Michelle Obama forgoes a headscarf and sparks a backlash in Saudi Arabia

I was wondering how you'd take someone acting outside of how you predicted and it's to disregard it completely

Huh? I disregarded your obvious lack of humor and general denial that conservatives can act in predictable ways except when it comes to Muslims. It's almost like you didn't actually get the post.

When in Saudi Arabia do as the Saudis do. They should do as we do when they come here as well.

All snark aside and out of genuine curiosity, what's your opinion on this?

When in Saudi Arabia do as the Saudis do. They should do as we do when they come here as well.

So they should take off their head coverings because we don't do that here?

This will blow over, but if you are going to someone's funeral to pay respects, shouldn't you respect them?

Yes, it will blow over. Paying respect is great, but not if it involves kissing asses. I'm not a fan of MO, but in this case I certainly am. Good for her.

Oh, I think she screwed up. She wore Pottery Barn curtains to meeting the damn King of Saudi Arabia. Can you imagine? The horror.

I admit. I know very little about Pottery Barn.

Yes they should.

Well I don't think so. As long as they're decently clothed they can wear whatever they want and we'll do the same.

They're like the Dallas Cowboys. They're worth going to see every once in a while, but not something you want to depend on during special occasions.

What you say is true. What I say shows respect for the culture in which one is a guest.

It causes me no problems. For the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of our First Lady. If Saudi Arabia takes offense to something stupid like that, that's their problem.

Is that unequivocal enough for you?

:D I lol'd. :D

Some women are not to be messed with.. What I like about this is how black African heritage peoples are seen in Arab countries and this one threw local custom back in their face.

reminded me of this story -

Too bad Michelle O wasn't given the opportunity to drive the motorcade but I'm certainly glad she didn't stand the prerequisite 10 feet behind her man

Meh. I don't like Michelle but this is a non-story. We should all be able to wear what we want without fear of backlash. Saudi Arabia is a human rights nightmare. The people in that sad nation must obey a fictional story book and live their lives based on it. If not, it's lashes and death.

No one was talking about you X Factor, not everything is about you when the word "conservatives" is used.

I don't think I've seen (thus far) any of our conservatives come on and repeat what you suggested their response would be.

Oh, I know. I'm just reveling in the fact that few Conservatives are here complaining about the Obamas insulting our allies. It's not like... they do that or anything.

She's done some pretty good work on childhood obesity.

 Obama has insulted and pissed off many of our allies. Other than Cuba (and - possibly - Burma) I can't think offhand of a nation with whom we are better situated as a result of his administration.

That doesn't mean that Michelle should sign up for reinforcing the subjugation of women.

I just don't care.

Yep, this is just one more. I wonder how many conservatives will complain about it like they have in the past? :)

As the wife of a head of state Mrs. Obama has no real choice in the matter - she has to attend. As previously stated traditional garb for women is used as a means of subjugation. Good for her.

And while I generally agree that guests should not offend their host a host has an obligation to be hospitable and respect their guest's traditions. I wouldn't think of inviting a vegetarian to my home and demand that they eat meat because meat eating is part of my tradition. I'd serve them a vegetarian dish.

She could have used the classic excuse for women, a head ache.

So far, zero.

So far, zero.

Makes one wonder whether insulting our allies is only a problem when the right people are being insulted. ;)

Wow something we agree on.

This story is useless. I'd want my girlfriend to do the same thing. She shouldn't have to cover her head when she goes somewhere. She's got a pretty face.

well, no. Actions that insult or damage relations with our allies can have positive purpose. In this case, refusing to reinforce the subjugation of women in a non-aggressive manner. In the case of sending back the Winston Churchill bust, or selling the Poles out to the Russians without the courtesy of a phone call, not so much.

Hmmm, so what you're saying is that Michelle Obama going against the social norms established by the Saudi royal family... will be a positive for our relationship with the Saudi royal family? Right?
