DHS funding expected to run out as key House vote fails - CNN.com

The Republican-controlled House was unable to muster enough votes to pass the 3-week stopgap measure.

The Department of Homeland Security currently has 6 hours left of full funding left.

Somebody pass me the popcorn. It's gonna be a long night on Capitol Hill. :popcorn2:

Obama's going to step in during the 11th hour and save the day....not. LOL!

He can just sign an executive order that funds the DHS with his pen and phone.... no?

Then he would be walking back the admin's "everything is better now" mantra. Does DHS need all the money or not?

I'm hearing Twitter rumors that the House may try to pass a one-week bill. Yes, one-week. Nothing confirmed yet.

Less than 6 hours to go.

I'm no fan of the DHS, trust me. But this is an abysmal way to defund it.

What else can they do though? I mean, the whole reason we're in the sorry place we are in (not just with the DHS stuff but with the US Budget in general) is that everyone seems to agree that some cutbacks are needed, but no one is willing to cut back on their pet project. At some point, the line has to be drawn somewhere doesn't it?

Democrats endangering the security of the homeland by standing loyal to illegal foreign immigrants.

that , people, is patriotism.

I refer you to my previous answer. Six months should even be enough time for Boehner to hammer out a more long-term solution.

And this is the kind of insanity that got us in this mess.

Democrats had six years to fix the budget and debt crisis in this country, so I'm not exactly critical of Boehner not being able to hammer out a long-term solution in six months. That being said, I've grown so tired of the back and forth between Republicans and the White House on these issues when the solutions are so obvious...

Also, in reference to your post about the illegal immigrants thing, Obama is the one that started all this when he decided to go unilaterally and act before the Republican Congress was sworn into office.

Dude, this is not a matter of months or even weeks. This is a matter of hours. What kind of message does it send to the world when we can't even fund the organization that purports to stop terrorist attacks on our soil before they even happen?

All the critical functions will continue to occur, that's well within the President's power to do so, just as occurred during the brief shutdown. Of course, I guess if Obama wanted to prove a point, he could choose not to, as he's done in the past. Look, the government is dysfunctional, and it's not like this latest incident was really that newsy in the sense it wasn't expected.

What kind of message did the Obama administration send to the rest of the World when he decided to bail out Iraq without a SoFA agreement in place ?

What kind of message does it say to the world when Obama won't even associate Islam with Islamo-terrorist ?

What kind of message does it say when the Obama comes out and warns against terrorist attacks by " Right Wing " groups right after ISIS beheads a bunch of Coptic Christians ?

Obama isn't concerned about what the World thinks and niether should you.

The GOP is trying hard to prove they're incapable of actually governing. I'd laugh at the incompetence, but this kind of stuff really isn't funny.

3 weeks - good they turned it down- no more drama for the 3 weeks with boner who cannot talk to his Senate counterpart, so he that is cued to cry at the right time can save his tears.

They're doing a bang up job Governing here in my home state of Texas.

Billions of dollars in a rainy day fund, a growing economy, millions of Americans bailing out of Blue Plague States like California moving here to find jobs.

Texas leads the Nation in Job Creation across al income levels and every sector of our diverse economy has out grown the Obama economy by leaps and bounds.

You may not know what the word " incompetent " means so Ill help you out with a example.

Incompetent is coming out and raising the alarm on the chance of terror attacks by home grown " right wing " groups right after ISIS beheads a bunch of Coptic Christians.

If we can pretend to enforce immigration law without funding then we can pretend to protect the homeland without funding as well. Government "shutdowns" amount ro paid vacations for the affected non-essential public servant personnel accompanied by slowdowns of the rest - only the contractors get screwed since it is deemed immoral (illegal?) to pay them not to work.

What shouldn't surprise me but still does is how little control Boehner has over his own caucus. So in that sense it's expected - he's proving to be pretty incompetent which is nothing new.

Because the Democrats have done such a wonderful job up to this point haven't they?

The problem with the US Government, and US Politics for that matter, is how one side sees the impending typhoon that is about the hit and refuses to do anything about it, while the other is bickering to the point where they are paralyzed by their arguments. Incidentally, those two sides aren't exclusively Democrat or Republicans as there's a mix in with both camps.

He is at least trying to find a middle ground. Like I said above, you have some in the Republican Caucus (and in the Democrats to be fair) that see the storm coming and are demanding that we do something about it now, while there are many others on both sides that are content to just let things ride out. Also, We wouldn't be in this situations if Obama didn't feel like he had to have it his way and that be it. He could just accept the will of Congress and not use his veto pen you know?

Obviously I was talking about at the Federal level since this matter is in front of Congress, not the Texas state legislature.

It's also being elected to Congress and not being able to pass a simple funding bill for DHS. It's Boehner getting blindsided by his own caucus, it's his Whip not being able to do the simplest job of counting votes for a key piece of legislation and assuming House democrats are going to bail your sorry rear end out of this mess, etc.

I'm not really sure what you mean by typhoon, but I assume it has something to do with spending and debt. I don't really see how this issue relates to that bigger problems. It's immigration that's the stumbling block, and it seems clear we need some kind of rational solution to it.

But the will of Congress includes democrats and so far the Senate and House cannot agree on a bill for Obama to veto or not. McConnell has passed what he can get through, and the House is unwilling to recognize that the other body exists and has limits on what it can pass. I read an article this week about a couple of new GOP Senators going to the House to explain the facts of life to some of the fire breathers and they just ignored the lesson.

And I'm sorry but the Speaker really shouldn't ever bring something to the floor that he doesn't know will pass or not - not at the 11th hour. That's just the most basic part of being a competent speaker with a competent staff. Now Boehner will probably have to work with Pelosi so she can get some of her crew to bail him out.

And yet we have people who enable these buffoons.

T minus 5 hours and counting.

I understand it may seem like that immigration is the only issue at play here, but it's not. Not when you are talking about funding a rather large, and some would argue intrusive, branch of the government. And incidentally, no law is every passed these days without all the parties involved already agreeing to everything. That whole process where the two parties hash out a bill and go to a joint committee to find a compromise, that stuff hasn't happened in YEARS. And incidentally, Republicans have only controlled the senate for a couple of months now. And after the poor relations that the Republican House had with the Senate, it's easy to understand why they wouldn't be on the best of terms, just two months into a new congress.

And yet we have people who enable these buffoons.

I get your all's point about Boehner, but, quick check of facts here, how many Democrats voted for this bill?
