position it makes you look even worse, because that idiotic of a comparison actually reflects your premeditated beliefs and wasn't something you just came up with off the cuff.

These two situations bear absolutely ZERO similarity. In the Charlie Hebdo situation, journalists were murdered by jihadists, then a few idiotic news commentators made some ****ty comments. In this situation a news commentator made a ****ty comment and was fired by his employer for it.

Comparing an employer firing an employee for saying something bigoted to jihadist murders is pretty much the modern equivalent of Godwin'ing and argument. You might as well have thrown in some nazis for good measure. Jesus christ that what an idiotic comparison.

Your post here doubles down on the stupidity of your first post - are you purposely being obtuse?

I'm not comparing anything to jihadists. I'm comparing the glorifying of the Charlie cartoonists, celebrating their free speech rights to be as outrageous as they wish to the condemnation of a fashionista, freely speaking his point of view. In the Charlie case, it's glorified because many love ridiculing religion and Islam in particular. In the fashionista case, it's condemned because many love the American First Lady. Free speech is only a wonderful principle for some when the speech is something they support and agree with.

Got it now? Or are you still intent on flogging a point that was never made?

There is absolutely zero comparison. You're still peddling this absolute nonsense. Please list all of the people who were fired from Charlie Hebdo for voicing their opinions in a journalistic manor. You're comparing a company firing an employee to random newscasters making comments that effected no one and cost no one a single job.

Your ignorance and devotion to derailing this thread into a charlie hebdo discussion is mind blowing. It's not really any wonder people around here don't really take you seriously.

Why don't you go to your work and make some racist comments then when they fire you, you can whine about Charlie Hebdo.

Doh - so your post triples down on dense - no, no one was fired from Charlie - that's the point. Thousands of people if not millions find the Charlie cartoons offensive, and not all of them are Muslims, but you support the message so you champion their free speech. You don't like the reference to Michelle Obama, so you want the guy fired and strung up. You don't support free speech, you support the freedom of speech you support.

And just to be clear, a Charlie cartoonist was fired previously because he made fun of Jews in his work. But you didn't hear about that.

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

You are lying

In his defense, I don't think he's actually lying, I think he actually thinks this situation is just like the Charlie Hebdo massacre. It is absolutely mind boggling the lengths angry conservatives on the internet will go to attack the Obamas.

Uh huh, so now the tenuous connection you claimed now has no relevance whatsoever?

I don't know how it is in Canada, but in most parts of the world free speech has absolutely nothing to do with your employer firing you.

So let's compare again:

Charlie Hebdo: Jihadists murdered journalists, no one was fired.

Univision Incident: Journalist was fired by a private company for poorly representing the company, no one was killed.

Making a comparison to these two things is patently absurd. You're free to wish to have the power to force companies to employ people they don't want, but you don't have that power. Stop crying and stop making idiotic unrelated comparisons.

He seems to think that there's some sort of contradiction being demonstrated because some statements are approved of while others are criticized. His idea of free speech means that people must either approve of all statements or criticize all statements.

It's another case of the right not recognizing that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of speaking.

I'm familiar with the historical aspect of it, but my questions still stand as I don't understand the basic logic to make the comparison.

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

Think what kind of racist this girl is... Think she's from the cosby show...

https://www.yahoo.com/tv/raven-symo...eek-113898423810.html?soc_src=mail&soc_trk=ma

She was. I think she was a late comer to that show as the step daughter of one of the characters when she got married. She also famously came out recently as being gay.

The ones who keep displaying offense at Michelle's face being compared to a cast member in the Planet of the Apes apparently think Michelle resembles an ape, hence the outrage. I don't think she looks any more like a cast member in Planet of the Apes, personally.

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

When she doesn't look peeved, which she so often does, I think Michelle Obama's face is very pretty.

I thought there might be something to this, so I went and searched some images.. I don't see it. But everyone can see something different.

Re: Emmy-Winning Mexican Univision host Fired Over Racist "Planet of Apes"=Michelle O

Um... all humans are apes. It is offensive when used to belittle someone, but I grow tired of people assuming it is awful to be compared to an animal. I think apes are beautiful... :)
