Russia's former largest foreign investor: Putin is worth $200 billion

Hedge fund manager Bill Browder, once the largest foreign investor in Russia, estimates Russian President Vladimir Putin's wealth at $200 billion — which would make him by far the richest man in the world. When asked to estimate his net worth by Fareed Zakaria of CNN, Browder said: "I believe that it is $200 billion."After 14 years in power of Russia, and the amount of money that the country has made, and the amount of money that hasn't been spent on schools and roads and hospitals and so on — all that money is in property, Swiss bank accounts, shares, [and] hedge funds managed for Putin and his cronies."Bill Gates is considered the world's richest man with a net worth of $79 billion.Putin, a former KGB lieutenant colonel, became Russian prime minister in August 1999 and president in May 2000.Browder notes that the "first eight or 10 years about reign over Russia was about stealing as much money that he could." From 2001 to 2007, the Russian economy made average gains of about 7% per year, and its GDP grew six fold.As the economy (driven by oil) boomed in the 21st century, Putin consolidated power while making his friends and himself absurdly rich from state coffers."Soon after taking over, [Putin] made it clear that he intended to remove the Yeltsin-era elite and to put a new elite in its place—mostly from St. Petersburg, equally corrupt, but loyal exclusively to him," Anne Applebaum in wrote recently in The New York Review of Books.

Putin made his money in the ancient way. Like tyrant.

What's the point, that oligarchs get rich off the backside of conflict? How profound.

Lol, moronic Russians at the end of the day.

It's them who put him in power.

Perhaps when Putin is in the grave they will have wised up.

I bet none of it is in rubles.

Too bad all of that money will not be able to fix:

#1 his physical ugliness

#2 his moral/ethical ugliness

Putin seems to be ravaging Russia. So sad for the people.

Good expose on Putin. Putin’s Way | FRONTLINE | PBS

The short version is that Putin is corrupt as hell, and a murderer to boot. Essentially, Russia is governed by cruel criminals seeking to line their pockets and project their image as hard thugs...somehow that image is quite appealing to the Russian psyche. Perhaps even the ideal.

Hey, some do it overtly, and some do it covertly.

Please explain Monte.

Putin is in the open and will physically crush dissent in his country. The more democratic a nation, the more the dirty **** has to be done in secret or with a powerful lot of domestic propaganda.

There's dirt in all politics. I don't think we've ever had a President accumulate such great wealth while in power though. I would argue that democracy limits the corruption and swindling as much as is possible with respect to other government models.

Democracy certainly makes corruption more difficult and the corrupt need be craftier, we can agree.

I knew Putin was a wealthy man several years ago. The show they put on for Sochi was not bad, money was involved Russian style. But I didn't know he was worth that much, assuming the estimate is correct. Humans at play. ;)

But then I didn't know they were paying Brian Williams $10 million a year either. This is not my area of expertise, but it appears we finally persuaded those Russians to abandon communism.

If the democracy includes the absolute rule of law against government employees who defraud the people, then I agree with what you say.

If we don't have the rule of law in society, democracy is an illusion.

Good point.

Doubtful.
The Czars are in the grave.
Stalin is in the grave.
All the "leaders" that followed Stalin are in the grave.
Yet, despite a rich history of oppression, Russia seems to gravitate towards dictatorial rulers.
Maybe the rooskies just like to be bossed around.
Have you seen "Fifty Shades of Grey"?

Or, even if the rule of law is there but it's enforced selectively.

His buddy Yanukovych the ex president of Ukraine was clearly trying to emulate the example of Putin before the Ukrainian people had the good sense to throw him out

Toppled 'mafia' president cost Ukraine up to $100 billion, prosecutor says | Reuters

The economic damage such corrupt and massive sequestrations have had on the much smaller Ukrainian economy can only be imagined

By some guesstimates I have read, Putin has lost a nominal $100 Billions personally. Mark you, he is no poor man.

He has never actually been a businessman of any sort yet he is richer than Bill Gates and some people here actually admire him for it whilst at the same time ranting about the excesses of capitalism !

Go figure

Nope. Not a businessman in the Western sense. It is said he was able to get $ 250 millions of the KGB funds and it's been young man made good ever since.
