Crazy. First time I saw the footage. They were lucky to have only clipped the bridge and ended up in the drink. If they had hit bottom on something solid, there would have been no survivors.

Looked like they clipped that car first... see the impact dust, or whatever that was?
 
Yeah, that was horrific. If not for the pilot's daring maneuver toward the river, just look at the skyline of highrise residental/office structions that could have been destroyed.

Awful to watch, though. *shudder*

Yeah they definitely hit the top of the van with the end of the wing. Those people are lucky they did not end up in the water too.

I found out it was a taxi and the driver is in critical condition...
 
I have some questions about this event. If there are any pilots around, maybe they can answer. The port side engine flamed out. I understand the pilot shut the other engine down in an attempt to restart. Did he have to do that? Won't that plane fly on one engine? I realize they were less than 40 seconds into the flight, so recovery may not have even been an option, but is shutting both engines down to restart normal procedure?
