Mormon church backs LGBT rights -- with one condition

Convening a rare press conference on Tuesday at church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Mormon leaders pledged to support anti-discrimination laws for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people, as long the laws also protect the rights of religious groups.

"But, as a matter of public policy, it appears deeply flawed," said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. Doctors, landlords and business owners would still be allowed to discriminate against gays and lesbians, as long as they cited a religious reason, she said.
uhm a couple things

1.) what they are "claiming" to want already exists, protections of rights or religion and religious groups are already in place. Seems they want NEW things that dont exist.

2.) just like people in the article say, this is nothing different than saying

"hey gays can have equal rights and people can't illegal discriminate against them just like people can't illegal discriminate against gender, age, race, religion etc

UNLESS its religious people doing the illegal discrimination then its ok LMAO wow what BS.
also FYI many Mormons dont feel this way they respect equal rights

uhm, am i missing something? who do they think they are fooling?

Yes, read the last few paragraphs of your link to see if you can figure it out.

Ive read the whole thing and about 7 other articles, theres nothgin to figure out

its a dishonest claim they are making saying they support equal rights when they do not

the rights they want already exist and some of the other stuff they mention are in fact NOT rights, never have been and never will be and if they did exist that wouldnt be equal rights.

Their claims of "serious" issues arent serious at all and already have answers to them.

The whole thing is a magic show, look at the right hand while im stealing others rights with my left.

No one honest is going to fall for it.

Yeah your skills at reading between the lines suck:

"What kinds of religious rights are we talking about?" said Elder Jeffrey Holland, a member of the church's Quorum of Twelve Apostles.

It begins with the rights of faith communities to preach their beliefs from the pulpit, teach them in church classrooms and freely select their own leaders and ministers, Holland said.

They are worried about losing their tax exempt status for speaking out against homosexuality.

nope its perfectly fine and just like i said, they arent going for balance or rights protections they want more rights and others to have less

also thier tax exmpt status is perfectly intact and in no danger for just "speaking out against homosexuality" they are free to do so and have that right ALREADY

I'd say the LGBT community should ask what rights Mormons in Utah feel they have. Do they have the right to ... Oh... I don't know... determine who gets married and who doesn't?

Ahh, there's nothing like Jim Crow; or should I say Joseph Smith laws...

Like I said, your skills suck. This is "Okay we will stop opposing gay rights, but we are not going to sop being involved in politics, so you have to let us be involved in politics and keep our tax exemption in exchange for us tolerating gays."

You do realize that the Mormon Church is Florida's largest private land owner don't you?

Ahh, there's nothing like Jim Crow; or should I say Joseph Smith laws...

exactly

the claim of balance is complete crap

its already balanced in areas that have qual rights

heres what we have now in those areas:
its illegal to discriminate against a person based on religion
its illegal to discriminate against a person based on sexual orientation
thats balanced

what they want

its illegal to discriminate against a person based on religion
its illegal to discriminate against a person based on sexual orientation UNLESS you do it based on religion
thats NOT balanced lol

1.) and that makes you wrong twice
2.) the articles completely disagree and show they want MORE rights and they are NOT going to tolerate gays, but think its ok if OTHERS tolerate them
3.) dont give a **** lol nor does it matter, they want to infringe on rights while claiming not to, nobody is going to fall for it

Yes you are clearly open minded. Wonder how anybody like me could be so stupid to think that anybody who controls a million acres of land in the US might be more worried about use of that over whether or not gays get a $255 social security burial benefit?

1.) yes i know
2.) again this strawman fails but please keep trying to sell it LMAO

gotta say this sums this BS fake support up pretty good

How the Mormons Punked the Press | Brooke P. Hunter

The new Mormon position is like that candy with a razor blade inside that your mom warned you about on Halloween. While calling for LGBTQ people to be protected from those who hate them for non-religious reasons (and who are those people, anyway?), they have hidden their real agenda, which is to legalize such discrimination by anyone who claims their prejudice is backed by faith.

yep the whole thing is OTHERS shouldnt be allowed to illegal discriminate against gays but WE should be able to, lmao nobody falls for it

Separation of Church and State
Just as they have their constitutional right to religious belief, you have your constitutional right to disagree. Freedom of for or from religion.
Do you want that to change?
How can they lose their tax exemption?

I was kinda confused by the statement too. At first it seemed like they'd moved forward, but then they added a fairly significant caveat. Almost came across as an offensive strategy rather than a defensive one.

they cant unless they break the law and currently they arent as far as anybody knows

they will always be free to teach, preach say what they like with the normal very minimal restrictions that are put on EVERYBODY

yeah it makes no sense

its like a 8th grade bully telling the 6th grader, hey i believe in your rights and NOBODY is going to pick on you anymore because thats wrong . . . . .unless it me, then its ok.
