Ottawa invokes rarely used law in Buy America row with U.S. - The Globe and Mail

Ottawa has invoked a rarely used anti-sanctions law after Alaska refused to void Buy America purchasing rules in the rebuilding of a B.C. ferry terminal.

The Canadian government signed an order Monday under the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act, barring companies from complying with the requirement that only U.S. steel be used on the project in Prince Rupert, B.C., Trade Minister Ed Fast said.

I believe this is in response to a break in a mutual trade agreement signed some time ago.

In any event, it does not look good on the Conservatives who have been playing nice with Wasington.

Well we sorta have to.

Wasn't there a similar dispute years ago regarding softwood lumber?

Well we sorta have to.

No we don't.

Preston manning proved that again and again.

Mike Pearson and Pierre Trudeau defied Washington on Vietman, draft dodgers, Cuba and a wide range of issues, Trudeau held Nixon in contempt and was esteemed around the world.

At the direction of Preston Manning, the rat smart Jean Chretien reinforced the banking system, thus avoiding 2008. And the Clown Prince of Quebec withstood intense pressure from Bush to stay out of the Iraq insanity....or did you think the prolonged softwood lumber dispute was really about American jobs?

No, it was the Lumber Assoc with Politicians in their pocket.
In a trade war we lose more than the US. Just my opinion.

Oh man.....

that was the headline...yep.

And that what was what started it.

But, you failed to notice I said "prolonged"....George W. Bush delayed the process to try to force the then Liberal government into submission.

The Conservatives have been playing nice with Washington??

Relations between the Harper Conservatives and the Obama administration are about as frosty as relations back when Nixon was bugging Democrats and Pierre Trudeau was sliding down bannisters and pirouetting behind the Queen.

It is. Bought here in 96 when I was posted here
Unfortunately we had 2 RCMP Officers shot- 1 minor injuries released from hospitial, the other, head shot, no hope really- they are waiting for family to arrive. He is 42, 3 kids. Sad.
Shawn Rehn, alleged shooter of St. Albert Mounties, had history of crime, drug use - Edmonton - CBC News

Damn, prayer all around. Been a Leafs fan my whole life but I have to admit that when I lived in Alberta, I pulled for the Oilers every now and again. :)

I left St. Albert back in 93 so I wasn't there when you got there. Dated a girl that caused me to move from Sudbury, ON. Yeah she was THAT hot. :)

Enlighten me.

Harper's got us in Iraq. Why? It ain't playing here.

He has just run advance on a new trade agreement with EEC, said to be a blue print for a latter, pact with the US.

And I doubt anyone will have as frosty relations with the US as did Pierre. I covered Ottawa in those days, none of us was the least surprised when the Watergate tapes revealed Nixon calling him "that Asshole".

We could never document it, but a few of us clearly heard Trudeau refer to Nixon as a "thug" early on, but we had no corroboration, just like "fuddle duddle".

Keystone XL is a major irritant, Harper has no trouble calling terrorists terrorists or calling islamofacists terrorists too, Harper calls out Putin on a regular basis while Obama keeps kissing his ass and slow walking it, Harper is moving on trade with Europe and Asia because of the Obama obstruction, and Harper is a serious conservative, not quite what Obama looks on as friendly - and in six plus years, how many Obama/Harper confabs/meetings have there been?

Not as bad as Nixon/Trudeau, but as I said, the worst since then.
