Just as the “Islamic State” in Iraq was exposed as a fictional cover for what was also essentially Al Qaeda (as reported by the NYT in their article, “Leader of Al Qaeda group in Iraq was fictional, U.S. military says“), ISIS too is just the latest and greatest re-visioning yet.

The authors also emphasise that IS is not new, but rather emerged from the ashes of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), one of the most brutal foes of the Americans following their 2003 invasion. AQI was largely defeated after the US convinced local tribes to rise up against them -- a strategy known as "The Awakening", which has deeply influenced IS strategy.

"From the beginning, they've been obsessed with the Awakening," said Hassan. "They've done everything to prevent it happening again: built sleeper cells, bought loyalty, divided communities. "They've succeeded in making internal resistance practically impossible. No tribe will fight them, because they will find themselves fighting their own brothers and cousins."

Although the Baathists were originally a secular movement, Saddam introduced a "Faith campaign" in the 1990s that sought to Islamise society. "Very few people have focused on the impact of that campaign," said Hassan. "It radicalised many Baathists and they combined the violence of the regime with that of jihadism, making them even worse than Al-Qaeda." "But they have combined religion, geopolitics, economics and much more in their ideology.....snip~

IS has built near-impregnable base and mass appeal: new book

Nothing more than the Old Version of the Muslim Brotherhood, albeit more extreme.

Yea I was surprised too. Must have been before they got everyone on the pay roll.

Whatever they were called there were definitely Muslims arriving to kill Iraqi Muslims and Coalition troops during the Iraqi war. Did these people have a name?

Whatever they were called it was clear they didn't want democracy for the Iraqi people and recognized the value of Iraq as a source for oil and a stronghold in the Middle East. All this may, or may not, been understood by Barrack Obama. It was certainly understood by the Islamists however.

Mornin Grant. :2wave: Yeah the MB.....just like with Syria, Libya, Egypt Algeria, Tunisia, they are all over the place. Although they did have some others aligned with them that had their own names back in the 80s.

Leading up to this point the president of Nigeria was begging for help from this administration. When he didn't get the help, he went to Russia looking for arms but that was thwarted because of the Ukraine mess.
Then he turned to Israel for some helicopters. Israel agreed and our government stopped the sale.

Our Constitution gives the Executive branch a lot of power in regard to foreign affairs. I have no doubt this president will go down in history as the worst, passing Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter.

Greetings, Vesper. :2wave:

I love listening to Judge Jeanine! Whether one agrees with her or not, her arguments always make sense! I agree with her! Thanks for posting this.

Jeanine Pirro is a moron.

I'm curious as to what, exactly, the people who stomp their feet and scream about how incompetent Obama is would like to see him do about ISIS that he's not already doing.

Thank you.

I can't get Fox here and had never heard of her. she does make sense...

and btw, Kerry is more and more Lurch-ish every day. I fully expect Pugsie to come up behind him with an axe any time he's peaking.

I am so mollified that as the United States is on Yellow alert for terrorists and has been for 15 years, that we are safer than we were when Reagan bombed Libya......

These guys are nuts, just ****ing whacko nuts, off the reservation and drinking gasoline nuts...

Oh, is that your Opinion.

What were curious as to.....is why you can't figure out what could be done to deal with ISIS. Besides what BO peep is doing. Imagine that! :lamo

You didn't answer my query. I know what could be done; all sorts of things could be done. I asked what it is you want him to do. But thank you for your completely substance-free response. It was exactly what I was expecting.

Have you yet figured out you didn't ask me anything.....or did that fly past you when you were asked to put up or shut up.

Does anyone with something to actually say care to address my post?

Kill them?

Maybe make some kind of identifiable progress in one of the seven countries the US military is involved? Maybe win some territory back. Perhaps, I dn't know, take out one or more of their leaders like the incompetent Bush did in Iraq THE LAST TIME.

You know, actually wage war instead of waxing about what faith they may or not, in his opinion, they are or are not a part of. Maybe, just maybe some optics like the King of Jordan, hang a few. Or maybe make us believe, just for a second in all of his two terms, that just once, for a moment at least, he cared a little.....you know, like other world leaders with whom you felt true grief when the announced the screaming death of a pilot Obama had sent to war....maybe not be on the golf course a few minutes later, laughing and joking.

And maybe doe something to bring the country together like others in times of war, like Obama's alleged hero FDR...instead of provoking cheap domestic fights......

In short, be at least as good as George W. Bush, and act like a wartime president.

Greetings, Kobie. :2wave:

Firstly, I have never said he was incompetent, although I will agree with those who say he is "inept." Bombing empty buildings in the middle of the night doesn't seem to be working, so what exactly is he doing about ISIS? He wants to give them jobs? They're beheading people, burning people alive, including children, killing anyone that doesn't agree with them, and torturing and killing homosexuals, among other things, Kobie. I would like to see that bull**** stopped! Period!

I am waiting for you to produce something.....anything. Now you need to put up, or you know the drill.

So, in other words, kill them (which we already are) and stupid bull**** window dressing crap designed to make conservatives feel good about a war they stand to lose nothing in. Awesome.

Do we really want to commit to another ground war in Asia?

Show progress, you missed that and a bunch of other really, really important stuff.

As usual.

Does your mind ever open?

Of course we'd all like to see it stopped.

The "jobs" line was horribly and dishonestly ripped out of context by the conservative media bull**** machine.

"Show progress." Are you privy to any and all military reports? There's only so much we can do with airstrikes.
