Pakistan likely knew of Osama bin Laden

My assessment […] was it is quite possible that they [the ISI] did not know but it was more probable that they did. And the idea was that at the right time, his location would be revealed. And the right time would have been, when you can get the necessary quid pro quo — if you have someone like Osama bin Laden, you are not going to simply hand him over to the United States.

The implication here is that bin Laden would have been a bargaining chip in the complicated shadow war playing out in the region, as the United States struggled to tamp down a Taliban insurgency in neighboring Afghanistan. The ISI, of course, has played a double game for some time — and is believed to have both helped engineer the creation of the Taliban as well as support other Islamist militant groups that target arch-rival India.

Wow. So another country that really does not like us much was probably dishonest about someone we were looking for. I'm shocked... :shocked2:

i wonder why everyone in the media is acting like this revelation is shocking or unheard of? this is probably the 191st occasion that pakistan has somehow undermined our efforts in the war on terror.

Interesting. But it wouldn't have been Pakistan that knew. But there were very probably mullahs and politicians and agents and soldiers that did. And they certainly hadn't looked very hard.

Undermined our efforts, or looked after their own interests not unlike any other country.

I don't think Pakistan is a threat, per se, but they're certainly not our friends.

What ya wanna do, nuke em, regime change, economic sanctions that hurt the population and not the intended leadership. Will anybody ever figure out why the US has such a credibility problem in the ME?

Nope- But they may cause a war with India. Terror attacks in Mumbai to water disputes.

My opinion is they, with their present system of supporting terror are a threat to stability between Pakistan and India.

In an expose published last year in the New York Times, veteran reporter Carlotta Gall claimed that the ISI — formally known as the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence — even had a special desk dedicated to handling bin Laden.

“It was operated independently, led by an officer who made his own decisions and did not report to a superior,” reported Gall. “The desk was wholly deniable by virtually everyone at the ISI — such is how supersecret intelligence units operate — but the top military bosses knew about it, I was told.”

And who then is Russia, Saudi Arabia, China, the US and the UK a threat to with all their support of terror?

Stop fretting about what "may" happen and pay attention to what is happening.

Mumbai attacks nearly caused a war- India was quite restrained in their efforts.
Pakistan is now a water critical country. India has been building dams and reservoirs, Pakistan, nearly squat.
That is what is happening.
Water wars are rated as hilly probable for conflict in may areas of the world.

Pakistan's water shortage drips towards disaster | The National
"The country is heading towards an acute water crisis," confirms Dr Qamar-uz-Zaman, who served as head of Pakistan's metrological department for several years.

Given Pakistan's scarcity of water and proclivity to blame others, a 2009 CIA report concluded that "the likelihood of conflict between India and Pakistan over shared river resources is expected to increase".

American Pakistan Foundation
The mismanagement of water will have its biggest impact on Pakistan’s agricultural sector. According to the World Bank, 43% of Pakistan’s employment is in the agricultural sector (WDI 2014). This prosperous industry relies on the single largest contiguous irrigation system in the world. While this is an impressive feat, Pakistan also fosters one of the lowest crop yields per unit of water in the world. This is alarming because Pakistan uses a whopping 97% of its water resources on its agriculture industry (Kamal 32).

And when this happens again, a single mistake can lead to another War.

Mumbai attacks: India raises security footing to 'war level' - Telegraph

In response to a string of public accusations from Delhi, officials in Islamabad said troops could be moved to the Indian border if relations continue to deteriorate.

"Our intelligence will be increased to a war level, we are asking the state governments to increase security to a war level," Sriprakash Jaiswal, India's minister for state for home affairs, told Reuters.

There can be no doubt that Pakistan is a pretty scary one as endangered states go.

WikiLeaks cables expose Pakistan nuclear fears | World news | The Guardian
American and British diplomats fear Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme could lead to fissile material falling into the hands of terrorists or a devastating nuclear exchange with India.

The latest cache of US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks contains warnings that Pakistan is rapidly building its nuclear stockpile despite the country's growing instability and "pending economic catastrophe"

Challenges for Pakistan
The attack last August against the Kamra military air base in Pakistan reignited concerns about the threat that terrorists could pose to the security of the Pakistani nuclear arsenal. There is no doubt that recent attacks on military targets in Pakistan have increased in number and boldness. So far, however, the targets of the attacks have not been military installations that contain nuclear weapons or components.

Yet, the confluence of increased terrorist activity in Pakistan, the country’s ongoing political instability, and the growing size of the Pakistani nuclear arsenal is increasing the challenge to Pakistan’s nuclear security. The number of facilities and people that produce and use sensitive nuclear materials and technologies in Pakistan is increasing, raising the bar for personnel screening and infrastructure protection. Last summer, there was a reported threat by the Taliban to attack the nuclear complex at Dera Ghazi Khan, a remote town in southern Punjab, but the attack failed to materialize.

Nope- Not needed. Nor do I need to be educated on the tribal divisions within Pakistan- the Govt within a Govt that supports terror attacks.
Pakistan is a basket case waiting to explode.

And we let them have nukes and are wringing our hands over Iran, Jesus. Ok, once we've destroyed Pakistan and the Islamic state has operational control of it too, what's the next country that the fear mongers are going to accuse of being a threat to us, or a powder keg about to explode. Ever hear of minding ones business and leaving things be. For all its meddling in the ME, the US has done enough damage. I'm so frustrated that Americans remain in constant fear of one third world country after another. What a successful scam the American oligarchs pull over on Americans. I'm not scared, and I'm not buying what your selling here.

I did not state destroy- I posed the issues faced by India- Pakistan- time for them to address - Yet Pakistan keeps on sliding into a **** hole.

Yes, and all the supporters of George Bush and his folly in Iraq (I was not one) I'll bet didn't think that he was going to destroy that country either. As I'm sure everybody here that supported the military intervention in Libya didn't think we were going to destroy that country either, yet look at it now. And what about Syria, yes its in fine shape. God only knows what you're advocating for Pakistan, but no, HELL NO, leave it alone and get the **** away. ENOUGH DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE THROUGH US INTERFERENCE IN THE REGION ALREADY!!!!!!!!

In this case, they the CIA seems to corroborate, what others had been reporting. But as far as a lesson on the agency, I doubt you know the whole story, though, you would certainly have the fact you consider indictments at your fingertips.

Lol, yeah, a rogue agency, operating covertly in the shadows, hasn't any reliability.

That response was rather predictable. One didn't even have to know any facts.
