SLCPD shooting: Neighbors stunned to learn victim was their 'peaceful' neighbor (with video) | The Salt Lake Tribune

Those were the words James Dudley Barker’s longtime friend used to describe allegations that Barker used a shovel to attack a Salt Lake City police officer with bone-breaking force before the officer shot Barker to death in a yard just one block from Barker’s home.
"James was an incredibly peaceful person," said Summer Osburn, who became friends with Barker 20 years ago while they were students at Brigham Young University.

With all the fuss about police wearing body cams I thought I'd share this to show an instance where it tells a pretty clear story of what preceded the shooting. It appears as though the shovel strikes disabled the camera so once the attack begins the video goes dead. However it pretty clearly shows what the officer was dealing with and leaves little question he had to defend himself.

I think body cams really may be a good idea. This officer is now pretty clearly exonerated because it's extremely obvious from the video that the guy attacked him. If we had video of the thugs from Ferguson we might've been able to avoid needless riots.

If you read the comments both in the article and the 'comments' section, you see a disgusting and common trend. Poor baby...would never hurt a fly, not a mean bone in his body, a bright shining star for peace. Oh...and the eeeeevil cops, always shooting first and asking questions later. There are even a few comments about how REALLY it was the person that called 911 that had him killed. Had this been someone else in a major city around the country, we would have a riot about to explode.

Then...the actual evidence comes to light.

Its becoming all too familiar.

I think this is very true. There are many people that have a "public" persona for friends and neighbours and then a "hidden" persona that occasionally comes out. Depending on the mental stability of that person, the hidden persona can get violent and dangerous. I have no doubt that Michael Brown was a big old huggy bear around his momma who was fooled big time and he was likely respectful and decent around his stepdad who looks like he can turn violent on a dime himself. But out on the road, the bully and the beast comes out easily.

Camera's are a good thing. I've seen things turn from good to bad even faster than this...this is what emergency respondenrs deal with every day...seems to never make MSNBC.

Welcome to earth.

This guy had it coming, for sure.

Guy was White, that's why no "peaceful protests".

If had been a black dude, the Libbos would be like, " that was excessive force! He was only hitting him with a snow shovel!".

I missed the video where Eric Garner attacked an officer with "bone breaking force". Oh hey it looks like two conservatives brought race into this issue yet again. And yet they always talk about liberals bringing up race.

Reality sucks for you folks, don't it?
