Saudi King Abdullah dies aged 91

For obvious reasons I am not at all sad in the slightest.

Good bye cheap oil prices....

I doubt it, there is too much they can do to shale oil producers by keeping their production levels high. It keeps their market share secure for at least the next 4-5 years by forcing oil to stay below the break even rates for other types of oil.

We know you would not be.

Why would anyone be? A ruler who had absolute power, ruled through theocratic rule, ruled under extreme Wahhabi Islamic Law, human rights abuser, allowed virtually no freedom in his country, possible links to ISIS and other forms of terrorism. Why would anyone morn this? I mean **** his country and regime is comparable to the hermit Kingdom DPRK when it comes to human rights and justice...

And now comes the civil war....

I heard several weeks ago somewhere there were already people jockeying for control.

Nope. The Crown Prince has long been selected, approved by the former King and the Royal Family. It's the next Crown Prince that might see some jockeying.

As well as slightly changing the headline (now just, "Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies")...
the BBC has added in their 18:48 update that indeed Salman IS king.
and also named Next in line.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies

Abdullah bin Abdulaziz was the fifth of his brothers to take the throne and became king in 2005, reports Caroline Hawley

The announcement, made early on Friday, said his brother, Salman, had become king....

The late king's half brother Moqren has been named the new crown prince, the official statement said.

Never mind, I sit corrected.

King Salman called on the royal family's Allegiance Council to recognise Moqren as his crown prince and heir.

Ah. No I don't. That is the council that (according to the current set up) is supposed to actually name the Crown Prince. It has representation from all of Ibn Saud's sons who also had sons (effectively, the senior leadership of the ruling family), so it's supposed to be able to give a "corporate" decision that minimizes the possibility of infighting and splitting up.

Agreed - if there were sleepers or saboteurs they'll be activated quickly. Unless ISIS is racing to the border with everything they have right now, the Saudi's should be okay, unless of course it's something more substantial from say, Iran or even perhaps Yemen on their southern border.

I think they'll be fine anyway. They've always handed the throne between brothers. Every king since the first one (Abdulazziz) have been brothers. Sure didn't cause any instability in the past, and it won't now.

When they run out of sons of Abdulaziz, there might be something to worry about.

Well that's the point of a two-step succession process. The Crown Prince has probably been effectively running much of Saudi national policy for some time now if the kings' health had been that seriously deteriorating, so any changeover friction is minimized.

Sounds much like the socialist/marxists of the last century.

What I described was King Abdullah. But hey I get it, Im a socialist so therefore any response you bring up your brain dead arguments.

Good riddance to the useless putz.

I detest all monarchies...but the Saudi one ranks right up there with the worst, imo.

Do I think much will change? No.

we're not too far apart... .pretty close ,actually.

I'm no fan of absolute monarchies whatsoever... no matter if their rule based on their religion, their ideology, or even their whim....no matter if they are benevolent or malevolent

I believe such monarchs/dictators should be exterminated with extreme prejudice and relegated to history books.

unfortunately, we'll have to suffice with them dying off naturally...and watching all sorts of folks kissing the asses of the living ones.

16 out of 20 of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi nationals.

A Second Look at the Saudis

I was thinking some of the folks connected to the bombing of the USS Cole had Saudi ties as well. It just seems like whenever we know the details, there are Saudis involved.

Doesn't matter who has been tapped. The Sudairi Seven hold a lot of positions of power and they may not go quietly into that good night.

Im just pointing out the striking parallels between various totalitarian regimes.

That totalitarian regimes kill people and commit abuses? Strikingly you leave out the right wing... But hey, I get it hackery is hackery. Im a socialist, therefore to you everything done in the name of socialism is totalitarianism must be brought up at any post ever (even when I have criticized these regimes etc etc), even when its completely off topic.

and you are looking in the wrong direction. ISIL is recruiting to build a foothold in Afghanistan and is possibly already in Pakistan forming local militias as well. NOt everything is about effing Israel and their "we will nuke em" BS.
