How a powerful rightwing lobby is plotting to stop minimum wage hikes | US news | The Guardian

Cara Sullivan, who heads Alec’s commerce, insurance and economic development taskforce, told the meeting that corporate America was facing an “onslaught” of bids to raise the minimum wage at all levels of government. “Perhaps the biggest threat comes from the local level. We are seeing a number of localities that have increased their minimum wage,” she said, according to the accounts.

<snip>

Alec’s response, Sullivan went on to explain at the meeting, is to frame and then lobby for model legislation in state assemblies across the country. She said that so far 12 states, most recently Oklahoma, have submitted anti-increase legislation based on the rightwing lobbyists’ language. “Our solution that Alec has passed is state legislation that pre-empts the polities from within the state from raising the minimum wage higher than state level,” she told the meeting.

ALEC strikes again! Who cares what city residents vote for! Race to the bottom and permanent poverty FTW

Re: How a powerful rightwing lobby is plotting to stop minimum wage hikes

I think from a Federal level it should be blocked. This is a states issue ... if Montana wants a $10 an hour minimum wage and California wants a $25 an hour minimum wage they can and should be able to set their own. That there are state and local lobbies fighting it just as there are state and local lobbies fighting FOR it is nothing new. This happens on issues which are NOT pet projects of the President as well.

The only poverty being promised here is the breakdown of full time jobs into part time jobs, and the lack of jobs for highly educated and qualified personnel who are now forced to work at Walmart for a LIVING at minimum wage. Minimum wage was never meant to support a family, mortgage and car payment and the left who is trying to MAKE it into such a thing want to create an environment where small business and entrepreneurship become extinct.

WELL DONE LEFTY'S - Deep six all those mom and pop stores as well as those start up businesses. The only one's left standing will be the large, evil corporations. :lamo So much for the law of unintended consequences!

what you are saying is--- you didn't read the article.

the issue is can states prohibit their cities from setting MW higher than state establishes.

but boy, you had your copy-pasta non-germane troll response ready. kudos. i guess.

The answer is yes of course states can prohibit cities from setting MW higher - didn't you read what I posted? And of course I read the article.... I threw up a little trying to get through it, but I did.

Just as I don't want the Federal government encroaching on the States any more than necessary, I don't want the states encroaching on cities and local government. The more localized the government the more sovereignty it should have. So if a city wants to raise its minimum then the state should butt out.

uhh................

It doesn't. Making minimum wage just puts me back on the line. When prices go up because companies raises prices to pay...I'm screwed paying $10 for a gallon of milk instead of $5

SlevinKelevra doesn't need to read/understand what you posted because he/she is sooooo much smarter than the rest of us and knows what's best for us. Your response was clear and I agree with you. States can prohibit cities from raising or lowering minimum wages. It's not a difficult issue to understand for most but SlevinKelevra has trouble with common sense.

so because MW is increased, your skillset declines?

Re: How a powerful rightwing lobby is plotting to stop minimum wage hikes

When minimum wage is raised, the prices for goods and services rise. This often results in minimum wage getting a raise but anyone already making above minimum wage does not, thus actually reducing the value of the wage that is paid. All raises in minimum wage hurt non MW workers and those on fixed income. A hike in MW causes inflation of costs to adjust, thus MW workers, though earning more, end up in the same economic position while others are dragged down as their wages devaluate.

circular logic detected.

If you want less poverty I want to see your threads supporting the house bill for california water relief, the senate O&C timber bill, comprehensive infrastructure programs and the keystone pipeline. Raising minimum wage raises no one out of poverty, I live in the state with the highest MW in the country. The problem is lack of blue collar employment. And unfortunately the urban wing of the Democratic Party will not allow that to happen

Re: How a powerful rightwing lobby is plotting to stop minimum wage hikes

I don't want a minimum wage hike. I'm making above minimum, and raises would put me back on minimum wage. How does that benefit me?

We all don't get raises when minimum wage goes up? (sarcasm)

That translates into me making less overall as minimum wages go up. I have to expect the retailers to up their prices to cover the increase.

But "states' rights" and "local control" only works when it screws over the little guy. C'mon, you know that. /snark

Re: How a powerful rightwing lobby is plotting to stop minimum wage hikes

You don't get this do you?

I make $11 an hour. Obama raises all wages to $11 because this is gonna save us all. Except now I'm making $11...the same as the 16 year old fry cook. I don't see an extra penny, oh and the McDonald's decides to raise the cost of a Big Mac to offset paying billy $11 to do a job he was getting paid $7.50 for. Prices go up, and Obama screwed me out of money I was trying to save so I could make more than $11 an hour.

Who is going to shell out the money for this wage increase? Do you understand how business works? McDonald's sells a hamburger so they can stay open. They pay a portion of that hamburger to the fry cook, the manager, drivers, CEOs, and all that. All so they can turn a profit...not because they are evil...but because they want to make more money to live a happy life and pay for their kids too. The money they pay all their employees comes from the customer. They foot the bill.

So what happens when you raise minimum wage? You raise the cost on the customer. And you make those guys above minimum make minimum too. Thanks, but no thanks.

Maybe we could increase the strength of the dollar so minimum is worth more? Nah. That would be crazy.

Companies can not simply raise prices because they want to. The incidence of the cost will be partially borne by the market and partially borne by the employer. On the flip side, putting pay in the hands of workers means putting more money out into the economy as low income workers spend nearly 100% of her income, thus it will translate to more sales of products.

Re: How a powerful rightwing lobby is plotting to stop minimum wage hikes

Why stop at $10? Why not make it $1,000 and hour?
