Breaking News fresh off the presses! Not really sure how all this will work. I guess when it fails in the Congress he'll blame the Republicans...

Obama: President Proposes 2 Free Years of Community College

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how this can actually work?

Because I'm not liking this idea:
White House Domestic Policy Director Cecilia Munoz said the proposal is a federal-state partnership, with federal funding covering 75 percent of the tuitions and participating states will be expected to pick up the rest of the tab. Munoz said legislation would be needed to approve the plan and repeatedly declined to say how much it would cost, saying more details about the funding source would come in the president’s budget for the next fiscal year due next month.

Nothing is free and someone is going to pay for it.

As most Progresssive Policies wind up nailing the Middle class consumers I'm guessing it will be them.

Anyway, whats the point of 2 years of free College ? In the Obama economy it just means you're still unemployed in 2 years.

Yes. Reduce the federal income tax, and divert that money to the states, which are the primary funding source of community colleges.

The President's statement here seems contradictory: “'Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everyone who’s willing to work for it,' Obama said in a video filmed Wednesday aboard Air Force One and posted to Facebook."

How about we reduce graduate loan interest rates and make efforts to cap tuition. I think people should have to invest in their education, if you hand it away for "free" it's undervalued. What they should do is ensure it's affordable for people and loans/tuition are low. Our education problem is that tuition has shot up far beyond the rate of inflation (and even economic growth) with student loan interest rates going up along with the answer to education being "throw more money into loans" with universities reacting as "there is more money available to us to charge in tuition."

If this had been part of QE, I would have agreed wholeheartedly.

However it was Obama himself, excusing the non recovery who said the main problem was automated tellers, that there was no unskilled jobs.

wo he knew the need then. If he had done it then the graduates would be paying taxes today.

The man is a very polished speaker, but his elevator doesn't go all the way to the top if you get my meaning.

I think that because of his own employment background and financial understanding, Obama doesn't fully understand that money doesn't come from the magic-money machine. ;)

Sounds to me like Obama is willing to do a little horse trading.

He sees the reality of the GOP controlling both houses and he knows that if he takes out his veto pen every time they send him a bill that the Democrats will feel the wrath at the polls in 2016. This smells like he's floating a deal...

If we can figure out a way to pay for it without hitting the middle class I'm all for it. However, I think it should also include trade schools as college ain't for everyone.

Greetings, Fenton. :2wave:

If he's thinking along those lines, how about doing the same thing for trade schools, where young people learn how to be plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc? We need those people, too, and everyone is not interested in going to college. I don't understand what he meant by "work for it," though. Did he mean apply themselves, or something else?

$34B is doable. It is limited to kids with good grades.

What in the world ever gave you the idea that Obama knows how to float anything? He has no clue how to do anything let alone make deals. He his as narcissistic as it comes and in no way does he know how to work with anyone. And that is is proven record. A narcissist does not change his strips.

agreed

Do democrats have any ideas that don't include using other peoples money or labor? I'm all ears for any ideas that don't amount to theft and servitude.

I'm guessing he meant to apply themselves?

The more modern term for "trade school" is "technical college," and a rose by any other name....

The Associate of Applied Science is what is offered (and there are shorter certification programs too), and I don't care what any hifalutin' college grad says: The person who pulls into my driveway in August who can fix my a/c system is a god.

Good points...

Wouldn't it be smarter to spend the money on enhancements to the scholarship system?

Seeing as both he and his wife had student loans of their own, I'd say your assessment is inaccurate.

Our community college offers classes in those things, auto repair, networking, has distance learning with 4 years schools for things like engineering, and HS students can take classes virtually for free anyway already so that they can put down a lot of college credits for pennies on the dollar and knock a year or 2 off their final college costs by shortening the time spent at university.

No.

I live among similar species, we call them "socialists" and no, they have not changed solutions offered in the 65 years I've been around.

Actually, it's not free education that undervalues degrees, but the sheer number of people who hold those degrees. But yes, something needs to be done to curb costs. Even people in my generation who have it significantly better than the current generation of college graduates are still paying off their school loans. When I hear of what current students owe I just see a lifetime of bonded labor.

That's harsh.

He is good at a few things, lying is about the top though

It would be political suicide for the GOP oppose this idea. The can fight over how it is funded, but if they kill it, President Hillary Clinton and her majority in the House will make it happen. This thing should sail through with bipartisan support. The GOP won't want this as a wedge issue in 2016. It will kill them.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) tried doing just that, the Republicans blocked it:

GOP blocks Warren

 Hopefully this is a joke post. To claim this as a make/break wedge issue is, to put it kindly, extremely naive.

You really don't believe that he's just going to sign a clean bill for something like the Keystone pipeline without getting something he wants, do you?
