US, NATO Troops Parade Near Russian Border in Estonia

Right. But the whole point is that the West enabled that by pretending that EU/NATO partnership might be a reality.

We screwed them over with false hope.

EU/NATO partnership remains a viable goal for the Ukrainians.

The fact that the percentage going to college has fallen is not on point regarding how many should go.

and i don't much care what percentage of kids you personally think is the ideal number to send to college, Jack. i don't support endless war either way. i think the money is better spent on education and other things that make our country better. you and i are never going to agree on this and i doubt we have much common ground, so the discussion is fairly pointless.

As far back as 1798:
[h=3]Robert Goodloe Harper - "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute."[/h]There has not been and will not be "endless war." That conceit says more about the ease of life for most Americans than it does about calls for sacrifice. There were over ten times as many American deaths in Vietnam than in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. And education blossomed. Don't claim that defense undermines education because that's just not true.

and you do realize that we can send the kids to school instead, right? we've tried the neoconservative worldview, and it hasn't worked. it's time to try something different.

either way, vote for whatever hawk you want. i'm not going to do that.

Pretty pictures, flying the Stars & Stripes.

If Russia were doing that in Mexico or Cuba, would we be apoplectic? ;)

Russia did it for decades in Cuba until it became such a economic parasite that they got the hell out.

Strong defense allows us to send the kids to school.

I've never been a neoconservative myself, although I admire the courage of their intellectual journey from the far left. I also applaud their history of leadership on social causes. Nonetheless, I'm just an old-fashioned American: hard money, strong defense, individual liberty.

participation in every global conflict is not necessary for strong defense. many conflicts need to be handled by regional hegemons.

If that is indeed true how does that justify what Russia is doing ? There have been 5000+ Ukrainian deaths to date and to the best of my knowledge NATO has been responsible for none of them

That is already happening.

really? so the EU will be handling Ukraine, and Saudi Arabia and Iran will be handling IS without our help? that's news to me.

No, but China is handling Tibet, and Israel is handling Gaza/Palestine.

yet we're not invading China, nor are you advocating for us to arm the rebels there or to fight a proxy war with China.

No, because we can't be everywhere, and some bridges are too far.

Ukraine is a viable state with a real possibility to defend its freedom and independence. Worth helping. Tibet is a heartbreaking cause, but they have no chance.

then the EU should have serious discussions with Russia and get it figured out. a proxy war with the US isn't going to help.

Never said it's justified.

I just said it's expected.

And if you don't want it to happen, don't tease Ukraine with a possibility of joining the EU or NATO.

Russia does not want a solution. Russia wants to break Ukraine, cow the EU and destroy NATO.

Greetings, Jack. :2wave:

Does Russia provide oil and gas to the EU countries?

then it looks like the EU needs to address that. meanwhile, we have a country that needs to be upgraded to meet the competitive demands of the 21st century.

for too long, neoconservatives have dictated our foreign policy. while citing the founding fathers incessantly, they seem to completely ignore the warnings Washington gave us as he left office. how do you feel about that, Jack? was Washington incorrect? if so, what else was he incorrect about?
