Senate passes bill approving Keystone XL pipeline

The United States Senate on Thursday passed a bill to approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. The measure now faces presidential veto.Final approval for the pipeline, which would transport oil from Canada's tar sands to the U.S. Gulf coast energy hub, rests with President Barack Obama because it crosses an international border. Obama threatened to veto the bill if the Senate approved it earlier this month.

As expected it passes the Senate. Now its gonna get a veto and go back. Its gonna easily overcome the 2/3 requirement in the House the big question remains will it overcome the 2/3 in the Senate?

Obama won't veto this because he's a wimp.

While true BO peep is a wimp and was born to be one.....WH spokes person. Joaaaaash says BO will Veto. But it was good to know which Democrats sided against BO. Hope BO remembers this when it comes to Iran.....where his Veto wont mean ****. But he will look like a piece of one, afterwards.

UPDATE: National Journal reports: Here are nine the Senate Democrats who voted for Keystone:

1. Michael Bennet, Colo.

2. Thomas Carper, Del.

3. Robert Casey, Pa.

4. Joe Donnelly, Ind.

5. Heidi Heitkamp, N.D.

6. Joe Manchin, W. Va.

7. Claire McCaskill, Mo.

8. Jon Tester, Mont.

9. Mark Warner, Va.

He's already said he will veto. This is short-lived. Sorry NP.

Its still a defeat for BO Peep as he thought it would be blocked. Thought he could brow beat some Demos. Finally there were 9 of them that stood up for the people rather than carry BO's water.

Repubs win either way. If BHO signs it he angers his environmentalist base and hands the Repubs a nice win. If he vetoes it he hands the Repubs a powerful issue for 2016.

Why would the veto be a win for republicans? Obama is not on the ballot in 2016.

Because they can force the Dem candidate to either stick with BHO's decision and get hammered as anti-growth and anti-jobs, or abandon BHO's decision and turn off the environmental base. It's a great wedge issue for the Repubs. I would not be surprised if Repubs are hoping for a veto.

It's way too early for any non-catastrophic issue to have much effect on the 2016 election.

It will be in the bank, for use as needed.

And if the lawsuits againist keystone kill the pipeline, the issue is moot.

No he didn't. Where did you get that? Obama knew that if was going to pass which is why he stated clearly that he would veto it. How is that a defeat for President Obama? You act as if a bill has never made it to the President's desk that was vetoed.

He is never going to sign it. And...I don't think the pipeline will be the powerful issue that you want it to be. Certainly not the kind that is going to sway a lot of voters.

I disagree. I think it will be powerful because it is simple and visible. As I posted earlier, I suspect Repubs are hoping for a veto.

Are you kidding me?
Even if this bill is enacted, Keystone is not a done deal??!!
This Keystone crap is beginning to remind me of all those zombie movies.
It never dies.

Heya JH. :2wave: Well and that if he does Veto.....it will validate he went against what the People Wanted and were standing for. Also lets not forget.....the oil is still going to flow. It will just be moved in a more dangerous way. Thru trains and trucks, wherein the Demos want to get all those regulations going to scam money. While professing that they care so much about the environment.

Yup. The irony is that pipelines are the safest, cleanest way to move the stuff.

If that's their wish, they will get it. There is no doubt that it will be vetoed. How this is going to affect the 2016 election requires a pretty big stretch. Americans by and large are not passionate over the issue right now. What makes you think they are going to suddenly become passionate over it a year from now?

It's a great union labor issue.

Re-read.....he didn't think he would need to. He didn't think it would pass. Especially after the test vote failed. He thought he had the Demos in line. That's with him coming out and threatening veto to the Repubs. As he surely wasn't talking to those who carry his water.

No I don't act as so.....more than likely I have seen hundreds of vetos passed before you even saw your first one.

Re: Senate passes bill approving Keystone XL oil pipeline Associated Press By DINA CA

The Keystone pipeline is gigantically overblown.

have people never heard of trains? Even if it does not go through, trains can deliver whatever is needed...at somewhat higher costs.

And with oil at $43 a barrel, this project is not a big deal at all at the present time.

And the Jobs? Big deal. They are temporary and if creating jobs is all people want the government to do, then start the unemployed digging and filling up ditches.

This is almost nothing more then politics. The reps think they can make points on it, so they push it. Period.

If either party thought they could make points on ANYTHING...they would push it...even if they had no idea what it was about.

This will mean little, Imo, for 2016. Most dens don't want the same pipeline and most reps do. So what? And even if Obama does something the dems don't like - like not vetoing it - in 2016 then Liz or Hilary can just say they disagree strongly with Obama not vetoing the pipeline.

No way this means anything to who gets the WH in 2016, imo. It might affect the primaries to a point. But the actual election...not in any meaningful way.
