The IRS’s inspector general confirmed Thursday it is conducting a criminal investigation into how Lois G. Lerner’s emails disappeared, saying it took only two weeks for investigators to find hundreds of tapes the agency’s chief had told Congress were irretrievably destroyed.

Investigators have already scoured 744 backup tapes and gleaned 32,774 unique emails, but just two weeks ago they found an additional 424 tapes that could contain even more Lerner emails, Deputy Inspector General Timothy P. Camus told the House Oversight Committee in a rare late-night hearing meant to look into the status of the investigation.

“There is potential criminal activity,” Mr. Camus said.

Republicans said that was stunning because IRS Commissioner John Koskinen repeatedly assured Congress the emails were irretrievably lost.

“I think they have misled or lied to the committee,” said Rep. John L. Mica, Florida Republican.

Mr. Camus said they were clued in to the 424 new tapes they just found a couple of weeks ago after realizing the IRS hadn’t given over a key document. They demanded that document, and realized it showed hundreds of other tapes existed.

It's clear the IRS was used as a political weapon against the Demokrats opponents.

Stalin would have been proud.

I believe the word "potenital" is an understatement.

I have no trouble at all concluding the White House used the IRS to attack political enemies. The fact the IG so quickly found the needle in the haystack adds to my conclusion.

It will be interesting to learn about the meat and potatoes of the emails that were so quickly "vanished", and have now miraculously been found.

THIS is the true scandal, not Benghazi. There should be a select committee looking into this and congress should stop all business until those who used the IRS as a weapon are held accountable.

At this point, what difference does it make? The GOP wont' act, the admin won't actually let the AG or Justice system act, the left will claim it's all a witch hunt and the media will show Lerner as a victim and the average sheep will baaa baa for their next government check and NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.

Yep, just like the IRS "accidents" which will lower the PPACA mandate non-compliance penalties and/or increase the subsidies. ;)

Nothing would give me more confidence in our faltering system of government and justice than seeing both of those smug assholes put in jail on criminal charges, should there be evidence to do so, of course. :fueltofir

Or the mysterious billions unfunded paid out to the big insurance companies...

Yep, just like with Solyndra, the VA and fast & fuzzy "scandals", our congress critters will "act". Some mid-level lackeys will be "discovered" and publicly shamed (and privately rewarded?).

That will likely go largely unnoticed during the 2016 presidential race frenzy. PPACA repeal is (and has been) off the table - the only option left to the republicants is to babble about a replacement "system".

The IRS has opened a criminal investigation? The same IRS that insisted the emails were "lost" due to a "hard drive crash", and called the whole thing a "witch hunt"? That IRS??

Sorry you're wrong, this was started by a conservative Republican manager in Cincinnati.

Federal investigators are looking for possible criminal activity in connection with the missing emails of a central figure in the Internal Revenue service’s targeting scandal. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration testified at a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on Thursday that it tracked down nearly 33,000 emails from ex-IRS official Lois Lerner. …

Koskinen may have set himself up for a contempt charge with Congress; at the very least, he’s going to have to explain how he gave them false information about IRS records last year. Did he know about a cover-up, or did his aides pull a fast one on him too? To sell that, he’ll need to dispense with his arrogance this time around. He may well discover that Lois Lerner’s strategy of taking the Fifth may be his best path moving forward......snip~

This is why you get sloppy, self centered presidents and a corrupt congress.

Baa baaa is what you are doing "oh me, oh my, oh dear, things will never change....what's the use."

When about half the country can't be bothered to even vote, you get ****-for-brains government and the people who sit on their hands are responsible. I run into this here and 99% of the time the whiners have never voted and sure as hell never made it to an all candidates meeting to raise ****. Start asking the hard questions of the douche bags who represent the parties at the grass roots level. When you make things uncomfortable for them, the incompetent run away.

Fine. I don't care who started it, it is a major scandal anytime anyone uses the power of the state to oppress the public. But if a 'conservative Republican manager in Cincinnati' started this, why did Lois Lerner take the fifth?

I wish I knew, I wish she would testify. I wonder why she is not offered immunity so she can't take the fifth anymore. Anyway there isn't any proof this involves the president.

I didn't say it did involve the president or anyone in the administration. I suspect it might begin and end with Lerner, which is why she wont talk and they wont give her immunity.

FL.... I just said that. I'm on your side hoss, maybe that wasn't clear?

You never will question the official line will you?

The Department of Treasury lost its central archive server a few years ago. When they did a bid on recovery (it wasn't redundant) the best bid they got was $80 million and 2 years to re-index the archival tapes. This is where the "Two years to recover the emails" claims in the hearings came from. Essentially the Treasury has been operating on a CYA for a couple years, not willing to reveal the scope of their screw up by requesting the funding to fix it.

The behavior of the IT department, as well a Treasury upper and IT management, regarding how they treated Lerner's email, especially given the existence of the failed archive, is target rich for a government inquiry.

The IRS claim that they didn't have a retention policy on email is complete bull crap. They pay the Treasury to manage their email as a stub off of the Treasury domain and Treasury is required to keep all email, period.

The fact that criminal activity is likely to have included in the course of ongoing "in house investigation" of improprieties at the IRS is hardly a stunning revelation, but the real criminal activity will be if nothing is done about and if those that perpetrated the illegal acts are not held to account for their actions.

You might be right, I don't know.

How does that make sense? What would motivate her to do this, without some direction or impetus from outside the IRS?
