Saudi King Abdullah dies aged 91

Arab dictators rarely do. Still better than ISIS though.

And if a civil war breaks out and chaos ensues, you think ISIL will say "Oh no, we cannot cross a line on a map?"

and you are looking in the wrong direction. ISIL is recruiting to build a foothold in Afghanistan and is possibly already in Pakistan forming local militias as well. NOt everything is about effing Israel and their "we will nuke em" BS.

ISIS has clearly stated what they will do to Israel. I believe they will try. And yes, Im well aware that ISIL is in Africa, and other parts of asia as well.

Apparently to be succeeded by Aziz.
Oil price and other issues.

Just to clarify he's being succeeded by Salman. Aziz is the familial surname that Abdullah and all of his brothers carry as sons of Abdulaziz more commonly known as Ibn Saud.

And now comes the civil war....

I heard several weeks ago somewhere there were already people jockeying for control.

Highly unlikely. The fact that Prince Salman, sorry... King Salman openly declared that Prince Muqrin will become Crown Prince and his heir is a sign that there has already been at least a medium term agreement on succession and control of the throne. For those who are unaware Salman is from the Sudairi faction of the family and Muqrin is (was) a member of the Abdullah faction of the family.

Already 'Clarified'.

As well as slightly changing the headline (now just, "Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies")...
the BBC has added in their 18:48 update that indeed Salman IS king.
and also named Next in line.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies

Abdullah bin Abdulaziz was the fifth of his brothers to take the throne and became king in 2005, reports Caroline Hawley

The announcement, made early on Friday, said his brother, Salman, had become king....

The late king's half brother Moqren has been named the new crown prince, the official statement said.

King Salman called on the royal family's Allegiance Council to recognise Moqren as his crown prince and heir.

"His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1am this morning," the statement said.

What others should also be aware of is that Salman is regarded by many as incapacitated by dementia. It is highly unlikely that he will be the one making the day to day decisions about the Kingdom.

Doesn't matter who has been tapped. The Sudairi Seven hold a lot of positions of power and they may not go quietly into that good night.

Of the Sudairi Seven only four are actually alive including the current King, the same King who just demanded that everyone accept Prince Muqrin as Crown Prince. Clearly there has been some sort of agreement for the medium term succession of the Kingdom.

There are the sons though. Do not be surprised if you see one or more of them make their move

Which sons are you referring to? The most powerful of the sons, Mohammed bin Nayef, does not seem likely to challenge the authority of his Uncle. The most likely dispute we will see will be over who, if anyone, is named deputy crown prince or deputy second prime minister.

How much terrorism originates with Saudi Arabia?

If ISIL can drop SA, it is over for the west. The caliphate would be a done deal.

That's a big IF.

Mornin' Sherman. :2wave: He wont be challenging his uncle. Not now nor ever.

Saudi King Salman resolves succession by appointing nephew.....

Saudi Arabia's new King Salman on Friday moved to resolve the kingdom's long term succession by appointing his nephew Mohammed bin Nayef as deputy crown prince, meaning he will be the first of that generation to rule the kingdom one day. Prince Mohammed, who remains as Interior Minister, according to the royal decree carried on state television, is next in line to rule after Salman and Crown Prince Muqrin.

A close friend of the United States, Prince Mohammed has won plaudits from Western countries for his crushing of an al Qaeda insurgency from 2003-06 when he was head of the kingdom's security forces and his father was Interior Minister......snip~

He is only 56 yrs old, so he will be around for some time barring no health issues or troubles.

Salman isn't going anywhere. I'd bet my retirement savings on it.

We do that. Vegas surely will find someone to make that bet on the other side.

Irrespective of what some may think, King Abdullah specifically and the Saudi royal family in general, have been good and loyal friends of the west and have been a stabilizing influence both in the region and economically on the world oil markets. Without them, the Venezuelans under Chavez and others would have worked to destroy western economies through OPEC policy long ago.

Let's also keep in mind that the world, led by the United States, NATO allies, and the United Nations acted quickly to reclaim and protect little Kuwait when Hussein decided on a little expansionary adventure. If anyone, ISIS included, decided now was the time to move on Saudi territory to destabilize the region, there's no doubt in my mind that western military forces would be there to destroy any such move.

Sometimes, in the world we live in, we have to accept friendship and cooperation from those we may feel have principles that are compromised in our view and in comparison to ours. The Saudis are one such friend and the west will be wise to protect that friendship should it come under attack.

Good morning, CJ. :2wave:

:agree: You stated my thoughts far better than I could have. *hug* The Saudi King who led the House of Saud took a chance on America years ago, even though their religious beliefs differ from ours, and not only did their oil make some people on both sides very wealthy, they became an ally, which took trust on their part. It was because of our agreement with them that the dollar became the currency that everyone in the world had to use to buy their oil, giving us our "favored nation" status worldwide, and our country has benefitted greatly from that in so many economic ways. Sadly, that seems to be deteriorating because they now believe we have thrown them under the bus, and it will affect us. Thankfully we have oil here to get us through the global upheaval that is taking place, but what a mess this poor world is in! Trust seems to have left the building....

Good morning Lady P - you're quite right and well said.

Still enjoying a rather uneventful winter here - a little milder today as well but no snow in sight. Hope yours is going well too if you decided to stay home and not visit Texas.

On New Year's Eve, Big sister went to the window and told the fireworks "Shhh - baby sleeping!" :2mad:

Perhaps true though the Sauds were worried about external forces even before this death-they are building a wall and there's a significant military presence on the borders. Internally there are ISIS sympathisers, and succession is a time of susceptibility.

And while announcing the Crown Prince, next in line, they announced the Deputy Crown Prince who is second in line. From what I recall, was not done previously and this is the move to a younger generation???

A religious dictator who has the blood of innocent children on his hands has died. Sadly due to his title many governments will send to representatives but this man is not that deserving of receiving such high honor.

Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest supporters of extremists Muslim mosques and terrorists. Hopefully this will lead to more freedom and less oppression but I doubt that this is going to happen at this moment in time.
