After 19 days, Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson finish climb up sheer face of El Capitan’s Dawn Wall | National Post

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — On the 19th day, Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, both now bearded, reached the summit of El Capitan’s Dawn Wall on Wednesday, completing a quest that included years of planning and that many considered the most challenging rock climb in the world.

Dozens of family members and friends greeted the climbers when they reached the top at 3:25 p.m. on a cloudless day. After Mr. Caldwell hugged his wife and Mr. Jorgeson hugged his girlfriend, they were given sparkling wine. Mr. Jorgeson sprayed his. “That’s the first shower you’ve had in a while,” Mr. Caldwell’s wife, Rebecca, said.

I understand this free climb means not using ropes to propel you and the use of safety ropes to catch you if you fall. On the clips I have seen on TV they were shown constantly falling off and the safety rope catching them. The feat of climbing up the wall of El Capitan is awesome but I thought free climb would mean no use of any ropes. Which is what I think of when I see Alain Robert scale a skyscraper.
